The Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Ressha-hen (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Mugen Train) film surpassed Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (Spirited Away) in total Japanese box office revenue this weekend to become the highest-grossing film in the country's history. It grossed roughly 1.312 billion yen (approx. US$12.67 million) last week—a week that included its MX4D and 4DX premieres on December 26—for a cumulative total exceeding 32.47 billion yen (approx. US$313.5 million) from over 24 million tickets sold.

The film premiered on October 16 and had a historic start to its theatrical run, setting a box office record in Japan for a film's first ten days, and totalling 23.35 billion yen (approx. US$225.4 million) in revenue through its first 30 days. The total made it the fifth-highest grossing film ever in Japan as of November 16, and by November 30 it trailed only Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi among Japan's highest-grossing films.

Oricon reported on December 14 that it exceeded 30 billion yen (approx. US$289.6 million) in box office revenue following showings the previous week, joining Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi as the only films to do so in Japan. The next day, distributor Toho revealed an additional 880 million yen (approx. US$8.5 million) in sales for the latter linked to screenings held in 2020, pushing its total to 31.68 billion yen (approx. US$305.9 million) and briefly delaying Kimetsu no Yaiba's bid for the top spot.

ufotable's Kimetsu no Yaiba film adapts Mugen Ressha-hen (Infinity Train arc) from Koyoharu Gotouge's supernatural action manga. The film continues the story from the television anime adaptation that aired for two cours from April to September in 2019. Serialization of the manga concluded in May after a four-year run in Weekly Shounen Jump, and the 23rd and final compiled volume shipped on December 4. The manga has a cumulative 120 million copies of its volumes in circulation.

The franchise is being considered a social phenomenon in Japan, and Dai-ichi Life Research Institute Inc. estimated that its economic impact had exceeded 270 billion yen (approx. US$2.606 billion) as of December 5. Cinema Cafe analyzed tweets related to Kimetsu no Yaiba dating back to 2018, and found that the more than 15 million tweets in 2020 were not only 47 times the figure for 2018, but also more than double the cumulative total for the Haikyuu!!, Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academia), Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and Yakusoku no Neverland (The Promised Neverland) series in 2020. The number of Kimetsu no Yaiba tweets in the month following the film's release was roughly 3.7 times the number sent in the month prior, and the total for the two months exceeded the number sent in all of 2019.

It's crazy that a film that serves as a sequel to an anime series accomplished this! It has a way bigger barrier to entry than an original film like Spirited Away. (Though I guess it also has a built-in fandom)

@Xenocrisi 23.50 million was old number. There was Spirited Away screening on 2020. Made new admission number for SA which is 24.28 million. KnY until last weekend is still 24.05 Million.

Don’t do me like that. I deleted the reply cause I saw the numbers were wrong and was still looking at the old ones by mistake 😭

I haven't watched the movie yet but I'm gonna say, well deserved. One of the best shounens to come out from last year. Hope ufotable stays with this project and makes a 2nd Season. I'm pretty sure they will though, no doubt about it.

That's the plan. Making it so digestible even your 4 years old brother can watch it and understand the cookie cutter intrigue. If a franchise gets too much thematic density, it's lost on casuals. And since casuals know shit about the History of the medium, they overhype it like it's as fantastical as the second coming of Christ...

If anything the ad populum argument is the most terrible one you could argue about in favor of your thing. Remember, 50 shades of Grey and the Twilight saga, these shitty young adult novels, were smashing best sellers, too.

Okay, and? I never said it's not popular or that it's not a good plan to write mediocre garbage to sell more. This just proves that not just popularity != quality, but that popular = bad most of the time.

But this doesn´t affect or benefit anyone. Like literally, besides Ufotable the only success we are getting from this is to know there is a huge hit in japan and that´s it, unless you are one of those idiots whose stroke their egos by having their favorite anime in the top score, like you need to prove to everyone else that your favorite anime is better because other people agree with you.
That´s as stupid as the console wars.
---------------------------------------------------------

Well, I hope they adapt everything now, including the awful ending, since some of the best fights are in one of the latest arcs in the series. But yeah, japan is obsessed with this series. I can´t see why, but glad they are enjoying it.

Say what you like about this series, no one can deny the impact it's had and, obviously, is still having. Personally, I think the entire storyline of KnY had more depth than anything ever written by Twilight, and the animation was one of the best I've seen this year.

Don't blame the masses; it was simply an awesome movie that followed an equally phenomenal series (which is rare in anime).

9/10 - IMO.

"I think I wanted to attack something. Like betraying people or hurting people. And, well, it's not exactly nice, but hurting the readers too... In all honestly, I feel that's what I really wanted to do. For me, as a reader, when I think, "this manga will remain in my heart," it means, for example, it phenomenally hurt me: It's those kinds of experiences I'm after." - Pajime Hisayama (My favourite hurting author).

Apparently, the millions of fanboys fawning over Generic Slayer because of its pretty colors do.

Nobody will make me swallow they go flock in the theaters because of the top tier writing. I don't even see what's so artfully particular about this franchise. All I see is that a lot of people are easy to impress these days.
