While this was a touching episode for certain, and I cried a little (it's difficult not to. every. single. episode.), I feel nonetheless that this was the weakest episode of the show so far. It's like the series was constantly going up and up with its themes, drama and direction, but this episode was completely out of this sequence. For me, it didn't add to Yuzu's character more than we already know about her.
And the ominous email from the last episode proved to be a trolling, essentially.

This is likely unpopular opinion, the episode seems to get overwhelmingly positive reactions, so I wonder, why did I perceive it the way I did...

With three episodes left, I'm sure they don't have the time to conclude Shirase's arc dramatically enough, in the sense of directing, so unfortunately it will be either a really weak ending (which would be devastating considering how strong the series was overall) or "to be continued" ending with the hope for the second season (I'm all for it).

not very unpopular since i too didn't enjoy the episode as much as the others, but i don't think i have a reason why i didn't like it much, i mean i think it was to have episode about yuzuki, and the episode focused more on (what's the meaning of friendship) than on her, also the email isn't really a troll since all of the episode was built on it, the reason yuzuki was upset is because with the drama she won't have time to hang out with hwr friends

I am satisfied with the episode. I do not find it superfluous to talk about a topic that has had its repercussions on the protagonists, making them grow and closing the question in a perfect way, leaving nothing pending. Each character reacts in his own way and they are still little girls, I do not see any mistake if one of them can cry. Overall, the episode was a lot of fun and enjoyable to follow.

I'm a little bit on the negative side this week, like some have said. With this show I always have high standards, so to say that I didn't enjoy this episode as much isn't that much of a criticism, but in this case I think it has been my second least favorite of the season (my least favorite is episode 1). And yeah, still at the very least a low 4/5 and etc.

My problem with the episode is not specifically the conflict, but the timing. It feels off. I mean, they just arrived to the Antarctica, they are discovering the environment... and yet, somehow thanks to Yuzuki's plot, there is not enough of a tangible sense of discovery in it. I understand that Yuzu has these issues, but it's the focus of the narrative what went a little wrong because the whole arrival of the girls to this new place felt bland, and they didn't capture what was so special about it. After all, the series is built around the idea of adventure and discovery, and yes, friendship and ties are extremely relevant but so are the former and this time they weren't successfully transmitted.

I have some other minor issues, though. While Yuzuki's conflict was fine and it brought a tearjerking conclusion (as usual with this show xD), I feel that it didn't fully capture the group dynamics other personal conflicts have. Like, it was way too focused on the specific relationship between Yuzuki and Kimari, and both Hinata and Shirase felt like companions, like they were just there. On the other hand the visuals were kinda... off. Like I saw some creative camera angles here and there but I didn't perceive a strong communicative effect in them and they felt sort of irrelevant. Due to how well the show usually performs in this, I was surprised by how ineffective the framing was at conveying something by itself. Probably a side effect of not feeling the overall emotions of the episode too much due to other circumstances though.

Even though I loved the episode, I had a similar feeling. Somehow, the end of the previous episode felt much more powerful than now that they've actually arrived at their destination. Even so, I think there is a beautiful significance in Yuzu celebrating her first birthday with friends here, in the place that united them on this common dream.

Absolutely agreed (with the significance of Yuzu's birthday as well, of course, the show got me teary-eyed AGAIN). Last episode, and its conclusion, were really something. And I think it made a better job than this one at tying the emotional conflict with the adventurous mood, they actually felt part of the same narrative continuum and it was wonderful. This, along with some further focus on the environment, is what I think I missed here.

Another good episode... must have been really a sad life for Yuzuki-chan... so this is the first time friends celebrated her birthday. Nice to see that she really is happy when seeing the cake they made for her. No need for the "friendship contract" because they are already friends. ^^

not as good as the last ep. ....which wasn't as good as the last ep. BUT that did follow the best episode of the show (imo). Of course, I'm not really a big fan of the "define our friendship" episodes so a lot of this ep. was kinda boring. I'm really hoping the show sticks the landing. If it does then these last couple episodes will be forgiven.

and its not like I think that these last two eps. were bad. It's just that, for me, ep. 8 is the best in the series. Before that ep. 7 was the best. And before that ep. 6 was the best. and etc. So for these last two eps. to not be the next best in the series means they're kinda disappoint..... for me.

Meh episode. Again, the cliffhanger turned out to be rather trivial and pointless.

I mean, it's good to have the episode dedicated to one character (Yuzuki this time) but when it turns out she's is just pampered crybaby craving for an attention I don't know how to symphatize with her anymore. In fact, (and they even made some jokes about her behind her back) she's type of the person that would be constantly getting on your nerves. Somehow I don't think she belongs to Antarctica. She's still just a child in the end, and pretty naive. At least they could give her only half of an episode and leave the rest for others, but even that most of other interactions (Mari's instant crying for example) didn't make a lot sense either.

I think the episode showed well how girls can gossip about each other (and still think they made her a cake with those words only as act of pity) but at the same time it felt like wasted on inconsequential things when there are only three episodes left.

Well... this series would probably end without any conclusions anyway (season 2 hint at best) so it doesn't matter anyway but at least they could let them make more meaningful interactions with the crew (and not just comedy reliefs).

It's a good thing Yuzu's my favorite. Because her character can be so frustrating sometimes. I rarely find this show cringe. At least not to an unpleasant extent. But I was watching the "friendship contract" scene through my fingers. Still it all came together with a great conclusion. For yet another fantastic episode.

My one complaint with this episode. Is how it makes it seem like Kimari is mad at Yuzu. Or upset with her or something. While we wait for the other shoe to inevitably and obviously drop. But it didn't last long and wasn't done in a super boring cliche ridden way. So pretty forgivable.

They've done a good job making Yuzu an empathetic character. Considering her life and experiences are so far beyond. Anything the average viewer can relate to. And I love her and Kimari's relationship so much. As the one who understands friendship the least and the one who understands it the most. I imagine we're going to get an episode focused on each girl. Until the finale where Shirase finally reconciles with her mother's death. I'm not ready for the show to end. But I'm definitely ready to see how it does it.

I don't like this episode. Yuzuki had her own episode before and now we have a random conflict. Shirasa and Hinata feels more like side characters in this episode.

The girls and crew hard are at work getting the station into tip top shape. This was a very well done bonding and 'world buildingish' ep I found the Friendship ponderings done well and the birthday bit to be quite touching. Another well done ep of Yorimoi. Great series so far; I wonder how they will conclude it. But sheesh hard to believe we are 10 eps into this series.

Happy birthday to our friend yuzu - simple yet very touching ^^

-it took like 10 episodes but they finally got there
-i knew it, santa is real
-i don't exactly know why but this whole tour of the station seems like the intro to a danganronpa chapter
-i don't exactly know why but mari's sleeptalking was hilarious to me
-ah yes this is more of how i expected the show to be
-mmmm, while the situation reads vanilla adventure comedy to me right now, that email to yuzuki about passing the audition comes off as pretty death flaggy
-FeelsYuzuMan
-also i must have missed something because i thought that entie yuzu scene was a flashback
-i never really noticed it until now but the outpost looks super cozy
-something seems off about the pacing because this episode somehow feels super jumpy
-alright, that one moment where hinata and yuzuki are standing in front of the chicken just seems super ominously foreshadowing a stabbing

-alright yuzuki you can stop dropping these death flags now
-yeah that outburst from mari just seemed like it was missing dialogue
-👌
-alright i actually liked the little megumi sub-arc when it aired but this episode makes it feel pretty important
-oh
-everything fucking makes sense now
-i knew something was off about all the dialogue before, but it fucking makes sense now
-it's because everyone from the main crew were intentionally hiding everything from yuzuki and the viewers
-i guess all the stuff involving them making birthday preparations for yuzuki was pretty danganronpa-esque

So, it's like 10 episodes in, the main girls have finally reached Antarctica, and they're still dropping evidence that the show can either go the vanilla route or down the bad end route. Like sure, all the Yuzuki stuff this episode was all warm, fuzzy, and super indicative of just a straight up CGDCT in Antarctica. However, the fact that they hid the entire birthday behind foreshadowing and only left any indicators of such as cryptic hints to the viewers also suggests that maybe the death flags that were being dropped in the previous episodes weren't too unfounded in reality. Like, I initially thought that they skipped some dialogue earlier in the episode but it all ended up being actually significant to the general narrative. That pretty much signifies that anything they put in the show has at least some importance behind it.

Possible endings aside, one thing that I really liked about this episode was how they made the whole Megumi thing relevant again out of nowhere. I just thought it fit super well with the whole sense of adventure theme that's going on in the show because adventure's the kind of thing that just keeps going and really doesn't have an ending. I also happened to like the resolution of the Megumi arc, so giving it the added significance of resolving Yuzuki's little character arc in this episode just made me like it more. Furthermore, Yuzuki's arc also had within it some secondary character development with pretty much all of the main girls in some capacity, but most obviously with Mari.

Lol so you want her arc unfinished then? Much more leave her ignorant about the meaning of 'friends'?
Inb4 you'll complain she wasn't that fleshed out if this episode never happened.

On one hand, Yuzuki finding out more about friendship is nice, but on the other, this came at a very wrong time. Just when they have finally arrived at the much mentioned Antarctica and when we should be learning more about the station and such :/ The adventure and special aspect of it was lacking, is what I'm trying to say. I think this part of her development could have easily been done on the ship instead.

This episode hit very close to home for me, whenever I would meet with another person I could never tell myself that we're friends. I could never understand how other people called themselve's friends and always thought that those that were close to me didn't want to be friends, they never even asked of it, right? Nowadays I'm aware that friendship doesn't make sense, and it doesn't have to. I believe friends know exactly when they're friends and when they are not and that's what seems to count, although I still have this akward feeling of doubt when I use the word friend to refer to them right next to me, I'm glad to have just those few I can call friends anyways :D

Oh God, this was adorable. Yuzuki was the real MVP this episode.

Strangely, and I write this with reservation, I can kind of relate to how she feels and how she interprets (or, maybe, fails to interpret) friendships in this episode. Friendship, what does that even mean? Pepega
