THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
This episode was fun although the story still feels a bit loose with the whole naval warfare stuff.

One thing I find more interesting is the introduction of even more technology like the water bikes. Got a weird vibe out of the episode though overall with the supernatural possession gimmick. It felt quite out of character for this show up to this point. Rats and cats confirmed to take over the world someday

I just hope the staff knows what they are doing.
1st episode that disappointed me. I'm worried as this is the best new series for me til rats happen. There are other good new shows but just good not very good. If this goes shit it'll be a very disappointing season.

Well that's pretty "disturbing" problem for running out of toilet paper, but it seems some of the crew doesn't really mind about it. LOL
What more disturbing is the crew that didn't go to the mall. They're starting to get bored and some of it seems to get "hallucinated" and one is so unlucky to be "possessed".
There they said it again... "BLUE MERMAID" with "BLOOMER MAID". LOL

I'll take a guess, it's the rats isn't it? An aggression causing disease maybe? Explains the rogue instructor, the random berserk this episode and the German ship's mutiny.

NO TOILET PAPER! XD

Okay so with this episode's information I'd say the mystery is beginning to be solved. Those mice/hamsters/whatever that cause the girls to go berserk must be behind the mutinies and everything. Not sure I like magical brainwashing mice as the explanation but...oh well. The importance of the cats has suddenly skyrocketed anyway. But who unleashed these rats, and why?

My concern for poor Moka grows. Please don't have Mike fight a brainwashed Moka show, I'd hate that! :(

Seems more like a rabies infestation than a conspiracy after this, though I can't help but feel like that'd be too convenient because Tateishi clearly went berserk from it, and that's not exactly what I'd label as the calm and cold mindset you'd have to have to commit mutiny and stuff... so idk, I'm still not convinced

A rat inside a box from "Abyss" mail delivery... (anything with "abyss" word is bad lol)
So there is someone deliberately delivering rats to the ships, and maybe he/she's the true perpetrator.

And 10 cm cannon from Akashi! This means increasing firepower and surface battle capability for Harekaze, so I can expect more battle for next episodes.

So it's mind control or something like that.

Anyway, at this point I can't say it's surprising, but damn plot logic... The Harekaze is under suspicion but let's just upgrade their weaponry and be on our way... how about providing an escort instead?

Well, at least it's funny in a way.

Hm I dunno yet. I feel like the appearance of the mind affecting rat will definitely be important later, but I'm not entirely sure how yet. I don't think this rat is the answer to everything, although it does answer some questions. One thing that isn't solved from this revelation is why the teacher attacked them at the beginning. It's clear that the rat makes people openly agressive and rash, but the teacher was completely calm and emotionless when she attacked and her eyes weren't glowing red like Tama's when she was 'infected' so for now the rat is probably something like a red herring to set up for a grand reveal later in the series.

Oh and Captain is still so kind, helping a fallen child which leads to her 'capture.' Man they sure tricked me xD
Also, I feel like some internal conflict is gonna come up between Mashiro and Akeno, probably Mashiro feeling insecure and blaming Akeno? Or her insecurities somehow being used as a source of conflict until her mother tells her why she's in the Harekaze.

Also, yeah pretty much confirmed something's up with the Musashi now, gg hope the Harekaze can help them without falling into some trap that incriminates them. Feel like Minami's investigation into the rat will be key here, and here's to hoping that the ships that are going to help the Musashi don't end up going crazy too (from the rats maybe)

Seems to me that the strange behaviour and mutiny is related to that rat they took inboard.
But nothing is for sure yet.
It seems the crew is safe for the time being but a lot can still happen.
The girls could asking for an escort from the safety department till the reach the school which would prove their innocence and which would also keep them safe from other ships.
But i guess they didn't think of the option.

IMO, direct confrontation will be unlikely.

One hit from 46 cm cannons of Musashi, Harekaze will be finished... and Musashi have 3 batteries of those. Her secondary cannons (15.5 cm triple turrets) are also deadly for small ships, if the ship specifications are same with the real one from WWII.

They couldn't.
Akashi and Mamiya were ordered to send supply for (and investigate) Musashi. Also... the 2 destroyers (Y470 Hamakaze and Y471 Maikaze) were needed to escort them until they reached that big battleship, since Akashi and Mamiya aren't battle-purpose ships.

As for requesting the other ships, they also couldn't. From the map at ep.3, most of them were cruising away/another direction from Harekaze.

No, the "possession" scene was not stupid in the least, story-wise. Now we're starting to get a glimpse as to what's afflicting people and making them be "aggressive".
Shima, being laid-back as she's portrayed, quickly became feral and nuts when she was afflicted. It would explain how a good-natured Instructor would become so antagonistic towards her freshman students seemingly out of the blue.

Now, they're teasing us that it has something to do with the "hamster"-looking creature. So, rather than hypnotism, it could be some sort of "illness" that it somehow spreads.

Anyway, this episode is a nice break from the chaotic battle-of-the-week formula they have followed so far. If anything, they just got an upgrade to their armament, and (I'm hoping) restocked their ammunition.
Meaning, next episode should feature another epic naval engagement!

The lax attitude of most of Harekaze's crew even after being fired upon three times was still pretty crazy… I feel ya, Mi-chan.

But I had a sense from the beginning that this was more than just a human conflict, and all the 'mutinies' had something with the Blue Mermaids' past… still the exact form that took was pretty direct and downright frightening. I'd think the crew would be much more shaken up by Tama going berserk though the confusion of their situation could have overwhelmed them.
Still I've got to wonder if there's more than just possession:

And, I wonder what's happened to the Musashi's crew. They've been out of contact for longer than the Harekaze, and none of them were shown controlling the ship…

I just thought it might send a message of goodwill but your right it might take several days before another ship gets near them.

Wasn't the Musashi a Yamoto-class battleship?
Which would make it the biggest battleship ever build together with the Yamoto.
If you compare it to something German than it's comparable to the Bismarck-class, the Bismarck and the Tirpitz.
Basically the battleships that where most feared by the allies.

tbh, it was getting more interesting. well not in the first half but i like the first half :D
the second half definetely interesting. there are some new character/cap from 2 ships. looking cool too i like it. but that possesion scene where the white hair girl suddenly went berserk suprised me well. didn't see that coming and i'm guessing the mouse was the one who possesed the girl ? sounds ridiculous but interesting imo.

i'm glad they are save finally. now it's time for Musashi. i've got a bad feeling about Musashi. i feel they situation might be worse than Harekaze. let's see.....looking foward for the next episode.

@Aversa
yeah....Musashi is the same ship/class like Yamato but i guess Yamato is in the no.1 position in Yamato-class battleship or more like the big sisters, like in Aoki Hagane the second movie.
and there is still one more Yamato-class battle ship according wiki btw. it is Shinano.

I looked it up as well because I was confused. She used the pronoun "washi" (儂) which, according to Jisho at least, is used by elderly males.

I can't help but laugh at the last line.

You were right. But I would say we shouldn't kill the rat. More like we should experiment on it to solve this issue entirely.

Anyways, as others have said, the rat/hamster probably isn't the entire truth. It's probably more, though it is a major plot point. So far everything has it's purpose.
I mean I thought the cat would just be there to be a joke, but apparently it has a role.
Maybe it will have to go rat-hunting later on.

And yea rabies afflicting navy lolis!

Also, 10cm gun! Improved range, rate of fire and AA. The 10cm were one of the best heavy anti-air guns during the war. I think their turret #3 was down, so that's where it's going to be probably mounted at.
And I would assume they refill their torpedoes! More battles in the future.

So far, the series is great, episodes of non-stop battles then a care-free episode but still did not neglect the plot. Very well done.
Personally, I don't like using supernatural rabies infected rats/hamsters, but I guess it's the best plot device they can use to maintain a friendly atmosphere and not blame the problem on a specific person.

Regardless, it wasn't done poorly, so even though I don't like the rat idea, it might turns out to be very good regardless since so far the show has been executed flawlessly.

So far every other show this season has been disappointing me after the first or second episode. Despite having high expectations and anticipation for them... Surprisingly this show which I didn't expect that highly of is probably going to be one of my favorites this season.

Well, we can't say for sure for Bismarck/Tirpitz vs Musashi since they never engaged in a battle. But as far as I know, Musashi was far heavier and had the largest naval gun at that time.

It is quite incorrect to say Shinano was a Yamato-class battleship, since she was converted into aircraft carrier on mid-construction... and never saw any real actions.

Individually each flag means

center flag - X-ray- Stop all intentions and pay attention to my signals
bottom flag- India - turning to port

I have no idea what the top flag means. I couldn't find it in international signal flag codes. It could be Delta(which looks pretty close), which would mean maneuvering with difficulty.

All together they will have a different meaning, since hoisting multiple flags on close proximity will give them a different meaning entirely. Something which I hope a navy man here could help with
