> Why are anime fans considered creepy?
1) because anime fans are seen as mostly adult males. Adult males are considered creepy by default, and have to prove they're not by being well-behaved slaves of society. And they're still considered creepy anyway.

2) Because we like anime girls. Liking anybody is a sure sign of creepiness, and being a all-hating force of pure evil like Hitler is considered charismatic.

In short, sexism at its finest.

1) "Creepy" is an inherently subjective description that cannot be measured by a measurement device. Hence, any statement of creepiness should be prefixed with reference to the person giving the estimate.
Hint: Since women evaluate potential of sexual assault when measuring danger, their evaluations of creepiness will be visibly different from those of men.

only makes sense for women.
Sure, Alex Jones isn't winning any beauty pageants any time soon, but he doesn't look even a bit scary.

2) Creepiness (as defined as "similarity to rapist/pedophile/serial killer") is socially constructed. If it was that easy to detect these people, police would not have so much problems catching them.

Not surprised. If I'm not mistaken CNN also said that Pepe the frog meme is racist and used by white supremacists. Not to mention BBC news making a video about how anime fans are autistic. Or a news article of people blaming anime for making a girl burn down her house. The list just goes on. This is pretty much what happened to video games and how the media were blaming them for school shootings or saying that everyone who plays games is a fat neckbeard who lives in his mothers basement, or how they train people how to kill and become serial killers. This is pretty much the reason why you shouldn't take modern journalism seriously.

People enjoy judging, it makes them feel superior. Anime and its fans don't hold any special position in that regard, just another cog in the wheel.

Just look at the appeal of these cringe compilations that people love to watch. Most of it are just people genuinely having fun and not worrying what other people would think. It's ten times less obnoxious than the people who laugh at them and hide that they watch anime in real life because they are insecure as fuck.

I mean I've seen Richard Spencer talk about the Pepe meme a lot so it's not like they're wrong. The alt-right loves that meme. The meme itself is not inherently racist, but it did become like a symbol for the alt-right.

Memes are definitely making it into real life, into political debates, into news. It's just part of the times we live in. 10 years ago that would have been unimaginable, just like a president who mostly communicates via twitter. The times are changing.

It depends on how you express it. If you just like it, watch your anime, read your manga and interact a bit with the communities on internet, even having figures or Dakimakura though not making a fuss of it, that imo wouldn't be that much creepy. I mean, it's your shit, do whatever you want with it lol

But if they love shouting Pokemon openings or quoting anime dialogues in Japanese to call people's attention, and maybe plus all I mentioned before, of course it's creepy, even if you're 13.

Well, it's @DrSexy , and if I remember him right, he's the guy with a pretty extreme outlook on gender and sexuality. (somewhere on the crazy side of anti-feminism)
I'd say that being an anime fan does not change much in how people see him.

In short, news exist to divide people nowadays. They make parents hate their kids, which in turn leads to kids hating their parents, and all of that just leads to more dumbness and unhappiness.

Yes and yes.

There are loads of anime that have a casual, romanticized or humorous approach towards rape, sexual harassment, pedophilia and incest. Main-streamers who know about anime often avoid becoming fans because they are aware of or have encountered these kinds of shows. Ghibli movies gets a pass (mostly; I'm thinking of you, Pom Poko) because it's almost entirely a kid's studio, and thus, is almost entirely void of sexuality. But then, Ghibli is only one studio, and hardly represents most of what we watch.

Shows that are 'creepy' in the above ways appeal to creepy people. I don't believe that these people represent the bulk of anime fans, but they are so morally repugnant to the mainstream, so horrifying, that they tend to eclipse awareness of anime fans who aren't creepy. It doesn't help that anime fans who aren't creepy tend to be ashamed of being associated with those who are, and thus, hide the fact that they are anime fans.

Want to help change the perception that anime fans are creepy? Make a friend, then have enough conversations with them that you manage to trick them into thinking you're normal. Then, meet up with them while wearing an anime t-shirt, backpack or phone-charm. After you finish helping them scrape the exploded pieces of their brain off the walls and funneling them back into their skull, there's a good chance that they will be forced to accept that not all anime fans are creeps.

Masturbating to doujins in girls' locker room is pretty damn perverted, if you ask me. Most people choose places where they are unlikely to get caught, like their own rooms.

It always confuses me why incest is put in the same line as rape and pedophilia. It's just love between relatives, right?

On the other hand, it weirds me out how people can take casual or humorous approach to extreme violence, but feel threatened when an anime shows some panties.

Well that's because there are creepy fans out there. There aren't many of them but they do get the spotlight in a bad way.

Plus there is quite a bit of creepy stuff in anime as well like Lolis and shit.
Sadly that eclipses the rest when ppl notice that such shows exist.

So yh sure CNN and BBC do label the fans which is wrong but they label fans because of the above mentionned reasons.

However, I once saw a reporter visit a Female Otaku about her hobby and it was rather positive.

Often it is hard to understand a person without looking at his/her profile.
Like, how do you even learn the person's gender for gender-based discussions? With a name like "UknwWhu" and a picture of a toy getting cut with scissors, I have no idea.
A person's favorites list is probably the best insight into a person's personality we can have.

Other times, I go to that person's profile to give examples out of anime we've both seen.
