You can seriously understand where Kakeru is coming from, but despite his overwhelming fitness and quickness in track, he's been nothing but a negative influence on the team. Despite yelling at them for not aiming hard enough at qualifying for the Ekiden, I still think he doesn't believe they can make it.

This is why despite Haiji being able to have an official record, you can almost always see him running alongside a slower member. He knows going all out in training will not improve the team as a whole.
If your favourite character is Tsutsukakushi Tsukiko, you are my soul mate.

Been a long time since I've been here, I'll continue expressing myself freely and believe everyone should too.

Show just feels slow and laborious a times, nice to see some emotion at the end though.

Thanks for the Ashita No Joe spoiler. Alright, I'd already been spoiled on it before, but that's still annoying.

They made me a fucking Ashita No Joe spoiler.
PRINCE, YOU SON OF A BITCH.

I mean, 50 years I'd say is a good breadth before spoilers. Though I just finished reading the manga like a week ago.
The whole idea of a statute of limitations on spoilers has always bugged me. I mean is it my fault for not watching it when it came out decades before I was born? It's not like I have the time to immediately watch everything that interests me either. I mean it's not that hard to reference works without dropping spoilers, or at least the real big ones. Anyway apologies if this came off like I was attacking you, just had to rant a bit on something that annoys me. That said I'll admit hypocrisy in that it probably wouldn't have bothered me if I already watched it.

Lol, not that this scene would have had a significant impact on the viewing experience anyway.

Man, I can't wait for Kakeru to finally have his big development moment so that he can finally move forward and stop being such a dick to everyone.
They're each showing signs of interest and improving in their owns ways, but of course it's never enough for him. I agree that they need a push to keep moving forward... however positive reinforcement and showing an actual interest in them improving >>>>>>> being a toxic person that just says "run more because you're slow".

I was giving Kakeru the benefit of the doubt before now, but he was a real jerk this episode.
Also I bet Haiji was obsessed with speed and overworked himself in the past and thats how his knee got screwed up and thats why he's so upset with Kakeru's obsession with speed OOF
Such a dramatic episode. I'm excited for the next~

Yeah, I've predicted that Kakeru will become like that, because of that challenge fron the champion, it's not a pure challenge though...I think Kakeru just want to give the best but yeah he forgot one most important thing, it is teamwork...first time watch Haiji is really angry, but I agree with Haiji, it's not only about speed and Kakeru, please don't be so rude to Hana, she's doing her best too. Never judge any people that they didn't give their best just because you're better than them, you can really hurt them.

I'm intrigued to see what Kakeru's relationship with everyone on the team will look like by like episode 20. Even more so, his relationship with Haiji

Don't get me wrong, I'd have been bugged by that spoiler if I hadn't already read that far. But I understand that Ashita no Joe is a cultural icon, at least in the world of manga, and that people and anime will inevitably reference important parts from the story. Like when they talk about Joe in Bakuman and Mashiro talks about the ending of the series, which is very famous. I knew the ending coming in and that may have ruined some of the experience, but I also got to read the series all at once while the readers back then had to wait weeks for a new chapter. So while it's not your fault that you didn't read it when it came out, I think you can agree that potential spoilers and reading all at once is better than waiting years (or decades) for a story to go from start to finish with no spoilers. I know I would take some spoilers to read all of Berserk at once, rather than wait the 200+ years it still has left to finish.

Oh yeah, I get the cultural icon thing. It's just that it's a bit sad since as a result a lot of people won't get the intended first experience. Plus I think it can cause a lot of people to get disinterested in work, since they'll figure why bother when they already know the ending.

Yeah, guess that's the privilege of those who were with it from the beginning. But at the same time you will always miss the conversations and hype from when it originally started, so even if you're not spoiled you still miss out on that experience.

I suppose so, if that's what you want to get out of it. Although you could still get some hype from starting something new, but like you said, with the added benefit of not having to wait for next week or whenever. You could try and find some people to join you too.

Damn, this was some heavy episode!

Tensions running high in the team now. Kakeru just can not get over his obsession with gaining speed and this is clearly causing a lot of issues for the team now.

What was with that thoughtless and immature remark at the end regarding Prince’s struggles? Bloody hell, that was really low of him to call all the other half-assed just because they aren’t as fast as him. I understand his point of view too, the competitive world really is harsh and unforgiving but his way of dealing things here is really not the best way to tackle around this obstacle. I’m glad Haiji snapped out there and gave him an earful, he was seriously asking for it for the last couple or so episodes.

All in all, a pretty good episode. Taking a break from this show for 4-5 weeks and now returning back has helped me enjoy this show a lot more, as I’m at the moment binging the remaining episodes as we speak. I just couldn’t handle Haiji’s persistence and Kakeru’s obsession earlier, but oddly enough I’m not having too much problem with Haiji anymore. It’s nice too see everyone slowly coming to like running and find their own respective goals, seeing King’s condition in particular where he was favoured for potentially coming to run the Hakuden someday. Kakeru has gotten worse, but I’m sure the next episode or two will resolve this issue before it gets out of hand.

The narrative gives me a little surprise: I thought I saw Nico's character in difficulty, but his story was intertwined with that of Kakeru, dragging that of Ouji and Yuki is more and more of the game now. Pleasant to follow the story and how pressured Kakeru is going crazy, and being seriously involved in Haiji's goal of winning the race.

First of all, I'm glad that prince even got motivated to buy a treadmill and I'm glad Shindo provided him one but damn it Kakeru. What's his deal? I'm glad that Haiji confronted him but Kakeru telling off Prince is disappointing. Kakeru needs to calm down and get his grip. Come on Haiji knock some sense over Kakeru

That massive Joe spoiler lmao, I already watched it before this series (one of the best sports anime out there IMO, watch it mates!) But I would be so pissed off if I hadn't, seeing Prince getting so fired up about it made me so happy tho, true fan.

Aaaand Kakeru had to say it. I'm very sure that people in his previous time didn't only dislike him for the results, thinking that everyone is doing this "half-assed" is offensive, they are all trying so hard. Very worried for Nico-senpai in special who is putting his health at risk.

I hope Hirata is okay and doesn't push himself too much to the point he collapses.

I was wondering when we'd get some more character development for Kakeru. From this episode I gathered he is a fvckin d1ck kdjkfs why would you say that to Prince?? He's trying his hardest and you're just too ignorant and close-minded to see his efforts. I hope Kakeru develops into a more likable character as the anime goes because so far he's my least favorite.

I took a months-long break from this anime only to return, rewatch this episode, and remember that Kakeru is literally the most irritating character. He doesn't learn no matter how many times he's given a lesson. He's so toxic to his team members, I really don't see the point in him even trying to stay with the team (other than them qualifying for events with enough members). Regardless, it's hard to watch an anime when I hate the MC!

But I won't drop this anime. 8 episodes is too long of a commitment to go giving up now. Plus, I love sports anime & esp track & field, so I wanna see how the story progresses.

Haiji is the kind of guy you want to marry & bring home to your parents. And Jesus.....if you want speed, take the bullet train. Lol!!!!!!!! He nailed that one x)

So much respect for Ōji. I can’t believe he even wanted to buy that treadmill. That parallel of Kakeru asking Ōji to leave the team if he clocked the same timing again against his own frustration of remaining stagnant. Beauty in the dialogue.

I somehow ended up tearing up at this episode (it wasnt even sad, im just really emotional). Kakeru is being a toxic influence on the other guys, especially with Nico-chan who now is skipping meals in order to lose weight (seeing this honestly hit home, because i used to do the same when i was younger).

Kakeru needs to understand that everyone is giving their all, and unlike him, none of these guys have the same experience as him, some didn't even exercised before starting all this training. ITS OBVIOUS they will get tired faster and run slower. He is over-working himself to the point his body is betraying him, and the worst part is that he is demanding everyone to keep up with him. This is self destructive behaviour (you can even see the toll that is taking on his body with the eyebags).

And lastly, asking Prince to leave the team was so uncalled for. THE DUDE IS TRYING SO HARD, HE WAS WILLING ON BUYING A TREADMILL LIKE AAHHH at least give him some credit FOR TRYING.
