What is your favorite anime adapting? How familiar are you with this, I mean, have you read the original manga or LN, played the game or bought the related content if it's a multimedia franchise? If your favorite anime was an original, have you read/played other adaptations of your favorite show? If you have a favorite game or manga/LN but the anime didn't become your favorite for some reason, you can mention that as well, explaining why.

It’s adapted from a visual novel, and I’ve played it.

Well, mostly it depends what is the original source of the anime (manga, ln, vn/other type of game...)... yet pretty often I don't pay attention to original source unless I seen that first or became obsessed with series...

I've read all of the Legend of the Galactic Heroes novels.

I really wanted an anime adaptation of two of my favorite DS games: The World Ends With You and Ace Attorney but both anime adaptations ended up being mediocre to say the least, especially for TWEWY.

Go with my Top 5 as examples:

Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen ---> Pretty faithful to the manga arc from Rurouni Kenshin it adapts, though removes all the humorous scenes from exploring Kenshin's backstory to maintain a more serious mood for the whole series.

Kiki's Delivery Service ---> I understand it's based on a children's novel that focuses more on individual stories involving Kiki instead of a slice-of-life, coming-of-age story as the film does.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes ---> Just know it's adapted from an expansive novel series. But how far it's faithful, I'm not sure of.

Serial Experiments Lain --->An original series not based on any ongoing source material.

Monster ---> Outside of a few minor details, the anime is extremely close in faithfully adapting the manga panel to panel.

Regarding my top 2 anime, I read the manga from where the anime left off. I still haven't read the adapted chapters because the anime are so good and I rewatched them instead.

Not familiar at all. I've only read one Masamune Shirow manga which isn't even 100% his (more like 30%) but I've watched all anime based on his works and I consider 1995's Ghost in the Shell to be my favorite anime.

My favorite is JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, which was adapted from a manga. I read parts 6-8, I've read most of the spin-off manga, I've played through Eyes of Heaven, and I'm caught up on part 9. There's still one spin-off manga that I haven't read (Dead Man's Questions), a bunch of spin-off light novels (Purple Haze Feedback, the two GioGio's Bizarre Adventure novels, and Over Heaven), and I haven't read any of the parts that had already been adapted when I had started watching the anime (parts 1-5)

I'm making my way through reading the original source material for some of my favorite anime, caught up to Kaiji, Terra Formars (except for the untranslated chapters), the original novel for Welcome to the NHK (probably won't read the manga), and started reading the High Score Girl and Grand Blue manga. Idk about Higurashi, I've had a VN chapter on my Steam for a while but haven't touched it, don't know if I'm better off reading the manga adaptation. Don't think I have an original work on my favorites (Babylon is based on a novel).

One of my favorite anime is Prison School but it doesn't show up in my MAL favorites section as well as Legendary Gambler Tetsuya (ongoing scanlation), they do appear in my favorite manga because the content after the anime is great/of comparable quality to what the anime adapted.

My two favorite anime are Higurashi and Monogatari, the source material is a Visual Novel and Light Novel respectfully, haven't read the original source material for either, but I've read the manga for Higurashi, which in my opinion is better than the anime, and I've been meaning to read the Bakemonogatari manga cause I've heard it's different from the anime, also been meaning to read the Light Novels that haven't been adapted into anime yet, so Off Season and Monster Season, I have the books for them but just never get around to reading them

I've read the source for 4 of my ten favorite anime. Although the anime is the source for 2 of them. Clannad, Little Busters and Steins Gate are actually the only VNs I've ever read. The VNs add some depth to certain characters that kinda get glossed over, but I still much prefer the anime versions. VNs tend to be a bit too long imo and the stories often go off into weird, unnecessary tangents. Some of the chapters are an absolute chore to read through but it's a requirement for unlocking all the content.

If it's a light novel , then that's all I know..

If it's a video game, I don't even wanna know..

To be honest, I'm not completely sure. When I researched into Anohana, I found some links referencing a manga series but I don't think it ever got an English translation. I'm not sure if it was one of those situations where they made the manga after the anime to piggyback off of the anime's success because the manga is cited as becoming serialized in 2012 while the anime released in 2011
Although, I know there are times when an anime is adapted from the first volume of a manga and then said manga becomes serialized after the anime airs... hrm

I've read the manga. At one point I was fully caught up to the manga, but now... I don't even remember where I left off as I didn't log it! I just haven't felt like playing 'guess the chapter' to figure out where I left off. I think it was in the 80 chapter range, but I'm not 100% sure.

I don't really read that much. I only sad if my favorites which have still plenty much materials from main source don't get S2 yet.

Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash and So I'm A Spider So What. Both main sources are so amazing and precious that I want them to get adapted with better quality than first season. I don't have expect them to be so high.

I mean, I read the entirety of the steins;gate visual novel, despite the fact that I never really read visual novels.

the only other ones I have read are ddlc, which I watched on youtube since it BLEW UP and was super short, and 13 sentinals, which is arguably not even a visual novel.

I thought it was a pretty big step down from the anime tbh. it has a lot more problems, it has a smaller soundtrack despite being longer, in terms of game play, the way you have to get the true ending is terrible game design, and without animation it just doesn't have the same impact.

but I would still call it worth it. just having more scenes to spend time with the characters that I fell in love with was more than enough. I have the game for steins;gate 0 too, I just have to find the right time to play it.

I do wish the visual novel had the dub too though, say what you want, but despite the fact that the japanese cast for sg is basically perfect, the dub is so good that I prefer it despite of that.

From my favorite which is Bleach, quite well. At similar level as the animated adaptation including some differences and changes which has appeared from the Studio, even lastly when Flame of Rebirth made a video on Hell Chapter retake there was a question about time difference [in anime it is shown twice] in manga once, once without time difference [anime has changed it for themeselves] and once with time difference but not yet animated, so sometimes I know some scenes with crazy details.

I read all the core arcs of the Higurashi VN, plus a few others.

As much as I think the novels are masterpieces, reading them actually made me even more impressed with the anime version. It did a great job of trimming the fat, whilst still keeping a ton of important plot details. I never felt like I was watching a gutted version of the story, it stands very well all on its own. The character designs and music adds a lot to it too. S1 and S2 have their own style and atmosphere that reflects the story really well.

I have the light novel and the manga for these series.

Adachi to Shimamura - Bought and started reading after the anime
The Eminence in Shadow - Bought and started reading before the anime
Mushoku Tensei - Bought and started reading before the anime
Overlord - Bought and started reading before the anime
Sentouin, hakenshimasu - Bought and started reading before the anime

The joy after knowing that they'll adapt the series you're reading is great but horrifying not knowing if they butcher it. But so far it has been good.

Not yet made to anime though, which I'd really want to see is: Loner life in another word. I have the light novel and manga on that too. :)

@RobertBobert I love to say modern anime is trash to trigger people here, but it's not exactly true. KlK, Cyberpunk, P&S, Darling in the Franxx (I'm not joking), Ping Pong, Aku no Hana, I'm not going to make an exhaustive list because it'd be way too long. Same goes for manga. A few people make good stuff, but most of it I wouldn't touch with a stick. Just like oldies tbh (^:

I just find it logical that anime original would be better suited for the medium. No way KlK or FLCL would have been made in manga form for example (I know it got an adaptation later).

Well, I don't know about it now, but 2-3 years ago it was believed that original shows are often better because they have a more grounded and objective ending and that they often have better pacing due to the need to draw the reader in without the original.

I try to buy the original work (whether manga or light novel) of an anime I really really loved whenever that is available in english (and/or not too expensive), and in fact looking at my list of 10s animes: I have 5 animes rated 10, I bought the original work for two of them, didn't for two other (for one of them because it's a long-lived manga and as such too expensive, for the other I plan too, eventually), and the last one didn't get translated in english.

I've read the Visual Novel multiple times already, all the routes, all the chapters, and re-watched the anime a lot of times as well. So I guess I'm pretty much an expert in White Album 2.
