I'm glad I wasn't the only one who was left fairly confused with the story. Never seen the original series, so I thought it was either because of that or that I got crappy subs. Visually it was great but taking the story and characters into consideration, I'd give it a 6/10.

Not quite sure why Harlock seemed to make Yama his successor. I mean, that guy was one hell of a turncoat, just bouncing back and forth between Harlock and his brother.

Really stunning visuals, at first when I found out it was CGI I was a bit disappointed, but it was actually incredibly impressive and beautiful. Some of the character faces were oddly lacking in emotion at times, but impressive nonetheless. The story on the other hand was a convoluted mess. I also could not care less about Ezra and Yama's relationship yet over and over and over again it focused on it.

I've only seen Galaxy Express 999 and Adieu Galaxy Express 999, which Harlock appears in, and they were some of the first anime I ever watched. So I'm going to go 5/10 for amazing visuals and the nostalgia factor. As far as characters and plot it was a miss.

Oh, and it was cool hearing Whitebeard's voice again.

Incredible visuals, ambitious designs and a blockbuster soundtrack don't completely make up for the weak characterizations. But I must admit I was still blown away about how good it looked for being CGI. You can really tell when there's a huge budget involved.

I've read that the producers didn't recoup their investment, so I'm guessing a sequel is out of the question. It's a shame because with a good script they could have done something really special.

I haven't seen or read any of the Captain Harlock series though I'm familiar with other Leiji Matsumoto's works, so I haven got to say anything about the adaptation except that the CGI was great, Kei's hair in particular is downright from Leijiverse if nothing else! The story was just OK. Overall 7/10 because I enjoyed it.

Good movie, I'm a sucker for sci-fi but really..there should be a limit to how many times one can change side within 2 hours...

Gundam just isn't gundam without a giant laser that can hit the earth from space... oh wait...

Well... at least the lasers were pretty and the action was nice. I like space battles.

Story was... "okay" at best. The characters were all so stupid, like they can't think past 2 feet in front of them. Called it on the "next" Harlock at the start of the show...

6/10 (above average) and only because the action was pretty good. Good concept, mediocre execution.

Well I haven't really watched the Captain Harlock anime so I enjoyed it, Yama's side changes were one of the main things I didn't like in this movie. I mean come on nobody should be swayed that easily. Captain Harlock is my favourite character without a doubt, He was awesome.

The CGI was very well made, it's been a while since I saw something on the level of FF advent children, the scenery especially, the faces were kind of unnatural at times especially when they smiled but overall it was very well made.

It was incredible seeing Harlock again, I didn't like the story though. Nice character design, but the animation was so stiff... they were like puppets, mannequins, imitations of humans without life. Japan still needs to learn a lot from American 3D animators.

Can someone explain the whole deal with Ezra, Nami and Logan?? Ezra made a comment of how Nami wasn't faithful to his bed. So did she cheat on him or something even though she's a vegetable?? Did she sleep with his brother before or something? Why did she choose Ezra over Logan? SO MUCH that I feel wasn't explained properly, but very good for one movie.

It was visually stunning! Perfect use of cgi in detailing the people, spaceships and environment. You could see they worked with a big budget. However, the story and the characters were a bit boring. The little brother changes sides like 4 times, while the older brother is very unlikable. I wanted Harlock to have more badass moments and fight scenes. Also, his underlings didn't really have much development.

Visually stunning moslty, not sure if its up to Advent Children standards though, story and characters were pretty meh. Maybe it's' because I don't have any prior knowledge of the series...I wasn't engaged in anything that was happening :/

Was hoping for more, 6/10

So pretty...
But sooo dumb.
But soooooo pretty!

argh

The Gaia Coalition was like "welp we just fired a huge cannon and missed, no need to fire again 'cause electricity costs money and we obliterated our own fleet anyway". Never mind that Kaleido Star System or whatever could probably destroy a planet just as well... Well, it looked great, music was epic as well, but I literally kept thinking to myself everytime the melodrama came, or the pacing jumped exposition, or the characters randomly changed... "man this is awful". But then that ending.

[spoiler]Apparently myself and only like two other people on this thread think Yama and Harlock are the same person.

With his talk of starting again by unraveling time, talking about continuing the legacy before passing the helm and detonator, releasing the Dark Matter that didn't have an adverse affect on the planet (cause it was already there), the scene of the last bomb being dropped onto Earth, the same flower Yama's mother had bloomed being on Earth and growing in the glass cylinder Harlock already had, Miime returning after she said, "I am not sad, for I will always be by your side" and saying the same to Yama after she materializes again, the exact same scar, the hair..... I thought it was obvious. The last ten minutes completely changed my mind of the film, and makes everything seem alright. 7/10

Just happened to watch this flick last night, though only by pure coincidence, as I was zapping around and it was aired on some local niche channel.

Now this is actually my first encounter with the Harlock (Or Leji-) Verse in general, so I'll need some more incarnations for reference.

I have to say that I usually watch such stories with mixed feelings as I tend to support established jurisdictions (except maybe if they're communism-based) against pirate/rebel characters (Please don't ask me why, just. Don't.)

This movie was great looking. Point. That's all (but it is a lot for a CGI animation).

I wasn't expecting a new chapter to this universe but a new story made to attract the new generations while giving some fan-service to the older ones.
- the young boy becoming a part of Harlock's crew formula was needed for the outside point-of-view
- the story about finding a new home and the bad earth government is a re-use of the classic elements: neither good nor bad, rather a background pretext for gorgeous action scenes on land or in space
- the re-design of the pirate ship was nice with this organic touch, the old characters were all easy to recognize
- the new Harlock "mythology" created for this movie bothered me a bit, it does not serve the new story nor can it appeal to old-time fans. All this feels like a forced way to open a path toward sequels set in the same reality (maybe on different media)
- while all characters were poorly characterized due to the chosen format, the ones who get the most attention are the brothers. One should have been kept as the public eye rather than becoming the fool that was made of him, the other is correct.
- but the most important point against this actualization is the eponymous character himself! (it should be part of the previous point but I find it too important) The title being "Captain Harlock", one would expect a strong character able to stand on his own under this name. But what we see during two hours is the astonishing spectacle of an empty shell who hides itself under a cloak of darkness (because being dark is being cool) and a number of awesome action demonstrations (because doing awesome things is being cool). Sadly, this poor shadow of a glorious hero of our past, despite his uncannily good 3D CGI representation of this beloved romantic hero, wasn't able to fool me long enough to support my lack of interest for the movie story, after all he was the perfect incarnation of it: over-capitalization on the look to the detriment of the inside.
I do not understand why the romantic type of character was judged to not fit to our modern times. How is he more contemporary relevant as this "darky" young male/ghost?
- but people who liked one or more old works around this universe will still appreciate the few references included only for their sake (Toshiro for example, how the hell are newcomers supposed to understand it?) and they will get those great action scenes they only dreamed about.

My personal note would be a 4+ (4 if I prioritize the content over the look like I do usually, 5 if I take them both equally). But I liked the previous series/movies/manga.
An objective note would be 6+ (same as above), because it is clearly more focused on fishing a new public (like the people above) than the old one (me). And it has what it needs to achieve that. But it still feels too bland to be a 8, due to its "blockbuster flaws".

The use of CGI and fluid 3D animation was stunning. And the action scenes were practically the meat of the movie. However, the plot got confusing in the 2nd half and the MC switched sides too much and too easily. Overall, very entertaining but couldve been better. I'll check out the main series someday.

8/10

Just watched it and well I must say that I am a bit dissapointed. I do not know anything about Harlock aside from this movie so I may be missing some key information.

The movie was grand in the visual aspect. The ship battles were sleek and cool and the detail of the imagery was very fine. Being a 3D CGI film some of the characters looked a bit wonky. Particularly I did not like how Kei looked at all. Facial expressions were a bit weird at times, when a character was sad their face looked rather blank and awkward but it may be hard to depict emotions with this style of animation.

Soundtrack was great, adding to the experience with some very powerful conpositions, but not memorable. Voice acting wise there wasn't any really good snippets from the characters. A decent performance by all, nothing worth praising.

Characters were alright. We gain a bit of background into the main ones but some characters I don't understand why they were included at all. Nami's history and inclusion felt very lackluster and out of place. I'm a fan of romances and love-dovey shit but in this movie it felt out of place and unneeded. Captain Harlock is a badass, nuff said.

Do I regret watching this? Not at all. Is this a movie that I'll look back and think about rewatching? Most likely not. It's a one time movie that delivers exciting and cool sci-fi space battels with lasers and giant lasers that brings out the nerd in all of us.

A continuation of the story may be interesting and that would be something that I will welcome with open arms.

I think toei manage to make the story look better/enjoyable to watch. and tbh, i didn't expect that. from overall thoughts, i think it's one of my fav 3D type of anime other than Aoki Hagane. obvious there is a difference. not in story, but in the atmosphere of the show. Aoki Hagane more look like an anime, well it's an anime lol. but this one, captain harlock, when i watched it, it felt like i was watching a hollywood movies which pretty unique coming from toei. i really like it alot.

but obvious, there are some parts that i feel like mehhh in the story/character. for the most part, the story, i think it was pretty well done or more like okay. i like Harlock's character and past the most. but for the simblings one...it was mehh to me. it wasn't generic but...it felt like just meh...to me. but regardless, i enjoyed this series alot.

in addition the soundtrack sounds great and the 3D animation looks so detail and didn't looks so awkward like for example; Ajin. the animation, they managed to make it looked as cool as possible and looks realistic as possibile which i really like about the animation.

although the conclusion didn't satisfy me that much...
9/10 from me. which toei will make this kind of series again in movie type. i really enjoy it a lot. thanks for the show...i guess xD

That was pretty awesome that we got a (mostly)badass modern cgi Captain Harlock movie! Not quite the best plot around the middle with all the flip flopping but it was still fun to watch. Also that cgi was stunning with all of the space effects. Gonna have to rewatch it again if only just to oogle those parts a bit more. I think with maybe another half hour of run time they could have serious filled out the majority of the gaps with a bit of character exposition. It wouldn't have hurt fluffing out the supporting characters a bit either.

One thing is for sure I'm glad with how it ended with the story of the ship Arcadia and Captain Harlock not dying... Looking at you Space Battleship Yamato movie.

I had a lot of reservations at first (i really hate how a lot of animations make use of CGI, so many just look like utter shit visually) but this was amazing well made. While the plot wasn't the best thing around, I just couldn't help but get so into the characters and Harlock himself...amazingly well done battles as well.

It took a lot out of me to watch the original Gundam, but...I think I found the motivation to once again watch another 70s anime. If this was just a re-visioning, I look forward to being introduced for the first time to one of Leiji's famous works.

Gorgeous visuals, detailed backgrounds and meh story is all I could say about this show. The flip-flop betrayal of Yama was cringey to watch, as was petty love triangle that always shape the antagonists as motive....

The instant Miyuki Sawashiro's chara was introduced, I thought "here we go again" as would be another love-struck development. But still the Elf-alien was not as hot as creepy. Also wasn't in the end Gaia fleet surrounded pirate ship, but they flew away as cooly camera pans away......wtf

So Yama is the new captain Harlock, or what? I'm wondering if the real Harlock is dead? That was a confusing ending for real. I was surprised by Ezra's aid of the Arcadia in reaching earth, but why did they leave it if it was livable? A lot of things didn't make sense at the end. I also believe other characters weren't given enough screen time like Kei, her relevance was shunned out.

But we can't take away the great animation it had, the CGIs were out of this world and realistic and most of all I enjoyed it. 8/10.

I liked the movie quite a lot tbh, the cgi was good. After seeing all the bad reviews I'd thought the movie would be awful...well, I LIKED IT!
The character development was lacking, no doubt about that. But I think it was well enough for a movie like this one.

Personal rating : 9/10

This was a rather confusing entry in the Harlock universe. I've seen pretty much everything else Harlock-related that exists, and I saved this movie for last. I didn't expect a masterpiece, but it left many questions, and it never really "ended," as they never really achieved anything.

The CGI wasn't bad, but I prefer Harlock in 2D. It was mildly entertaining, but if you want quality Harlock, go watch the 1978 or 1982 series.

so necro post but couldn't help it. Binged the series for new years (the full series in chronological release order 70s-2013) and was just disappointed with this movie. While its graphically stunning for being CGI, the story and plot plot was overall just stupid compared to the rest of the Harlock series. (and that's including the herlock endless odyssey ending) Convoluted and overall weak story.
