If possible, can someone explain to me that, during the chaos, they were hesitant to open the Caste's doors so that they can save the citizens sooner? It seems a bit common sense to do that quickly rather than wait for permission; of course, I could be wrong and they really do need permission in real life.

Watched the first episode but this is nothing I can find interest in. The comedy parts were fun, I'll give it that, and I like the main character, but I don't feel like wanting to keep watching.

Also, what's the deal with people being sad that the gore/violence got toned down? You enjoy seeing giant piles of corpses and gore all over the place?

Decent first episode, don't know what to make of it though. It does have potential but the mixture is a strange one.

It's the imperial palace where the Japanese Emperor resides... it's like asking "do they really have to ask permission to enter Buckingham palace?"

One of the newspaper called him "offduty SDF official", so yes, he was already part of it before it all happened. No mere civilian would simply get promoted to a military officer like that. Also there was a mistranslation. He was promoted to first Lt. instead of second Lt. actually.

You know they really should have made him look more like a soldier by showing his ID to the authorities and saying that his a soldier in the first episode to make it clear there are some instance of that happening, example when he reach his hand to a woman who is crouch down and ask him who he is but he just averted he eyes and didn't answer I think the production failed st this aspect cause now some are confused about him becoming a soldier.

The problem with doing that is that the JSDF does not have a great reputation in Japan, and their power is extremely limited within the country by the Japanese Constitution.

The same thing is true in the US. No army personnel would think of taking independent action even if the enemy suddenly appeared withing US borders. It would be illegal for them to do so. That is also true in Japan. This is why their showing him save a Japanese police officer was important. It gave him a credibility that merely flashing his badge would never have accomplished.

Not bad first episode. Of course I expect the violence and ecchi from the manga to be toned down, but we'll see how it plays out in the first few episodes.

How are you guys saying this episode was fine? It was ridiculously bad, I never seen an episode so rushed before, they didn't explain anything, everything came out of nowhere, at one moment the guy is an otaku and suddently, boom, he is from the military.

I still think this series is gonna be good, but this episode was just garbage.

Finally...have been waiting...this is damn interesting series...and damn Great.

1st Opening....Fits well and Song is good Too. Art looks great...tough Characters look different from their Manga Versions.

..Itami's Seyu (voice actor) fits him.. damn I am somewhat enjoying seeing how the freaking Empire is getting their Men Slaughtered by the Modern Weaponry..You do Not F**k with Earth...especially with JSDF!!! That Fantasy World just Bite More than They could Chew.

But Itami....Doujinshi Sale...is more important that A Fact There Is Medieval Fantasy Army Invading and Killing? LOL!!! well all we at least know that You are 1 the Most Reliable Officers in Army...MC Hero! XD

Adventure Begins!!!! XD Why is everyone pissed about Cliffhanger... we will know what will happen...JSDF will Slaughter the Army.

Why God why so many anime have to take this lighthearted silly approach.
This will be good if it was actually mature like but NO we have to make the protagonist a little silly guy that cares about nothing other than going to conventions and put some moe girls there too.
And the problem is that something doesn't fit. Is like it shouldn't be this silly or something.
Basically another immature work. Whether they show more violence or not it won't make it a work to be taken seriously.
Overlord seem to have a kind of non serious concept (RPG game turn reality thing) but it somehow manages to feel more serious work. Maybe is just the studio that makes everything feel like an SAO moe thing. I just don't know.

And the MC is fucking pathetic, people died in this attack, and what does he think about it ?

"Oh noo I couldn't buy the last doujinshi"

Yeah, i wonder if A-1 is what makes everything seem so immature.

The OP is real catchy and I cried (invisible) tears of joy on hearing Suwabe Junichi as the main character. i was getting sick of hearing Kajikaji and Matsuoka, heck I would say youthful voices in general. Hearing him as the MC is just so refreshing.

Even the ED is pretty catchy esp. the instrumental.

As for the episode itself, alright. Nothing impressive so far. The concept is interesting so it can actually become decent. Have some expectations.

The anime skips over the aftermath of the attack on Ginza. In a flashback in the manga, we get to see what it looked like from the Empire's side. The military has won, and the Tokyo riot cops are cleaning up, with water cannons and non-lethal weapons. Here's the endgame.

This should have been in the anime.

Huh. Military otaku the anime. Ep 1.

Plot: A magic gate opens in Japan and an army attacks. A SDF officer named Itami is on hand to help and the SFD to repel the forces but not without mass casualties. Sometime later and many changes to the world, the SDF dispatches a recon group to investigate the other side.

CHaracter: Itami seems like a bit of dazed otaku but it was a good shock to see him kill an enemy albeit off screen. It was good to see actually. The fact that he was accidently promoted for his heroism despite not wanting it was good for a chuckle but meh. His reaction to seeing that little girl he tried to help does make things curiouser though I don't think he'll become a gung ho killer or anything.

That general of the Enemy in the beginning was odd. His words and the way the animation made it seem that there should be something more to it but he's not scene after the 10 min mark.

ANimation/sound: OP was okay. ED was okay. The designs were varied though Itami does seem like a stoner. The beastmen designs were simplistic but I'm guessing there saving that major money for later and the tank.

4/5. I liked it but I did wanna see more first 10 minutes take up more of the episode.

I go where I wanna go, even if its into Oppai.

Well, it begins with a 3/10 for me, because the animation was not bad, and I liked the moment where the MC notice that the little girl lost his father in this attack.

This was some strange mix of being both too slowly paced in some parts and too fast paced in other parts. Some things weren't explained that probably should've been.

MC reminds me of myself (and everyone else on this site probably). Most likely the only reason this show will end up being good is because of the MC being an otaku.

Wow, enemy forces make all the show of lighting themselves up with torches and clearly displaying their build but couldn't be fucked to even secure the immediate Gate zone. "Yeah we got fukked like scrubs last time I don't even know what is on the other side of the gate since no one survived but I guess it's fine to just sit here and wait for something to come out"

I wasn't sure if they toned down on the violence because it just didn't fit with the series' overall theme or because of some other reason- Sadly I will unconsciously keep comparing the violence it to Overlord.

The anime is decent but feels like wasted potential to be a great show that adds a much more realistic touch to the fantasy adventure type of anime.
Original work is much darker and grittier showing the true colours of a medieval world. Instead of the sugar-coated version all other anime stories like to tell.

And alas A1 pictures got their hands on it sadly and a Moe studio doing a show like this. Well of course they will pander to the escapism crowd and try and romanticise it more instead censoring as much of the dark parts as they can. Of course the studio staff admits to being a bit touchy on the gore parts as well so they tone it down because they can't really handle it.

*sigh* though i hate to admit it they do a decent, at times even a great job on quality in animation and character voices so the show is still acceptable on the enjoyment scale. Season 2 becomes even better since they got a lot of criticism on the censoring part and thus added more of the content from the novel and the manga "thank god." Sadly they ruin the bad guys with that god awful typical stereotype douche design which sticks out like a sore thumb.

Thank god the main char is the kind that is rare but awesome it's one of the only reasons i still watch it. That and well Anthromorphs <3

Episode 1 is a complete bust in my opinion chaotic and not even close to manga or novel. Manga is a bit messy but novel is decent. Anime actually manages to do it worse which is beyond me.

I didn't even consider watching it because of the MC but I got really, really bored. And I was right. Fine concept with a possibility for some interesting or at least action packed development, people are actually dying, good graphics and BGM and all that ruined by another otaku insert cretin MC. Why? Just why? Why can't he be a normal person (soldier). Why make him a fucking otaku. It's not funny in the slightest, goes horribly with violence and only ruins the chance for a more serious tone. For fucks sake, you don't need a retard or social outcast to give a man a harem or have some humour in the series. Why use of the shittiest character tropes in the anime...

Itami honestly is not a social outcast: he talks about the military just being his source of income for his hobby, but he is a very natural military leader: otaku is his hobby. Granted its a huge part of his life but its still just a hobby, going by how he really acts. He is a very competent professional combat arms officer. I wouldn't have minded having him as a commander.

The otaku stuff has only shown up in maybe 4 or 5 episodes, and just as a little window dressing. It certainly is not the focus of the show, and its never part of the plot.
