THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Now we're finally reaching the juicy part of the series. This episode is the reason why some people started calling this Suffering in Abyss and the adaptation didn't disappoint me at all. It did justice to the manga or even better with the music and overall atmosphere throughout the episode.

Episode ended with the introduction of Nanachi the furry Narehate (or Hollow as the translation goes)

Oh this episode was so intense, great that they didn't shy away from showing blood and disturbing scenes.

Also cool that we finally got to see Nanachi and I have a very positive first impression of her.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

Pretty thrilling episode. It goes to show just how dangerous that layer is already. They made Riko suffer this episode and it employed a great amount of psychology into her character as she dealt with the pain, both physically and mentally.

One other thing I think this episode did really well is to show how much human Reg has become. When Riko was suffering, he really cried and didn't want to lose her while feeling helpless.

Glad to see Nanachi showing up this episode. (I like the voice acting tbh, really makes the character sound real)

Wow... I did not need the stress from this episode right now XD

But this is getting so good, if there was any doubt before that this was AotS, it should be pretty thoroughly gone now.

Small question, one that I don't want to see anything beyond what has been explicitly said in the anime already, NO SPOILERS: Didn't they mention the word "Hollow" previously? I feel like I remember them saying it before, but I don't remember when it was or what they said... Or I could just be crazy.

They did indeed mention it. It was in the scene just after the OP in Episode 3. Lyza uses the term when she gives her thoughts on the small boy following her around in her letter.

The show went dark real quick. Honestly, it was hard watching Riko was suffer so much. Had to close my eyes a few times. And it was heartbreaking seeing Reg's reaction. ;-;

This Nanachi character was finally introduced. A very cute character. Can't wait to see her in the next episode.

Hey, the "sleeping-bunny" girl finally appear
But seems there's more another thing that really matters for now, Riko's condition... getting stabbed, poisoned, bleeding, then lose her hand. I know the Anime is kinda weird ever since she meet with Ozen, but never expected to be this creepy. The bleeding is feel normal but the moment Reg breaking Riko's bone...

After hearing about how dark manga can get I was sort of disappointed because of how kinda toothless some of the episodes seemed as the duo had no bigger problems while descending. But this episode. Wow. It made me cringe. I was so uneasy. I don't want to watch these kids suffer. I hope it won't be this bad later on.

Things got dark really fast in this episode. That orbed-piercer was very dangerous. One of it's spikes got into Riko's hand and she was poisoned. I felt really bad for her. It was hard to watch her suffer. Reg's reaction was heartbreaking. Thankfully, someone with bunny ears took them to their hideout.

This episode destroyed me.

That monster had a pretty cool design, I did not expect it to be that intelligent. :o

I just couldn't watch Riko and Reg suffering like that, damn it Riko why couldn't you have taken a safer position? :((
The voice acting was excellent, the pain was real. Riko's bleeding face and Reg crying, damn it was so hard to watch the suffering.

Nanachi seems nice and interesting thing she said about the curse not being present, would that mean the curse has a physical form?

That was hard to watch. Really it was. I was cringing and squirming more than I would like throughout most of that. I just got out of seeing the new horror movie IT which never made feel as uncomfortable as watching Riko suffer so bad.

Holy mother of God that was intense. I had heard rumours about how the show was going to turn dark but I didn't think it was going to be this intense.

I honestly loved this episode because it proved that this series isn't going to shy away from these things.

Had to cringe so many times, it was gruesome. First steps into the 4th layer and already getting completely destroyed by that insane creature.

The voice acting was amazing in this episode, you could feel the hearts breaking.

Let's see what Nanachi has in store, we know she has very good equipment and whistles hanging in her house. And she's a hollow which will likely be explained next episode i assume.

Holy fuck/10.

I knew from the start that this manga had this in stock, I tought it will show on episode like 6 but well... the lower they get the darker this anime become and I think it's great and realistic. The atmosphere was perfect, it felt like I could feel what Riko and Reg felt. More mysteries with Nanachi the "hollow" and how she can "see the curse". Can't wait for next episode.

I loved it how the lack of just that bit of first aid knowledge of Reg could've costed Riko her life.
Riko's there purple, then Nanachi just goes and tell Reg "Breath into her, but slowly... Also, pinch her nose shut... and tilt up her chin..."--done.
Such an apparently-irreversible situation was reversed so simply.

This episode turn a 9/10 into a 10/10 for me

i was expecting it to be darker. it wasn´t that "dark" but instead felt really, but REALLY painful and I´m really indolent to suffering in anime. so the fact an anime can evoke that sensation was a big plus.

After so much talk of how horrible and unforgiving a place like the Abyss is we finally got to see it in action. I'm looking forward to how this experience will change how Riko sees this death wish that she's set herself out on. This was easily the best episode of MiA, probably the best episode of this whole season.
