LOL, I think Eiichirou should take his learning a little slower unless he wants to overwhelm himself. I find the episode to have a decent balance of comedy. I felt trolled by a few of the scenes though like when he gets nailed by the ball. Heh.

I give some credit to the kid trying though.

I also feel

Not sure if they will adapt it but a 2 cour should be enough for character development at least.

Kinda expected Eiichiro to lose against Takuma, but he definitely adapts fast.
I hope he wins his first match with the help of his arsenal of notebooks.

I second that.

Besides that, I'm also curious as to why, near the end of the episode, the guy in the school scowled at Eiichiro. Is his love interest that girl who likes him? I should think not.

He looked like he's envious of Eiichirou. Most probably Eiichirou got a higher score than him on the exams, and when he heard that he is also playing Tennis too while studying for the exams at the same time, he probably got more pissed etc...

He's improving way too quickly, bc it usually takes someone a few years to get a good stroke and there's no way a beginner could return an extremely fast serve like that.
There's no way he can win this upcoming match, unless his opponent forfeits or something.

Is this comment too negative?

Yes... lol.

I know what you mean though. Its a sport you just can't walk into at that age, most pros start playing between 4-8 years old. But in the world of anime anything is possible so saying that try not to let it bother you too much.

No, it's not too negative.

Ei-chan grow is surely excessive if you must consider it realistic but the series is aware of that so he won't turn into an OP main character in just a little time, actually in some manga forums, for some people it's even considered a boring series because of this.

So, sure it's a manga/anime but yet it's one of the most realistic manga/anime you can find, the next episode shouldn't disappoint you.

Good episode :D

Loving how Ei-chan is progressing bit by bit ^^

The way he started returning Takuma's receives was nice. U could feel how flustered Takuma was starting to get. And he was totally getting angry when Natsu was cheering Ei-chan on.

Nice NatsuxMaruo moments there.

Enjoying this more and more each ep. Can't wait for the tournament.

Maybe it's the guy that Ei's going to play his first match against. He recognized the name from the flyer at school, then found out this top student is indeed the same guy he's facing in the tournament. Or he could be a different competitor in the same tournament.

But he didn't return the serves, did he? all his return balls are wayward. It was explained more thoroughly in the manga that he simply predicted where the ball would go and that he has a very keen eye as well as sharp reflex. He simply followed the ball with his instinct but he has yet to acquire the ability to return it.

As for his next opponent, no he won't forfeit but you'll have to see what happen yourself. Ei-chan's growth actually reminds me of Sakuragi from Slam Dunk, it's consistent with the effort that they made. Even if at times it seems fast, you also need to take into account crazy amount of practices that Ei-chan did everyday (which was shown last episode even more than Natsu).

But Sakuragi had no character develop whatsoever, except for the Kainan match... (and it regressed from there.)

Ei-chan is extremely diligent. I don't think his improvement is too unrealistic, since there are people who have a natural knack for some sports. I doubt he'll win that match though and I expect him to lose, but after impressing the guy. Then, the next tournament he will do very well in because at the start of the series it was a timeskip about 1 year from when he started, right? And he was pretty good so I'm looking forward to that.

Can't wait to see the match.

Wow... Takuma was forced to use a slice serve in order to beat Ei-chan, talk about a sore loser.
His grades are starting to drop and he has acquired the "Master at Passing Out" trait it would seem.

Are you talking about character development or skills? because skill-wise he improved steadily through out the series (I don't know if you watch the anime or read the manga but in the manga he definitely improved to the point of being able to do feint dribble). As for character, well every sports shonen has very minimal character development. He remains a hot-headed punk just like Ei-chan will remain a meticulous yet timid person.. or like how Kuroko have the same personality from start to finish.. or how Tsubasa remains the optimistic "ball is my friend" kid from grade school all the way to his professional days.

Can't get enough of OP song.
I kinda hope Eiichiro won't win against that guy in tournament, because that would be way too easy, and eh, life is not that easy.Even if you are some kind of talented genius, you won't be able to win against one of tournament's top 5 with 1 month of training...might be negative, but i really want to see some anime taking this risk and go more realistic.
Neverthless it was an good episode, and im liking Natsu.

Anime defies that logic ^

The glasses girl was just randomly standing there blushing, twitching and surprised and know one noticed. I notice some interesting development between blonde guy at exam ranking place thing and Ei-chan, didn't think this was going to be yaoi

Not to diminish what you're saying because you're right but in the preview he says he's been playing for four months when the tournament starts.

I'd say to some degree it definitely has that unrealistic anime nature, but Baby Steps does a much more convincing and believable job of it than most sports series. Maruo doesn't get better just because 'he tries his hardest' or any of that kind of stuff.

Rather there is two things that the series does with Maruo's character. The first being his incredible eyesight which this episode noted for the first time (and it comes in at several points), and the second is his analytic nature. He spends a lot of time in matches taking notes, thinking things through, testing stuff out. The whole point of his character is that he isn't necessarily the 'smart' guy but rather incredibly good at organising data and using it to improve himself or adapt to situations.

Edit: Also people talking about the 1 month thing, it has been more time than that. The series has some strange time skips in the earlier part. I think the 4 months someone else said is correct if I remember correctly.

Oh, i see.Well this doesn't change things THAT much, of course he can improve even more in 3 months, but he still imo wouldn't have much chances against someone from top 5.We will see, hopefully im going to be surprised and he loses.

Ei-chan and his incredible eyesight at work, and it's great that the coach noticed it. Although Ei-chan wasn't able to successfully return the serve, he was still able to connect with it, and was even hit in the face! :D Getting ready for his first match, he needs to build up his endurance.

Very enjoyable episode! :D And the episode stated that 4(!!!) months have passed since he started playing tennis, not just one -- for all those people who have said he has progressed too quickly in one month.

And honestly, 4 months is plenty of time to get the basics and such down and consistent enough. Plus, he never actually returned one of Takuma's serves (they all went out). Even if he was to do it once, there's a thing called consistency. I don't think his growth has been all that abnormal, given how meticulous and diligent he is combined with his incredible eyesight.

Rant aside, it's really neat to see Maruo not care that much about his grades dropping a bit because of how much he cares about tennis. Funny Engrish moments too! xD And Maruo passing out so often is pretty amusing too. I really wonder how he's gonna fare in his first match...

Ei-chan already entering a tournament and to be drawn against the 5th seed, ouch. The serve challenge ended with the outcome as expected but for Takuma to change to a real match quality serve shows that he doesn't want anyone to know why he was angry, hope we find out one day. Also Ei-chan getting hit from a serve in the face like that has got to hurt.

I took notice of people saying they either don't like the style of the show or they don't like the speed of the characters growth. For me the style is rather refreshing in comparison to the many other high def series being animated. The characters growth to may does seem somewhat fast, but it's not out of the realm of impossibility with his skill set. One could say that even with the speed of Takuma's serve that his rather fast reflexes could in fact return the ball.

I do love this series though. It may not be/ become as good as cross game was "imo" but it's great in it's own right so far.
