Art style meaning the way the characters are drawn --

The amount of times i get recommended to watch Clannad + Clannad AS, I really CAN'T do it. It sounds so amazing and I did try to put myself through it once but I couldn't get pass 3 minutes without cringing and dying at the characters' appearance. I can't take the exaggerated features and the hair and the "kawaii-ness", especially when they are meant to be 16 or whatever but look 10 years old. I'd rather have them look 30 instead. How do people watch anime like this?!

While I watch anime with very different art styles (two such anime - ping pong and kuchuu buranko are in my favorites) I hate it when the body proportions of anime characters are strangely animated.
I dropped code geass for this reason. The characters are too thin and their arms/legs are too long.

Same I think I just took every opportunity to watch as much as I could.

Anime is good, fucking deal with it.

I often don't tend to give much importance to the art style of an anime if it manages to call my attention. I watched Chaos Dragon despite how bad the designs were... and although it was shit (in designs ans plot), at least I managed to finish it.

You get used to it to a certain extent after a while

And most 'horrible' art styles aren't as bad as they are made out to be

I don't have anything against any art style.
Talking about Clannad, I loved that animation type for the same reasons you hate it, because they look gorgeous and young, it's a lot better than making them older because in that anime that's how they were meant to look like.

Just have to hope that everything else makes up for it. The Clannad faces were pretty awful. It was like they had the middle part of their faces cut out; they were far too short.
It's an entirely different kind of flying, altogether!

My standard for art style is actually pretty low and can (because of this) watch nearly every show.

I'm with you on this.
And honestly, if you're gonna just depend on art style, you're just going to spoil some of the amazing anime series out there for yourself, or miss them completely.
But I guess to some people eye-candy is just too important.

Art style can't kill a good story... I'm currently watching Higurashi, which has some awful character designs and odd body shapes, but it's the story that keeps me engaged.
As for Clannad, I thought that the art style worked well - it had the scent of youth and innocence. But, again, I admire it because of the plot. That's why Clannad After Story has been in the top 10 of MAL for 6 years.

You aren't the only one with Clannad with being a cr*p anime but thats just my opinion. There are more awful animations out there such as The flower is evil which I couldn't bear

Importance of art. I think I stopped caring when as I was growing up, Mainly cause everything animated is drawn weirdly anyways.
Doraemon compared to Dexter labotory (Basically animation and art styles vary everywhere, no point missing out just cause you don't like the art.)

Whenever I watch a new show, the art is usually different to the previous show.
Though I have noticed similarities or identical character designs, but in the end I get used to the art style quite quickly.

And in some cases I find the style suits the anime its in, due to the anime itself.

Aku no Hana animation almost made me poke my eyeballs out but after a while, I got used to it so no. That's the only anime I was skeptical about the animation and probably the last.

Everyone has their limits, and while you can almost acclimatise yourself to certain art styles, there's always going to be a point where it's immersion-breaking. I couldn't get into Clannad at all for that very reason.
Now you're wondering if there's white text in any of my other posts.

Over there, I'm everywhere. I know that.

im also a person who can't stand bad animation/art, especially those minimalist art styles are horrible and just a lame excuse for saving money, but clannad has good art compared to others. watch tatami galaxy or gankutsuou....wow, ugliness on a whole new level.

I don't think there are many art styles I would specifically refuse to watch, I care more about the consistency (no sudden QUALITY scenes). Out of all entertainment media only animation and comics can be this playful with body proportions and make them part of the visual outlook, so I just try to see why the creators were going for a certain look and try to enjoy it.

What's with people being so triggered by skinny Code Geass characters? Do you fear that the show will make you look fat in comparison? Not enough Health At Every Size™?

if you dont watch clannad, you will live an unhappy life.

I actualy don't give 2 shits anymore about the art style. I used to, but then i realized that, not watching good anime because i didn't initially like the art is immature. On a side note, i didn't like the clannad artstyle at first, but by the time i had finished the series, it had become my favorite. If everything looked like clannad, the world would be a better place.

Yeah, I totally agree. I really want to get into Clannad, but the eyes ARE SO BIG
Why are they so big? Like, I can manage so many series, and I know in general anime eyes are big (especially in ecchi stuff), but wtf is wrong with Clannad's eyes? Probably to express the amount of feels that are supposed to flow from our own eyes...

But objectively speaking, it's true that, at the end of the day, it's all art and it's upto each individual viewer to have their own standards on how to view it.
TL;DR It depends on the person.

I used to avoid anime which have horrible art styles, for instance Clannad. I didn't want to watch it because of their extremely huge eyes... but I watched it anyway and like it was pretty good! Then I think I got used to the art style and didn't try to avoid any anime with "horrible" art styles anymore...

You get used to it, when you're around three episodes in at the latest. After that it doesn't bother you anymore and a good story is way more important anyway.

If the anime has a translated manga/novel version, I don't. This is why I don't watch Fate/kaleid and KonoSuba, but still follow the manga.

Art (picture), animation, and story are what make the anime, unlike manga (no animation) and novel (no animation and limited picture), so TS's decision is understandable.

Have the same problem. Still. I don't think I will watch it anytime soon. The eyes are creepy.

What's creepier it's that one of the characters use glasses... and THEIR GLASSES ARE LIKE 1/4 THE SIZE OF THEIR EYES LIKE WHAT ARE THE GLASSES FOR
