What a twisted anime. Nothing happened but still there's something getting on my nerves. I totally can't predict what's going to happen next.

Drop it, if you're confused already there is no way in hell you're going to understand the later episodes.

Some of my thoughts..
Seems Chisa found a way to "connect" to the world more efficiently and no longer needed her body. I think her messages to the students were the messages with the opal-like background. Perhaps Chisa recognizes a similar ability in Lain, as she also seems introverted. Soon reality begins to blur with the hum of the Wired. Lain noticeably taps into it- when she was annoyed and communicated a message on the train to get the people to shut up, and is later pulled into it.
Lain's father emphasizes the "connection" the Wired brings and how it holds societies together.
Honestly, if you think of it in this perspective it isn't as twisted as it seems.

Hmm. I'm not sure what exactly to think just yet. A little weird, but I like that.
Maybe I'll be able to piece things together better as I go on.

Surprisingly the quality isn't as bad as I expected from a 1998 anime! Maybe it didn't bother me that much because the atmosphere was so good...
So was everything that happened in this episode actually just a dream/hallucination that Lain saw during the class? Or was did the action just change from the train to the classroom? If it was real, then the situation in her family is quite sad: mother who doesn't care about her daughter and father who is addicted to computers =/ Anyway, will most likely continue watching this, because I finally started after 3 years of planning :)

At first I thought it was interesting.
Then the more I thought about it, (when Chisa wrote 'God is here' and when Lain saw her in front of the train) the more creeped out I got...the more I had to finish watching this...

Lain has been one of those shows that I've known for a long time, but never got around to watching it. One of my friends from middle school had this on VHS and he was telling me how good it was. I just finished college and someone was telling me about some of their favorite anime and Lain popped up.

From what I've seen, this show is very interesting. Lain doesn't seem to talk much and we don't get to hear her thoughts a lot of the time while she just stares at what is happening around her. I kind of like that, it's almost as if we are experiencing what is happening before her personally as well since we don't get her insight on it.

I'm glad I gave this show a watch now. Should have watched this on VHS back in middle school lol.

Different from what I'm "used to".
Though I know not to judge it on the first episode.
I'll keep an open mind while watching this.

Somehow reminds me of Steins;Gate.

I've been meaning to watch this for a while now.
I'm a huge, HUGE fan of Haibane Renmei and Welcome to the NHK, so I'm hoping this won't disappoint.

So far, very mysterious and surreal. I can't wait for things to pan out. Morbid topics like suicide from the start gets me interested.

I could've sworn I never heard about this series until recently, and had a case of deja vu when I saw Lain in that bear suit. Then somehow I recalled a lost memory that I actually watched bits of this show like 10 years ago when it was airing on Tech TV. I'm feeling weird in more ways than one after this first episode...

So I've watched this first episode and i can only say that the definition of weird is now on a whole new level. But that's a good thing. This show was made in the 1998. And the art is pretty damn good for those times.

This show might be a good brain-polisher :P

I went into Lain expecting something strange, but this was way weirder than what I was prepared for. Creepy, too... Not sure if this is something I will like, but I am definitely intrigued. I can already see how this is going to be existentialism all over the place, thanks to the sole existence of the "Wired". Or it’ll just get way weirder, which is what’s probably going to happen. :D

I'm re-watching this, and I will be leaving what I think some things means in these chapters

This is the first episode, lain a shy girl suddenly start to feel something weird, she starts to notice the wired after getting a mail from the girl who suicide in the first scene. We don't know yet why did she commit suicide but its implied that she started to disconnect from the real world and wanted to stay in the wired ("I dont need to stay in a place like this").

Chisa also mentions something about a god which will be relevant in future chapters.

Lain start to get curious about the wired and ask her dad to buy her a new Navi, probably because the old one limit how much she can do to communicate with chisa.

Now comes the mindfucking scene that some people don't understand... Lain was in the train and suddenly the train stops, she sees blood in the wires outside and the scene change to the streets and then to another different scenarios where she usually walks home, she see what happened in the rails, there was a girl and watch her dying, after all that she wakes up in her classroom all sweaty and nervous. I think she never left the classroom but that wasn't a dream, she was connected to the wired and she was watching what happened to the girl in the rails.

after all that she sees chisa in her way home through the wired and that's the end of the episode..

Definitely intriguing. I like the deliberate intensity and slow stare/dazing/daydreaming of Lain. I can see she is contemplating life, and has been for sometime. It seems that the Wired has been looking for someone vulnerable, introverted, remote, and seemingly sophic like Lain.

Nice first episode, it threw the seeds of what will be deepened afterwards.
I like the sub-urban tone this anime has, even though for the first time I can't really get into an anime's art. I think it doesn't improve the atmosphere, it kinda turns me off.
That aside, I'm genuinely intrigued, I love experimental/symbolic/phylosophical stuff, and I have to say I can't wait for this to get heavier, because I know it will.

Did anyone notice that the title of the episode "Weird" is an anagram and can be rearranged for the word "Wired?" I wonder if they put that there intentionally or if the episode name just came from the description of Lain as she seems pretty "weird."

Damn, nice observation.
