Nanami is also great, her suffering under the weight of the expectations placed upon her to be special is very relatable and I could feel it. Who we are? Who we wanna be? Who people wants us to be? Society standards sometimes forces us to put on a mask to suit them. Everyone (or most) has their private self and their public one. It might have consequences and affect how we deal with happiness.
But yeah, the story felt incomplete so we should read the manga :)

Well, on Girl Friends, don't know. They thought they're het for some time, I think. I think Mariko started feeling for Akko around the end of the 1st vol. but was confused about it for long, like if she's gay or how those things are? and for some time after that, she still tried being het, but later realised that that's not her. Akko... well, don't remember when she started feeling for Mariko.

What came to my mind to your question here, and earlier too and thought to write to the 1st post, but changed my mind because of stuff like quoting someone on a forum without asking their consent. To Hanayome wa Motodanshi on comments on Dynasty, someone asked if it should be counted as yaoi, someone anwered this way:
"If we defined yaoi as "two or more people with penises getting it on", then, yes, we would. But identity is about people's minds, not their genitals, meaning this story is about a man and a woman, both of whom happen to have penises, so it's het."
So, I guess if we define things like this, I guess then when it's not Yuri by both body and soul so obviously Yuri, but on the borders, "Yuri by body only" is not Yuri, while "Yuri by soul only" is Yuri, like as I said in my opinion earlier too. I'm not completely sure but I think it's about how we should define.



I kinda see what you mean, but I think, gender identity and sexuality is two completely different thing. So, someone can have male or female body (or hermaphrodite), then identify as male, female, both, neither, etc., but it's unrelated from whether this person likes girls, boys, both, neither, doesn't cares about partner's gender as long as there is love, etc.

What you say, is about characters who weren't sure about their sexuality or something. Girl Friends came to my mind as for one. But in that, and similar stories, they do identify as girls. they're confused about their sexuality. they're not confused about their gender identity. (IMO)

As for point 2) you said whether it's temporary or permanent, and if permanent then you brought up that example (I don't know that show, but can imagine what you said) but then if it's so, I wouldn't necessarily qualify it before gender change as Yuri either, for example someone identify as a boy in that world (I mean, plans to be male in the future) then I'm not sure I would qualify it as Yuri, probably not.

Let me bring a crazy example XD Do you play Pokémon games? You know the Pokémon Azurill? (let's add here, let's imagine it in human form now, if we're going into things like gender, gender identity, etc. plus I'm not into that furry stuff) For some reason, Azurill's male/female ratio is 25:75 (75% is the female) but with Marill (the evolved form) it's 50:50. (This is probably a bug the creators overlooked, but a rather fascinating bug. I heard though they removed it from gen 6) This means that 1/3 of female Azurill change gender upon evolving. I thought that's just for the statistic, but no, they actually do so in game too. I caught two Azurills in Pokémon White 2 and one of them (the 1st one I caught) evolved like that. - But I don't that much like full, permanent gender change (when it's against the character's will, I just hate it. ok, if character wanted it, I guess I'm fine with it, and here the later is the case, but for some reason I just went with this instead), let's say "she" just grown some... umm... additional parts, but kept what had too. So, it's Futazu! XD Their gender change supposedly depends on personality value, I think, (but you can't see it), so from that, I would assume, the Pokémon "herself" wanted or not wanted to change and so did so, upon evolve. So I think that Azurill what grown additional parts upon evolving I think "she" wanted to do so since long, and probably identify something else than a girl even before evolving. Like some personality, like "I look like a girl now, but once I'll be bigger I'll be a futa." or something. From player's (trainer's) perspective, I had no idea if she will or will not change, looked like a girl (the other Azurill I caught kept her original gender), but this one changed upon evolving, and if that is based on personality value, I assume "she" wanted that. Plus they only evolve if their happiness is at max, guess is "she" wanted to be like that since little age, now that changed, and is as "she" always wanted to be, "she" must be very happy.
Nyahahaha, ok, this might was a crazy example, but I told so, didn't I? XD But hey, I think something like this too would worth a short story or manga.

So, what I mean, in case it's some race that is capable to change gender upon aging, and it's permanent, BUT since it's depends on the individuum's own choice to change or not, I guess the ones who change didn't identify as a girl before either (since if would, then they probably would feel completely comfortable in that girl body and don't want to change)
And if ship such a person, who is currently girl by body, but will change because want to change, because inside not feels like a girl, not identify as a girl, I'm not sure if we ship this person with a girl, if that qualify as Yuri... I'm not sure...

You said it about gender identity? But if so, that not necessarily changes... in cases like bigender, gender fluid, etc., then on a way, yes, I think, since then identify as male this time, female at another time, etc., but if for example a person, girl by body, identify as male, I don't see why that would change then? and then if he would love a girl, it might would be rather het, than Yuri.


On a side note: I see you plan to watch Wagaya no Oinari-sama? I assume I made you curious about it? I hope you'll like it. I really liked it. The show itself isn't perfect why I gave it a 8/10 (that's pretty good though), but the whole concept how Tenkou Kuugen is, that's just very-very-very interesting. I just loved that. It's kind of sad there aren't really any other anime like that. (I heard about one though, but not seen that yet, so don't know how that is like. Uchouten Kazoku if you're curious.)
If you want, we could talk about Wagaya no Oinarisama too. You also can ask about it if you're curious about something, but I don't want to spoil anything, so will not say anything for now, except if you would say it's ok to spoil it.

Ok, so I written this to that what you asked (but so then will not post it in that club, but rather here, but without rewrite. - I guess I could rewrite it if it's a talk between us instead a post in the club, but for now I'll just leave it like this.
