How? Is it a fucking deal with the devil kind of stuff? Psychic? Catfish knows a catfish when a catfish sees one? Do you have suspicions about people being of a different gender they say they are?

They seem the same to me. I don't see how sex would affect how I write. As for the second question, I don't really care, so I just believe them with no doubt in my mind. Do you think I'm a male or female?

I have a running theory that people who use emotes but no capital letters are either women, men posing as women, FBI agents posing as men posing as women to try to lure the pedos into jail, or just literal children.

I am pretty smug when it comes to spotting certain groups of people but I think it could also be confirmation bias. It mostly comes down to the context, what kind of things they're saying, how they are saying them, etc.

On MAL though, everyone is a dude.

No, but I can usually guess by their icon.

Smug punchable little girl, manly gar mecha pilot, whitebread isekai protagonist, big tiddy waifu (smug punchable face optional)=usually guy

pretty much any shojo or josei series, sports anime, ghibli, danganronpa, Kingdom Hearts, Tales series, Vocaloid=usually girl

shonen jump, jojo, white haired edgelord sans undertale boy, FMA, intimidating looking woman, love live, JRPGs other than Kingdom Hearts and Tales=could be either way

usernames are also usually a dead giveaway.

But uh, now that I think about it, if you're asking this, you might have something seedy in mind.

BTW I don't have a pussy woman radar capable of recognizing without hearing the voice or seeing personally.

Not really since everyone usually has a similar way of posting. As someone has mentioned, PFPs actually do sometimes correlate more with gender than typing.

Idk, for me I look at a PFP and usually try to take guesses as to what their gender might be. I'm right most of the time, but maybe that's just me.

It's more an educated guess than anything, and based on the fanbase of the series an icon is from rather than appearance for the most part.

I wouldn't say i can tell, but i think can take an educated guess. Male users usually make shorter posts, unless they're engaged in a discussion with another user. Female user posts on the other hand tend to be a bit longer, with more thought put into them. They're also usually neatly divided into paragraphs, which makes for an easier reading.

I could (might, actually) be talking out of my ass though.

Certain mannerisms can give hints, but I don't make it important. There are more signs for men, though it's also a statistically safer choice.
If someone tries to act too much like a stereotypical girl here I'll assume they're male.

I can see you

You can mostly tell by their writing. Also, most men tend to have pictures of girls in their icons, and women tend to have pictures of men.

Then again, sometimes it feels like there are a lot of men in this website.

Aside from PFP, a guy's wording is more frank and to the point, even if it is a little harsh. Girls prefer to "stick to the rules" of commenting properly on a thread while trying to sound less frank about it.

These are complete generalizations btw, it isn't 100% proofable.

yeah women are usually noncommittal and politically correct.
also, there’s a certain tone or weight that is often associated with how one writes.
men = heavy
women = light, elusive
this isn’t always the case, however.

Well, both genders have different thought patterns that have been fostered by society. Its easy to see these patterns in the way a person types. It may not be apparent at first but the more you see someone type the more obvious their gender becomes.

What I just wrote is very gender neutral. I'd give an example but since right now I'm really self conscious it wouldn't work.

Hint hint: that was the example!

Same here. I don't see the benefit of knowing the other persons gender.
And just making baseless assumptions because of ones writing style or profile picture... why? What does one gain from thinking: oh, user xy is (probably) female / male / a genderless helicopter?
It's the intrawebs, there could be bots here for all I know.
But I tend to assume that everyone here is human^^

on average, girls are more apologetic in their way of writing, use more expressive punctuation/emoticons, and are less confident in their answers ("i think" rather than just a statement).

also if someone's put on their profile that they're a 12yo girl, chances are they're not.

You can take an educated guess based on profile + forum style, username, writing style and reputation (as what the user is referred to by others and as what they themselves have referred themselves to), but in the end, you have to believe them.

I assume most people to be of the sex corresponding to the the gender they have stated if selected "male" or "female", because I don't think that the vast majority is lying about it.

There is a higher chance that users with unspecified gender are female than male, since they, the females, as photophobic put it, tend to be less confident. Though they might also just get tired of attention from the opposite sex.

Also character-wise, "traps" make for the better women sometimes.

imo ive seen a few of your forum posts around and you write more like a male would (not saying this is good or bad). i would say your profile pic and signature are probably leaning a little more towards female though.

usually it's not really that hard to tell on here but there are exceptions like with most things. as far as the catfishing side of things i feel like its not even worth really thinking about, just assume people could be up to some sus activities like anywhere else online if there's a reason to but that's about it. i would definitely estimate the amount of males posing as females on MAL is lower than on world of warcraft for example. cause on WoW you're actually gonna have people giving you items and money and stuff if you make a female character with a girly name lol.

males are usually more direct/say bolder things from my experience. and on MAL in particular you will see some kind of jokes that are 99% more likely for a male to make (i dont think you do that though lol, but im talking about those "anime tiddiez" kind of jokes)

and like was said above the general style is sort of like "heavy" (male) compared to lighter (female)

Yeah I agree with the observations made here that men talk with a much more heavy tone. Its usually bolder, more direct, to the point, and can be a bit harsh. Men are also much more likely to make offensive jokes. If someone says something like "dat shit's gay," 99% chance its a dude.

Girls tend to talk with a lighter tone, its more expressive but its also more sensitive and soft. It tends to be more indirect, girls sort of want you to connect the dots more. Emojis could be very obviously feminine but most girls have a much more subtle writing style.

Then again, sometimes people throw you for a loop and you find out a guy writes like a girl or a girl writes like a guy.
