Eu jurava que ia assistir uns 2 animu essa temporada. OLHA A MINHA LISTA. Enfim, mal posso esperar as aulas de nihongo para comentar. I'm counting on you.

Noticed you're watching Darker than Black S1. Hope you appreciate it, it has really good direction from start to finish which is rare in its action-genre.

I would probably advise not watching S2 and the OVAs although the OVAs are good. They introduce a new plotline but its like how people tell others to stop watching Death Note after L dies, it gets pretty bad.

Oh I actually had no idea Brazil had a Japanese colony, what the heck. Explains why there's randomly a lot of Brazilians on the site though. You can always resort to ripping the subs if its an mkv file but since its old its probably avi or some random filetype.

Hm, weird, if anything, I feel like the anime pacing is slow in the beginning as opposed to fast as it only starts to introduce character interactions through those first fourish episodes, and just spends most of the time getting the atmosphere together for the viewer. I presume you pretty much finished by now? Any thoughts?

Did you watch season 2 yet? Its the better of the two seasons imo, which is a rarity.

Yeah, I keep hearing good things about Shinsekai Yori but I've been too lazy. I'll get to it eventually its definitely on my PTW.

Yeah, I'm not sure why exactly Nodame left such a bitter taste in my mouth and I couldn't add the latter seasons as I'm not sure exactly how much I watched them before dropping so I just 5'd it for now. I'll probably go back to watch it if I get bored enough just to fix the ratings and list for it.

Oh :( getting good Portuguese subs must be pretty annoying. For old or relatively unknown series particularly it must be extremely hard to find Portuguese subs huh. Honey and Clover is pretty old so I would probably have no hope for it getting new subs, sadly.

No, I definitely agree. 5cm is not for everyone, and by nature appeals to a niche audience. I could understand why a person who doesn't appreciate good romance or isn't a romantic themselves would find the pacing awkward and boring.

Most elitists of this site gain their confidence through watching like a million different series, whether they be good or bad. I feel like MAL, including these elitists, overrate series on a whole (you can see this by how average series are often hovering around 7 rather than 5), but underrate works aimed at specific audiences because they watch for breath for their anime portfolio and not depth.

5cm in particular has a reputation that leads to its downfall because its not the best romance/drama relationships presented throughout the anime genre though it is praised as a good romance. Rather, it is depiction of a simple romance presented in one of the most deep and unmatched ways through the atmosphere and characters in anime that I've seen as of yet. That might sound a little bit cryptic and biased but its hard to put into words.

Honey and Clover has a similar great depiction of romantic struggles and dynamic characterization but riddled with comedic moments. If you're not planning to watch it yet because you dont want to ruin the experience with english subs, I can't really say any particular series with as good romance as the greats as we both have watched them.

If you're not particularly looking for romance but rather just a good series in general, Usagi Drop is a slice of life/Iyashikei genre anime whose atmosphere of such rivals that of Kimi ni Todoke but doesn't have romance. If you want drama, True Tears might be a hit for you. I have descriptions of both of them on me and my friend's elitist site here but obviously pay attention to the authors if you're looking for particularity for romance. I'm on the prowl myself for stuff so sorry that there's nothing good :P. I need to rewatch Bokura ga Ita to make sure I wasn't biased back then but there's that if you want to take a risk. Otherwise most of the romance stuff on your PTW list are 4-6's generally I feel.

I actually need to rewatch Nodame Catanbile but I haven't gotten around to wanting myself to do it. My memory is really hazy when it comes to it for some reason (probably due to just the sheer number of episodes and the fact that I didn't watch it all at once like I usually do) but if I remember correctly it killed itself due to trying to milk out as much episodes as possible where eventually I felt like it was just dragging itself along (I'm looking at you, Paris-hen chapter) although it had a strong start in the original season. It left a bitter taste in my mouth and I forgot to add a score so I just 5'd it for when I added it to my list because of the conflicting feelings I have towards it.

Yeah definitely a romance-sucker here :P it's essentially the only thing I watch anime for as I usually watch other movies/tv shows for comedy+fantasy+etc and I usually don't have enough time to spend following a ongoing shounen series for the amount of enjoyment I get out of them. I also can't get myself to watch the moe-ish slice of life genre no matter how many times I try (Lucky Star, K-on) for some reason.

I'm surprised you haven't watched Honey and Clover though. I think I'm a sucker for character monologues so I'm a bit prejudiced towards it and I might over-analyze it a bit to think it's a ten but the second season is definitely up there if you can get past the first few episodes where the directors don't know what they want Hagu to be (a cute moe character? loli appealing?) but they fix that pretty soon by a quarter in the first season iirc.

For 5cm per second, I feel like rather than dismissing it as melodrama they just flat out miss the point as if they were looking for something that wasn't there. Often, comments like "it was boring" or "MC should've worked harder to keep in contact" are frustrating because I feel like people miss the point. It's not a great work because it has the best plot in the world or because it provides some kind of form of emotional fulfillment from seeing characters act like they should. Rather, during the first arc, it envelops the viewer into a melancholy atmosphere so well and continues to throughout the movie with intricate pacing fitting of such in the presentation of a realistic tale of common first love and/or long distance relationships. The character monologues are also really strong imo as they express in pretty astoundingly beautiful words of things that go through people's minds when they think back to their own romantic lives.

Saw a few of your posts defending 5cm per second against some people who didn't like it.

As a fan, thanks a lot! It's disappointing for me when people pass it off as boring plot and scenary and such when I feel like its a great work for the heart of a romantic with its atmosphere.

We also have shockingly high compatibility :)

Hello there,

First off, thank you for sharing your story about your friend with me. I can only imagine the heartbreak you and those close to him must've gone through.

As for my review on AnoHana, well truth is that I've come to look at my anime reviews in general (and the AnoHana one in particular) as an old shame. You're certainly not the first person who called me out on my AnoHana review for being overly dismissive and shortsighted. I'm grateful that you (and others) took the time to share their stories with me.

It's mostly scale. Like if I'm rating an anime a seven, I have to be sure that it's better than all my sixes. Or if it's three, it has to be worse than all my fours.

Enjoyment sort of goes hand-in-hand with how much I appreciated an anime. Really, for anyone, there's always a reason why they enjoyed something or found themselves bored/frustrated. These emotions never appear out of thin air. If something was boring then it probably sucked on a critical level as well.
Veronin Oct 8, 2014 11:13 PM
My reasoning is that my list uses a pretty strict rating scale that not many people are used to, so applying that scale to my reviews would probably result in a lot of angry messages and people assuming I hate an anime when I actually liked it. Using the same rating scale as everyone else increases the chances of people actually reading what I said rather than getting mad at a number.
