An online friend I used to often talk to on Animax Community introduced me to manga and told me to try out Shugo Chara, I started with it and it seemed fun. I actually never completed that manga but later started exploring other random titles and trying them out.

When I was in primary school, they had Fruits Basket in the libary and I read it because what 8 year old doesn't find a backwards book interesting.
That was over 12 years ago, but I didn't pick up manga again till about 4 years ago when I read Death Note after seeing the anime.

Older brothers were reading manga and watching anime.

I watched One Piece until I reached the last aired episode, and read the manga to continue the story.

I honestly don't really remember... When I found out that my favorite anime, Noragami, has a manga, I started reading it. Then I got into reading more manga.
Help the industry and buy Blu-rays and DVD's.
Noragami is the best anime ever.

The first manga i read was Dragonball, when i was 9 years old (2001). A friend of mine had the entire series and i wanted to get some knowledge about the series because he was playing a lot of Budokai on the PS2 at the time. So he lend me his books and i was immediately hooked and binged the entire series in less than a school week. XD

After that he also lend me the entire Ranma 1/2 series and sure enough i binged that as well. After that i started buying my own manga. The next manga i started were Inuyasha and School Rumble (both still ongoing back then), both of which i've read multiple times. After that it just got more and more. ^^

Watched Naruto as a kid, but my country had to wait until an arc is finished before they continued showing it here, so for weeks they just showed arc with Zabuza (that's his name if I remember xD) over and over again, then someone told me about manga, and how it is showing events that did not yet happen on TV... Then I went on from Naruto to Gantz lol.

I started reading about 4 years ago. I watched the first couple episodes of Another, and while I found it interesting I just wasn't enjoying it all that much. I saw someone mention online that they thought the manga was way better, and I thought, "maybe I should give manga a try." I bought the Another omnibus from Amazon and my life was changed forever. Now I'm sitting at 350+ volumes and counting.

I only casually read here and there as of like maybe a 1yr 1/2 ago.

I never knew about manga but as I got more into anime I learned about manga being the original source in some cases.

First I read I believe was Rosario + Vampire. I was curious how the story went in the manga since I learned the anime didn't really stick to the roots.

I find it interesting to see how the manga goes vs the anime or just getting to see how the full story goes in the event the anime doesn't fully adapt the manga. So, I namely read manga of anime I've seen rather than original manga.

I found out that anime was based on manga so I went to the first manga site when you google manga which was Manga fox then.

I tell you, out of all unfamiliar and never-heard-of genres out there, my 5th grade self clicked on 'ecchi' because it sounded like little kid adventures to me that time.

And I found out it wasn't meant for kids when I finished 5 chapters of Happy Negative Marriage.

I saw the Berserk 1997 anime and I had to get a continuation somehow before I went crazy. I looked it up and saw it had a still ongoing manga.
To this day it's still by far the best manga I've ever read, and the best fantasy saga in general.

Hell if I remember beyond going to the library and browsing. I wasnt into anime or manga at all at that point.

I didn't realize they had sectored off more "mature" stuff like Ghost in the Shell in a different part of the library so I picked Chibi Vampire/Karin of all things from the shelf I found.

I dont remember what else they had at the time stocked besides your basic Dragonball, Naruto, Tokyo Ghoul(?), etc, nor do I remember why I picked what I did.

i got into manga because of bad internet speed....................

here's how.
i was a big fan of detective conan as a kid so when i got reintroduced to it as a teen i was watching all its episodes online either by downloading or viewing online........
i was so into in that i hardly watched anything else.
one summer my net service got jammed and i wasnt able to watch any more episodes..............to fill my detective conan needs i tired a lot then oneday i found that there was a thing called manga from which the anime is adapted from so i thought if manga is the original it might even be better thinking that i first ventured into manga
and never looked back

I had always watched anime, but there was a take out chinese food restaurant in town in the mall for a while, and went to the book store for a magazine, and saw shonen jump, and then became a tradition untill they did a massive time skip in one piece and ended up reading the rest online.

I don't remember how i learned about manga for the first time. Probably at the time that i learned that some of the cartoons that i watched as a kid were from Japan and they were called anime which was probably at 2002. I remember getting my first manga though, Ghost in The Shell anime was very popular at that time and a friend of mine got the manga of it, i was like dude, GITS has a manga ?! i want one too ! so i got one in our next comics order with my friends. Back then if your order passed 100 dolars, you would get free shipping so me and my friends joined together now and then to make an order that pass 100 dolars. :D Those were fun days. :D

I don't even remember my absolute first encounter with manga. I'm pretty sure I was a little too overwhelmed with the fact that animes were originally mangas at first and once I walked into a Borders (rip) and saw familiar anime titles and was like "woah this is what they are originally". Grateful I found out about this once manga online was hitting it's stride.

I would see manga in stores where they would be near anime. Eventually I started off by reading manga of video games I liked (Zelda), and then I read a few short ones. But honestly, I don't like manga as much as anime.

My dad likes comic books, though he rarely reads them now. One day he came home with various comic books, and one of them was a collection of manga combined into one book. I picked it up because it looked interesting and he told me how to read it, from right to left. I remember the specific one I started reading was Naruto.

After that, I read Naruto almost exclusively, until I got into Death Note, which then led to FMA and Bleach.

Uh, let's see. I was in elementary school. My friend and I always watched anime together and looked into anime stuff. We went to a bookstore nearby us at a mall and we had free reign since my friend's parent just kinda dropped us off and told us to call when we were ready. I was like ten or eleven and my friend was like nine, ha hah! So we were hanging out there and we noticed some books that looked a lot like the shows we watched. "Wow, they're comics!" So we read a bunch. Every time we went to the mall, we'd read manga there and buy some if we had money. It was really nice. ;u; I think one of the first things I actually bought was Love Hina or a Di Gi Charat anthology.
I was already into newspaper comics and other kinda more weekly update type of comics at the time, so I was delighted to have an even longer comic. XD

Back in the days, when Hellsing aired on TV, I was intrigued by the MC. Then I found out about Hellsing Ultimate, which wasn't published after the fourth OVA in my country, but I really needed to know how the story would continue. Had some trouble to get my hands on a few manga volumes, since they are not allowed to be sold in public and not for people under age 18. Ironically, when I finally had all 10 volumes bought, I intended to just read up the the 8th one. Never gave up the hope to see the anime prior reading the source material. Happily, a few years later they were finally published. Haven't finished the manga though, lol.
After Hellsing a huge gap in my manga consume appeared. Then, last year, a friend of mine introduced me to some BL stuff and well... I started to read again. No genre-restrictions though.

The first manga I remember reading was a Doraemon paperback my mother bought me in a newsstand around 1995. Though I watched anime in the Catalan TV, all I read back then were local comics like Mort & Phil, Superlópez, Zipi & Zape, Pafman, 13 Rue del Percebe, Anacleto... and some Tintin and Asterix.

I don't remember reading any other manga until 2002 when I remembered about the Dr. Slump anime, looking for information I read that there was a comic version and it had been edited around 1997 in paperback, and I decided to buy it. After I completed it I started buying other mangas like Love Hina, Dragon Ball, Ranma 1/2, Saikano, X..., which were already being published in tankobon. For years I only read manga until I got interested in comics from other countries too.

It's a weird story tbh. I watched my first anime (DN) in 2012 and got a little obsessed, I talked my friend into watching some series too and she got even more obsessed so that she soon started discovering on her own. Finally she came across Kuroshitsuji and she shipped SebastianxCiel so eventually she started to search for some real yaoi and became a big fan of Koisuru Boukun. She kept talking about it so I watched it too because why not, and it was not that bad so when I heard the manga is getting licensed in my country (in June 2013) I bought it immidiatelly. So yeah, my first manga was a gay porn manga. I've bought all 10 volumes that were released so far but never made it past the 5th one. I'm still hiding this series under my bed.

uhm, pretty sure anyone interested in anime hears about manga..
but i'm sure you mean "how did you first get into reading manga"..
anyway, i loved the Evangelion anime, rewatched it countless times, so i decided to read the manga, and happen to find someone selling a couple of volumes of it online, so i bought them and became entranced with how much like watching an anime it was.. it all happens in your head, but the characters move, talk, react, and perform.. it was a very interesting experience to a series i've already watched, and it was different from the anime story-wise, so i started reading other series i'ved already watched, and then to well-known manga, and then to manga that just sounded interesting to me, and so forth until i realized manga is better than anime
