Like with okaasan being that rather than okaa-san. We know that -san is an honorific but because it's a common word the hyphen is not used. It's the same reason why Shinsekai yori is that rather than Shin Sekai yori. Shinsekai 新世界 is found in the dictionary as its own word. |
| But they're two words? 新世界 is just shin + sekai (new + world). It's not really one word in this instance. With 女の子, I have always seen it romanised absolutely everywhere as onna no ko. Again, it's not really one word. It's onna + no (possessive) + ko. We romanise everything else with a "no" in it the same way, eg x no x. Not to mention that 女 (onna) is a word by itself anyway. You could also argue that that's not even consistent in the slightest, because by that definition 女子高生 should be "joshikousei" when romanised but MAL (mostly) has it as "joshi kousei". Also, dictionaries have phrases and idioms that are definitely more than one word. For example, 殺人事件 (satsuei jiken) comes up in the online dictionary I use as "murder case". Nowhere romanises it as "satsuseijiken". EDIT: There are actually no romanisation/title standards in the database guidelines, which is a kind of glaring omission. There really should be, because it would save a hell of a lot of hassle. But this also means that anyone who's argued "no but MAL romanises it this way because ______" isn't really true, since none of it is in the guidelines. |

They are compound words, like "railroad" in English. It is improper to write it as "rail road". Are they still understandable when split? Yes, but it's not grammatically correct to split them. And the same goes for these particular Japanese words because they're just railroads. Oba-san / おばさん is not a common word either. http://jisho.org/search/%E3%81%8A%E3%81%B0%E3%81%95%E3%82%93 Obaachan / おばあちゃん is a common word so the Doraemon entry should be corrected. http://jisho.org/search/%E3%81%8A%E3%81%B0%E3%81%82%E3%81%A1%E3%82%83%E3%82%93 Oji and Ojii are different おじさん (Ojisan - uncle) おぢいさん (Ojiisan - grandfather) Oba and Obaa are different おばさん (Oba - aunt) おばあさん (Obaa -grandmother) Those entries should remain the same. |

It is consistent with Kineta stating it being the standard. They are jukugo afterall so it makes sense. We’re here to make it known for Mod corrections. At one point MAL used to have a giga ton of English titles as the main title. And if I had a dollar for every time I saw and requested a missing “u” be added to a title due to macron mismatch be added I’d be a thousandaire. Anyway if you ask a Japanese person how many words are in 新世界より/shinsekai yori they would say 2 because it has two jukugo in the same manner if you asked an English man how many words are in “railroads rule” they’d say two as well. Same with 女の子/onnanoko they would say 1 word as it’s considered one jukugo even though it’s composed of 3 totally viable separate words. 危機一髪 as you listed should be split in two. But it’s not half, there are 3 wrong out of 10. MAL’s database is littered with things that need corrections, which is why we’re here in this 188 page/9k+ post thread. Quite a lot comes from MAL leeching AniDB’s database back in the day. You can see that AniDB has the same incorrect kiki’s as we do except for Hamatrou which is probably due to the movie/gekijouban naming differences so that would have been hand-done. I do not understand why you brought up Mahou Tsukai. As you said it’s not a common word so it’s written in two parts when romanized, that’s how it should be.
