I won't use any site which locks in my data, i.e. doesn't export a widely accepted format - as it is the case with anilist. The leading German anime DB, anisearch, even has export as a pay-to-use feature. Blech!

I keep maintaining my data on MAL and export it to anilist, anisearch, anidb and anime-planet every 4 weeks. That way my ratings matter there as well. No plan to change that, MAL is rough but solid. In terms of use, I use anidb for searches and contributing content (tagging, images etc.) because both functions suck on MAL in comparison.I also use anidb's ratings, because they are normalized and that way closer to a reliable resource. MAL's bot and shounen fanboy distorted ratings are meaningless for my individual taste.

I like MAL's because of their very simple UI and layout. And the forums are always new. Even though AniList has a more modern UI, the forums are basically dead and I don't like the list over there.

MAL has more active and cringey forums
AL has global activity
AL sometimes has entries that MAL doesn't (talking about manga in my case)
MAL has custom list layout
AL can approve of a modification change faster
AL has more statistics

I'd say MAL is superior in an open-and-use situation, while AL is superior in a wait-and-search situation.

Oh! I use Anilist to track the newest hentai release too!

MyAnimeList 101 times out of 100! I first came upon MyAnimelist and this is where I have grown up as an anime lover and will continue to use it until the very end!

I use Anilist just to list my hentai and score them, but even so, I still find MAL better in many aspects. Here are just a few!

1. Speed. Maybe perhaps it's "outdated" but it also means that search and browse processes are faster. Anilist's "modernity" has those "smooth transitions" when searching, overall making the browsing section A LOT MORE TIME-CONSUMING.

2. More "sophisticated" DB. One of the main reasons why MyAnimeList is "not as fast" as Anilist when it comes to the manga database is that the guidelines require more things than Anilist's manga database guidelines. What does this prove? We only allow what's truly optimal for the manga community!

3. MAL Rewrite. This is one of the things why MAL is superior than anything else. The synopses written by MAL Rewrite are of truly high quality that a lot of websites use it as their standard! Heck—even licensing sites use Rewrite synopses!

MAL for regular usage and AniList for backup. AniList for expanded favorites also. Though another thing I find interesting or convenient on AniList is that it looks the same on Android devices as on a PC.

For me, the close winner is MAL.

I've never been to anilist tbh.. but these style of forums are my preference. I'm most used to this kind of simple layout with a relatively small community and subforums.

I'm not a fan of reddit style forums that are based on voting. Disqus, twitter, etc. They are all highly abused.

It's especially annoying to see these kinds of forums when the community is relatively small, like how the LoL forums used to be for instance. It becomes that much more obvious how controlled all of it is.

I personally like Anilist more. You don't have to become a MAL Supporter to add as many favorite characters or anime as you want. Uploading videos and images is more up-to-date on there. The community itself is also pretty open and friendly. There are of course some people here on MAL that I get along with. But I feel like I'm less likely to run into arguments with people on Anilist.

Anilist & Anime-Planet have a better search database for Anime & Manga compared to MyAnimeList, but I don't like either's layout. Even the hook of more characters isn't big with me, because I use MyWaifuList for that (which is adequate.)

So no, sticking with MAL, I like it here.

AniList - Larger Manga/Manhwa and Light Novel database
Every time I look for a Manhwa on this site it seems like it isn’t there so I ended creating an AniList account just so I can catalog some of the Manhwa and LN’s I’ve read. Idk if the mods read the requests.

I actually prefer MAL.

MAL forums have always been Troll-Central. Nothing to do except embrace that and have fun with it.
It's not really a problem, because people are confrontational as all hell, but aren't exactly lunatics.

I can discuss things with people here without feeling like I'm on Crazy Twitter Land. Since I don't exactly have thin skin, I actually appreciate the "Fuck Your Feelings" atmosphere that MAL has. It's kind of unique.

Comparatively, the very first time I tried to discuss something on AniList, the topic devolved into White Supremacy politics within minutes.
The difference is that it didn't just feel like a bunch of trolls memeing the shit out of each other, which I'm always willing to participate it. It genuinely felt like masked political indoctrination.

Never touched AniList again. Especially since I don't actually list anime anymore. I use these sites for the social features and the (admittedly awesome) databases alone.

I use myanimelist, animeplanet and anidb. I have previously checked it out anilist, but i didn't find anything special which it can provide which others don't.

Sure, anilist looks pretty. but the truth of the matter is because of the features that makes it look pretty just makes it harder to use. (similar case to anidb, which has a detailed template which is harder to use. but still those details are good for reference purpose even if its not very usable). I think if i am looking for something pretty and neat, animeplanet should suffices enough for me

While I've been using MAL since 2009, since around 2019 I actually started using Anilist a bit more.
The main reasons why I still use MAL is mostly because I've been here for so long that it just feels like a sin to abandon an 11 year old account. And the other reason is prolly something nobody gives that much importance to, but it's the serialization info on every manga. I just like to have a database of manga magazines, and AL doesn't have that.

AL is great for reviews tho, not only gives each review a page to shine and allows pictures to be posted in them, making them just that much more presenteable, but each and every review does appear in the main page, giving you a chance to be more visible.

The whole community feels more interactive, like a social media, which has the pros and cons of any social media. I've met incredible people there, and I've seen my fair share of drama and dumb stuff happening.

The forums there are less active, but I don't see that as a negative and I find myself interacting there more than here, really.

i think they both have their advantages and disadvantages, anilist's database is larger and usually faster while mal's is usually a bit higher quality. anilist has more features and for the design i would say mal's is a bit dated compared to anilist's (although im not super keen on AL's design either). i would say that anilist is the better site if the only thing your doing is listing, since compared to mal the community is pretty much nonexistent and mal's forums are 10x better.

Tbh, from my experience, MAL's database is shit compared to AniList's. Seriously, half the stuff I want to read either doesn't have a page here or has been "pending approval" for a year or better (looking at you, half of Tezuka's catalogue). AniList? Has all of it ready to be added, no problem.

To be honest, the only thing that keeps me here is a handful of list customization features and achievements on Anime+. Has it not been for those, I'd switch over to AniList completely months ago.

Doesn't MAL also just have more users ?

When deciding between 2 things that are almost identical i think it's a very important factor Wich one simply gets more traffic

That's essentially how the ps4 won on release.

Both have their advantages, though I kinda prefer Anime-Planet since I get to list as many faves as I want. And also because scores are not as prominent on work pages over there, which is useful since I often don't want to know the score of a thing before I watch it.

I'm not a big anime/manga fan like most people here and I don't use any of them that much due to having a life outside this, but I prefer MAL since I started with MAL. Although I am impressed with AniList in some ways.

MAL has a lot of issues that are well-known, but it doesn't affect me as I just want to save/update my anime/manga lists (whenever I remember that).

One feature AniList has over MAL is that you can choose what language you want the titles to be; English or Japanese.
- Another thing some people appreciate is its scoring system.

* But in my opinion, AniList's UI is what carries 70% of it, and the UX isn't the best in some places. For me, I'd rather have an "old classic design" that is simple and "easy to learn" than having a "modern up-to-date design" that will require me take X amount of time to learn how to find Y or Z etc.
--The navigation around for forum is weird as hell and I have no idea what the person behind that dumb design was thinking in the first place.
-- I also don't understand why having two links to your user profile in the header menu was a good idea.

* If you ever want to go into any of the informational pages of the website, you will have to scroll down to the bottom since adding them as menu items in the header hasn't been an idea. If you're unlucky, the page you are on has the infinite scroll feature so good luck ever reaching the bottom.
- At least MAL has some of its footer links present in the header as well.

* AniList's search function isn't the best, it needs some improvement on that part.

* The social part is good too, but I don't use it. It's similar to Twitter's feed, but more autistic.

* This doesn't affect me at all, but the the creator has been talking about open sourcing the website for years, but never does it. I mean, either do it or don't. His excuse is he wants to "clean up the codebase" first - which apparently takes forever for this guy.

I get the impression - at least from the few times he writes in the Discord server - that he focuses more on the GraphQL API than on fixing/updating the website - maybe I'm wrong about it.
- I work as a dev myself so I know it can be tricky with dev stuff, and that you have a life outside anime - especially if its a hobby/side project, but postponing open sourcing it for years is ridiculous - especially if there's a few people who wants to contribute to it and that it takes time to fix some issues the website has.

* I think it is ridiculously stupid that there's no way to export your data. And apparently it's been on the "roadmap" for over three years; so apparently the priorities aren't always on basic functionality but either the horrendous UI or that API.

* Since the website is living off by donations, I'd appreciate if there was a transparency on how much money was donated each month and the costs for maintaining the website and how much the creator keeps to himself. Like Wikipedia and AO3 does.
- I am aware he is not obligated to do so since he's private person and not an non-profit organization, but considering he gets money from teenagers and up I think it would benefit the trust towards the website a bit more or so.
(Maybe you can see it somehow, but I haven't found it yet?)

To end this; I think AniList is a good website, it just needs a bit more polishing. Honestly, I don't think it'll stay up for another 10-15 years, even though it's been up for six or seven years so far. Some other reasons why I think this:
* I think the creator needs to expand the dev team so that it includes more than two people.
* Sort out the priorities on what to implement on the website and not pretending to "focus on open sourcing it" or focus so much on the UI.
* Because it lives on donations so it doesn't give off it has secured its own survival for 10 years or more in the future.

I think MAL will survive better, despite its drawbacks.
- All in all, there aren't any major features that AniList has over MAL that would make me switch.

The most important thing is the database.

MAL has better one. I don't even have to choice between the two when there is only one reasonable choice.

The same goes for the other similar sites. Until there is one with larger database which cover all my entries, I don't think I'll ever think about migration.
