This is the beginning of the anime classic Captain Harlock.

So humanity has been brainwashed into being obediant slaves and Harlock is fighting against it, all this while a thing is hurtling towards Eartg, very fascinating.

I can't wait to watch more.

Didn't really like it, it seemed as though it was to rushed and there was apparently some sort of closeness Harlock had with the child. I'll keep watching, though

I like the moment between Mayu and Harlock so cute.

Harlock is sexy and Kei is gorgeous.

Good opening, though I found the exposition voice over scenes more enjoyable than the bumbling military's attempts to apprehend Harlock. Nice soundtrack too.

Not the best first episode, but it was still a good start, interesting enough for me to look forward to the story.

Quite a cute first episode I must say, I expected something more action wise for a first introduction, but I really loved this subtle approach to show that even the fearest men of the galaxy can have a golden heart!

Let's see what kind of a story this series will offer us and what the next episode will show us!

Dat moment, when you realize that Toeis artwork back then was better than it is nowadays.

Hmm, the start didn't really impress, it was ok at best, but Harlock seems like he could turn out to be a great character.

I expected to enjoy this like I enjoy Go Nagai series like Mazinger, in a strange 70s surrealist anime way but I thought was genuinely great. Real emotion, great buildup and I love the setting with the decadent Earth being protected by the very man they view as their worst enemy, the rebel hero Harlock.

Easy 5/5 for me.

It's a decent first episode, but it didn't quite hook me. The animation and overall quality is okay, but there was a bit too much exposition and musical stuff going on for my taste. Which is okay for a first episode, I guess. Definitely not bad! I will have to watch another episode or two.

Found this anime by random on a streaming site, well they story is 80ish but good enough to enjoy a bit but music is pretty good and fits the atmosphere pretty well.

I love the look of this series. Old low-budget anime looks so much better than new low-budget anime. And you never see unusual art styles like Matsumotos these days- everything is just generic.

So far the setting and characters look interesting, but I feel they tried to cram a lot into this first episode. It felt a little like they were setting out a ham and cheese platter with half a slice of everything they had to offer. Hopefully it's just an attempt to get past the set up of the setting and characters quicker. Harlock also felt a little too aloof/distant, though that may be a result from me needing to get used to the animation style...

A friend of mine recommended this because it's one of their favorites so I'm very excited to see where this goes.

Already I see some of the same themes as in Galaxy Express 999. Harlock seems like an interesting character. Previously I've seen some cameos of him in other Leiji Matsumoto works, but he had a tendency not to talk, maybe they couldn't get the voice actor. And even here he doesn't seem like a talkative type, just the cool space pirate looking into the distance. I'm somewhat interested after the first episode, mostly because there's the Leijiverse style, even when the settings are a bit different.

The music is what really makes this series. The art, animation, story, and characters can age but that music has stayed fresh till this day.

Animation is pretty good for Toei standards. Soundtrack is also very nice, but I don't feel much else about the series yet. Guess I kinda walked into that sort of experience (Space is something I just don't like, don't ask me why), but maybe I may like this anime soon enough.

I'm on a 70s anime binge, and was looking for something to watch after Space Battleship Yamato 1 & 2. Looks like this'll scratch that itch. Love that Leiji Matsumoto art style. Love the ship designs. And the premise is really cool.

In spite of it being relatively light on action, I thought this was a great first episode. Can't wait to see more.

I saw this in English when I was a kid... Back in the 80's. Not sure if it will hold up, the manga does not seem too.

Code Geass the beta version.

Herlock is the original emo from the times before it was cool.

He reminds me of both Lelouch and Capitan Blood from Odyssey of Capitan Blood.

I am not sure if I can fully support his cause though, the way it was described is dubious and ambiguous. That leaves a lot of room for interpretation.

His dislike for brandy and diamonds is also strange, especially since he has booze in his cabin.

Miime kind of like CC I think.

It is just first episode but I can already see how much this influenced so many other anime out there.

After all these years, I've finally decided to watch this series. Up to now, the "Arcadia of My Youth" movie had been my only exposure to Harlock when I saw it back in the 90s, along with the GE999 movie that I saw a decade ago.

So far, this looks promising.

I watched Gun Frontier when i was a kid, and a couple of months ago Queen Emmeraldas. Time to see where it all begins.
