Synopsis

Ayaka Sakurai is an excellent student, but she gets nervous at exams, so she had to settle for a lesser high school than she expected. However, her teacher offered Ayaka a recommendation letter to the school of her choice if she could convince the delinquent girl Sora Honda to come to school. When Ayaka visited Sora at her home, Sora was quite willing to go back to school, if Ayaka would agree to do one thing...

Reading this yuri manga called Can’t Defy the Lonely Girl. So far, it is a cute read. It is about a high school girl named Ayaka Sakurai who gets anxious when taking exams. As such, she ended up going to a lesser high school. Then comes the teacher asking her to convince a delinquent girl to come to school. That girl, Sora Honda, agrees to come to school, but in return for “requests.” So it’s that kind of manga.

Ultimately speaking, I am enjoying reading the manga, but at the same time, it tragically falls into the same issues that works like Hino-San No Baka; Even If It Was Just Once, I Regret It; and Snake Woman and Offering-Chan where the relationships between the lead characters start off on shaky grounds. It’s not as bad as the other two, but still, it is somewhat hard to overlook. EIIWJO starts off with the landlady trying to elicit sex from her in return for paying her rent. Essentially quasi-prostitution. Snake Woman is literally about a young girl being made a slave for the eponymous snake woman, but I will relent that it was more akin to a sacrifice, but that nevertheless still has unfortunate implications. I don’t feel like I need to get into ones like Hino-San or Citrus as both of them had their own problems.

Sakurai is literally blackmailed into having to tend to each and every request Honda makes with the first one even being a surprise kiss. Sure all of their interactions are played as adorable, but it’s kind of hard to not acknowledge that this is only happening because Honda blackmailed Sakurai, kind of ruining the adorableness. I guess to me it plays off more as an obligation rather than an actual relationship.

The characters are pretty likable except for one. Sakurai is cute and dorky with how much she idolizes her older brother. She is also pretty awkward when around Honda particularly when she is unable to understand her feelings for her.

Honda comes off as unlikable and kind of a burden to Sakurai due to forcing her to do requests in return for her going to school. But as the manga continues, we learn more about her and slowly but surely, we do get to see the reason as to why she fell in love with Sakurai, to begin with.

The supporting characters are also fun. There’s Sakurai’s group of friends. Honami is the social butterfly who is really energetic. It’s also cute that she wears overalls and one of the straps are undone accentuating her Genki Girl tendencies. Chizuru Koike holds Sakurai in high regard due to her being their class president. Yuina Minami thus far doesn’t have a defining characteristic yet, but she’ll probably grow more as the series continues. Then there’s the teacher Ms. Egawa. She is probably the worst character in the manga. She is the one who forces Sakurai into a deal to bring Honda to school whilst dangling her letter of recommendation in her face. She seriously has no shame and has the habit of popping out of places.

The artwork is also pretty good. It emphasizes the cuteness quite well.

Otherwise, a good read, if you kind of look past the blackmail. If you like this work, then you would also love Hino-San No Baka because it also has a class press having to do another delinquent’s demands. For more ecchi works, I recommend I Like OPPAI Best In The World! due to its similar premise.

Lonely Girl ni Sakaraenai is a difficult one to pin down for me. The blackmail premise is spicy, but the pacing and tropey nature of some of the interactions kinda hamstring my enjoyment of it at the same time. Like, it's good enough, but it could've been great, and that's actually almost worse than it being mediocre.

See, I like it when GL works don't beat around the bush too much. It was my problem with Citrus, my problem with Bloom Into You, my problem with a lot of Korean works (Partition still keeps me awake at night), and why I love works like How Do We Relationship for not doing that. Now, I felt the blackmail premise was spicy enough to keep things slowburn for a while, so the pacing didn't initially bother me with Lonely Girl ni Sakaraenai, but as things progressed, it got slower and slower. Honestly, I'm worried at this point that if this manga ever gets to the point of them confessing, I'll be so frustrated from all the interruptions and plain fucking around that I won't care.

Some GL stories seem to have this weird issue where they feel the need to 'flesh out' the side characters by giving them a lot of panel time, yet never actually developing them in interesting ways. There's about three characters in this who I cannot remember the name of, or differentiate beyond basic appearance, and it kinda feels like any time they're on panel is dead air. Their reactions to the budding GL in their midst are pretty cute, and their attempts to wingman are fine, but good god do things feel slow at where the manga is up to so far, and their presence eating up panels often feels like it's only making that worse.

It's made bearable by the likeable main characters, who do genuinely care for one another, even if Sakurai really needs to get a clue, and Honda is too shy to actually spell it out to her. In another, better paced work, these two would probably be grappling with their inner demons together by now, and making out in broom closets, but it's entirely possible that the mangaka has no idea what to do with them once they hook up, and thus is intentionally dragging out the pre-relationship fluff/angst. Convenient interruptions are a trope I've come to despise, because it artificially drags out romantic arcs, often for little gain. My interest in said arcs comes from the process of character development, not dealing with a constant sense of 'if you would just fucking talk to each other for five goddamn minutes...' They're teenagers, so whatever, and it's still better so far than whatever the hell Citrus was doing in its middle volumes, so I can tolerate it for now.

Despite all this, I'd say I generally liked Lonely Girl ni Sakaraenai, even if I find it mildly frustrating. The art is cute and clean, and the characterization of the leads is handled pretty well for GL, particularly Honda's desperate loneliness, and Sakurai's difficulties with disappointing authority figures. When they interact, it's awkward and cute in the right general way for me, and when the story moves, it's genuinely fun to read, which showcases to me that it has potential. It's a little mediocre in places, a little frustrating in others, but generally a fun experience, in my opinion.
