Perfect story-telling. Somehow this feels nostalgic. I ended up laughing with the audience when Yotaro was performing for his Boss.

Didn't realize I was watching a 48-minute episode until I felt that it had gone too long. I would really love for future episodes to have the same length too.

...I thought the Master died when he was performing Shinigami...

EDIT:

FYI, it's "director's cut" ver. of both episodes of OVA aired on first week of the broadcast (PV2 clearly indicates so), and this "episode 1" is for that. So if you have already watched the OVA, you can set as "watched" without watching it. I'm aware that it "starts on January 8 (or 9), 2016", but it's that. The new content for the series starts next week (that's why I initially submitted as it starts January 15 (or 16), 2016.

OP aired as ED. 26:40 next.

Eh, so it's 27 minutes per episode? D: I was hoping for another 48-minute episode...

This was great. I really like it when an anime focuses on something that seems interesting yet I know nothing about, and in addition to learning about rakugo I get this intriguing and engaging mix of characters and drama. The 48 minutes really flew by .... can't wait for more.

This was actually a lot more entertaining than I thought. I've never really heard of Rakugo before but its seems somekind of storytelling while sitting down. Kinda like Kabuki I guess. Well Im now looking forward for the next episode.

Okay. Besides ERASED, finally another elite anime this season. In fact, I'd say I enjoyed this even more than ERASED, as it was much more engrossing. Despite the extra long run-time, this episode flew by. It almost felt like a feature length film. I loved it from beginning to end.

<3 Kobayashi Yuu as Konatsu. She's one of my favorite seiyuu, so I'm definitely going to be enjoying this one.

This episode totally flew. Didn't realize it was 47 minutes until it was almost over. The show is already good even though I was reliant on the subs, but if I were able to understand Japanese I can only imagine how much more enjoyable it would be since I'd be able to watch the good character acting.

Good job, Studio DEEN.

Regarding the show's timeline:

I was watching the first episode (for like the 5th time) and I finally noticed this

The date on the magazine reads 1979 and the butler's dialogue state that it was 20 yrs ago. Making the current timeline 1992, right?

I always just assumed that because of the show title that the current timeline would be in the Showa period (1926–1989) but apparently it's in the early Heisei period (1989–present), and the flashbacks are from the showa period.

Either way the show has done a good job of setting up the right tone and mood to go with their time period. It's really impressive.

Was Japan still quite sexist in 1992? O.o

Japan is still quite sexist now. The country is still really behind the curve in terms of gender equality, minority rights and LGBT progression, despite being a first world country. If you think America is bad, Japan is even worse.

---

OT: I absolutely love the first episode. The characters are amazing, the rakugo is really interesting to see as I never knew about that and the art style is just so appealing.

It's a strong contender for AOTS and maybe AOTY for me.

If you don't know about Rakugo, how can you speak so confidently about Japanese society? Japan is not the west, their issues are not the same issues that the west had. Homosexuality was never considered a sin in Japan, and their "sexism" had little to do with gender, but (similar to the west) was a natural reaction to the questions of survival. In Japan extended families have an enormous amount of importance to the Japanese, something that the west really cannot understand. But as Ruth Benedict pointed out 70 years ago in her classic book on Japan, sex in Japan is something very different than it is in the west.

Of course in Japan sexuality has to take a backseat to family, but everything in Japan took a back seat to the importance of family. To cast western ideals on Japan does Japanese culture (as well as Asian culture) a grave dis-service.

As for Rakugo, it is a traditional means of comedic storytelling, unfortunately TV has pretty much killed it off as an art form (though they do broadcast rakugo, it pales compared to seeing it in person). I hope this animation proves good enough to spark a Rakugo boom in Japan, one of the great beauties of Japan is that this is distinctly possible.

This manga is trying to creat alternative world rather than depicting old ages. The world of "IF" just like Gintama, the rakugo are real but setting are not real world.

Never heard of rakugo before... I had a hard time getting into it. The main character is off putting to me, but everyone else is very enjoyable. I also didn't need that long of a first episode, I hope the next episode is shorter, I also hope I like the next episode a little more. But it wasn't a bad start.

I thought the author is depicting alternative 1990s with 1950s atmosphere。

Rewatched the episode since I fell asleep when I watched it last week.

Gotta say I'm really impressed with the VAing in this show since the seiyuu, more so than other anime, are the focal point of the series due to its focus on the cast being able to play other characters in rakugo performances.

Always been a big fan of Tomokazu Seki's work since he can be cast as characters like Yotaro while simultaneously can do characters like Kogame in Psycho Pass

It was pretty risky move to open a show with 50 minutes long first episode and showing the whole Yotaro's rakugo about light blue cotton lining. But it was works for me nonetheless. It was quite enjoyable.

I loved this, this will easily be my favorite show of the season if it keeps up, the show has a real heart behind it even in just this first episode and it made rakudo immensely entertaining, i genuinly was having a fun time watching yotaro do the burglar bit and got a couple laughs out of it. The drama feels a little weird in the sense of some scenes kind of happen then they dont get addressed until later but its something that didnt bother me too much.

Also i must mention how i didnt even realize this was 45 minutes long, well i mean i did take notice around the 35 minute mark but i was just enjoying it so much it didnt bother me one bit.

Pacing is smooth. Deen did a great job on atmosphere & setting, feels like a real Shouwa (a bit later actually 1991) period film.
Rakugo as a cultural heritage the 2 (or 3) are trying to preserve. Voice acting the focus of carrying & selling the whole rakugo events. Yotaro big delinquent kid voice quite fresh & not annoying. Don't like grumpy tsun jealous old men... I guess Yakumo's ok with the mystery backstory, and nice storyteller. Konatsu bad tempered with ded daddy issues, but not tsun in a tropey way, & shows her struggle with sexism & rakugo. Quite amazing seiyuus, looking forward to their interactions.
OP jazz & string bass quite enjoyable, contrasting with the shouwa/rakugo osts.

Wow! Really interesting, never really heard of rakugo before but it's definitely cool. Really enjoyed the performance of the thief story! Seems like we'll get to hear about the past as well next episode which I am really looking forward to. Seems like Konatsu's dad and him were good friends but the former died ... and the Master had something to do with it? D: Well anyway, I quite like the music (nice jazz music!) and the ED was quite good as well. The characters all feel very distinct to me as well. I hope the second episode is just as good! :O

Oh my gosh I love this!
First off, I really like rakugo and that's one of the main reasons I picked this up. I can seriously sit here and watch + listen to rakugo all day-- and I have before. Just storytelling in general really is something I enjoy.
Also, I'm becoming really interested in Showa era-related things.
AND SO, watching this really got me excited.

I had no idea this was like 45 minutes, so I was sitting there enjoying myself, and near the end of the episode, I thought, "Dang, a lot of stuff is going down in this 25 minute show, what's going on-- OH. It's been 45 minutes?!"
There's something really endearing about this anime; just straight up, good old fashioned story without all the things that's supposed to make you squee or whatever the heck. And our MC is someone I actually want to know about as opposed to someone we're just stuck with. It's some really good stuff. Now why the heck does this only have four pages of discussion while a bunch of other things have like eight pages? People really don't have faith in DEEN so they didn't bother trying it, eh? Or is it something else?

Not what I was expecting but i didn't look at what the anime was about before watching it. Te episode was really boring. But only because I wasn't ina mindset to watch such an anime and to top it of a 40 some minute episode... Ugh. Bad idea if you ask me. It wasn't terrible though. I'm going to put this series on hold because t isn't worth my time right now but I'll be back to it a few years down the road. If it going to be a heavy dialogue anime it has to be thought provoking or something not this. But this wasn't bad. Just not what I want to watch right now.

Absolutely lovely premiere. This single episode could've been a lone movie and it would've been great. I hope the succeeding episodes can keep up the quality of this one. And I also REALLY hope every episode is an hour long.

It also gave me an interest in rakugo!

I avoided this because of Studio Deen, but I've been hearing good things. First episode was pretty good. I really like Yotarou's character, and I'm interested to find out what happened to Sukeroku as the show goes on.

The flashback for the next episode looks like a lot of fun, as Sukeroku seems like quite a character.

EDIT: Wow, I just found out that Yotarou's seiyuu is Tomokazu Seki, and after looking as his roles, I would've never guessed. He has quite a range of voices!

I didn't notice it until I was watching it... 45+ of duration! I was questioning me if was really the first episode instead of a special, or a movie (Just like Wake up girls, the began with a introducoting movie and then the tv series.)

What an enjoyable beginning! I didn't realize this episode was so long until the end. I hadn't looked up the VAs prior to this, so it was a pleasant surprise to recognize the voices of Kobayashi Yuu and Seki Tomokazu :'D I like the build up and tension so far, and the soundtrack is sweet, esp that ending theme. I thought it was interesting they chose to show mc's feet movement during his performance as well as the focus on the sweat buildup. What a nice detail for the audience to infer things about mc's desperate passion for rakugo.

On the discussion thread of ERASED/Boku Dake ga Inai Machi, a lot of people are saying ERASED and Shouwa are anime of this season. I was curious of this anime, and I wonder how good it must be to be compared to ERASED, which IMO is one of the best anime I've watched in my life (so far). And so I watched the first episode of Shouwa today.

The first half was incredibly boring. Not much plot development, it's mostly character interactions, which doesn't interest me since I, for one, can't relate to these characters, and for two, their conversation was quite dull.

After a lot of pauses and doing other things, I finally got past halfway through the episode. That was when it finally became a bit more interesting. The thief story (rakugo?) the mc presented was very humorous, and I found myself captivated by this unique art of story-telling.

And then came the end. I didn't expect the mc to be expelled in the first episode! When he fell asleep, I knew something bad was gonna happen. And I was right; his snoring disrupted his master's presentation (LOLOL). And everything went downhill.

Overall, I'd say this first episode wasn't so bad. I did enjoyed it, but the fact that the single episode was over 40 minutes long and the first half was boring as hell, I gave this a 4/5. I like it.

Have just picked this one up. Like a few others I never planned to watch this but a lot of people seem to be loving it so here I am.
Not sure what to make of it yet. That was a fairly boring episode. Yota im not so sure about. I don't think I really know his character properly yet. Im hoping he gets a bit more interesting otherwise he's just a stupid guy that really like rakugo and idolises Yakumo but isn't bringing much else to the party. I'm not really rooting for him but then maybe im not supposed to be.
Konatsu is more interesting to me. I feel like she's the character that will be developing/changing a lot and adding some mystery and interesting plot to the series, along with Yakumo with the mysterious past.
I've got 4 more to catch up on so hopefully it gets a bit more interesting.
