The protagonists are important characters in a sports anime as they are the ones you root for, but a great sports anime should have great antagonists too! They should be well developed characters that make you sympathise with them when they lose against the protagonist team. So, who is your favourite sports anime antagonist and why?

Basing in the few sports anime I have watched, I liked Oikawa from Haikyuu because how much of an amusing jerk he is, yet at the same time for how passionate he is for the volleyball.
I also liked the Ass-Eater from Keijo!!!!!!!!, even if she was a minor rival, her personality, design and powers were cool.

I'll go with Sawamura Ryuuhei from Hajime no Ippo (Rising). The aura around him was different, and he truly embiodised danger. His build up was very detailed.

Unfortunately the anime version didn't fully flesh out his character and important scenes were shortened or entirely removed. Usually the term rival suits better in the concept of a sports anime, but for him antagonist or even villain is more fitting.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

I dislike all the Antagonist... maybe I'm too critical towards sport anime. I cringed in Haikyuu due to all of them taking Volleyball too seriously... Ah another deja vu

From that dumb character post.

I was gonna say something like this. They are also too friendly with the main characters that it's hard to see them as "the enemies" of the main characters.

My favorite is Kuroo from Haikyuu :D

I haven't seen enough, but my most favorite would have to be Wenge Kong. His character development was great to watch.

If there was longer exposure as an antagonist rather than 1-2 episodes of competition, I would have mentioned Keijo!!!!!!!! characters. Also since they're training to become professionals, pretty much anyone besides Nozomi can be seen as an antagonist.

That was the best 1 on 1 match I've seen for the series, so she's definitely up there for me as one of the best "antagonists" in the show. Also plenty of laughs were made.

Both Daiki Aomine from KnB and Keigo Atobe from PoT for me.. The reason is because both antagonist are an overwhelming opponent that push the protagonist to their limit which is entertaining to see especially in a sport anime IMO..
Reality is the lifeblood that makes a work pulse with energy. Reality itself is entertainment

I actually tend to have a type when it comes to antagonists! My favorite is always the one who has a terrible personality, or will do anything to win! Hanamiya makoto from kuroko no basuke, daishou suguru from haikyuu!!, midousuji akira from yowamushi pedal, these are all some of my favorites! They don’t see what they’re doing as wrong and believe that you should do whatever it takes to win. I admire ruthlessness in antagonists!

For me it's a pretty close tie between Oikawa and Ushijima, both from Haikyuu. Maybe I like Oikawa a little bit more because actually stoped being a jerk midway through the series.

Nitta from Touch is a great antagonist, he got before Tatsuya at koushien, he's more handsome, overall a better pitcher, has a cute sister, good grades, rides a motor bike and there's something between he and Minami, he has a better team at Sumi than our protag and weirdly enough he has a great personality too. The rivalry between Tatsuya and Nitta was awesome, that final match was on another level of epicness, I wonder if Kazuya could've beaten Nitta

Another one is Honami Sayaka, well, I never hated a character so much but it's like I love to hate on her. She hates Yawara to a passion, she pursued her for 8 years in order to beat her at judo and never backed off even when she lost the first times. The amount of manipulation, mind games and dirty tactics used by her were Friend-like (the one from 20th century boys), she even trained one year in the woods and I bet she used illegal drugs too for it was impossible to defeat todo yuki after she lost the previous year to Kim

Ricardo Martinez from Hajime no Ippo, he appears for few time but he was so charismatic. However, he’s valid only if we consider him as an antagonist. The other one is Jose Mendoza from Ashita no Joe.

Agon Kongo is the main reason why Shinryuuji VS Deimon is the best match in Eyeshield 21 imo. He is not an ordinary rival-type character, he is a straight bad person/villain. Agon's success as a villain, why it's hard to be archieved by other series, is also because Deimon has Hiruma as his foil (and vice versa).

also going with Sendo. Similar to the MC in fighting style and would make a great MC himself, would just change the "weak" character becoming strong into strong becoming stronger (which arguably the MC wasn't really weak to begin with). Love how his nickname is from Rocky Marciano instead of the movie Rocky.

Midosuji is certainly an antagonist, but that got me wondering. Does the Hakone High team count as antagonist or protagonist? I feel like they had to introduce Midosuji as a new antagonist because the Hakone team got too developed to be an antogonist.
