Has Anime Made You Less Homophobic or More Tolerate in General?

Tbh I used to hate the gays but ever since I started watching more and more anime (not necessarily yaoi) Ive come to accept them a bit more. A little yaoi bait in some anime would be funny and I started to realize that these ppl have feelings. Its weird how an anime can change my viewpoint on life. But has this ever happens to you or with some other instance? Another example is that I used to victim blame rape victims but when an anime would have implied rape it would infuriate me and feel for these women.

Anime has done nothing for me.
Like literally nothing at all.

But yeah, MAL has given me an amazing gay friend & he has helped me see the world through their eyes & put me in their shoes..

My only problem with him though is that he thinks being gay is the norm & being straight is weird..
He apparently doesn't believe in 'straight rights'

I had the same problem as you. I used to hate people who were gay. I used to make couple of jokes of them on youtube from time to time. After I began to get myself more involved with animes I've come to accept them. I really don't care if people are gay or not but keep it to yourself.

I have never had a problem with gay people.
and I grew up with a christian mother & a self proclaimed hillbilly for a dad.

anime had nothing to do with it. although I can see how anime might have that effect on some people.

Anime helped turn me from a religious conservative into a liberal agnostic.

I used to consider homosexuality a sin when I was religious.

So yeah, you could say that indirectly it did.

I doubt OP said "homophobic" meaning fear of homosexuals though, because for some reason you can refer to yourself as homophobic, when you're actually just a douschebag.

Can't say because I've never cared if someone was hetero- or homosexual. I still hate transvestites and flamers though. And for anyone wondering why: transvestites because science isn't at a point where we can change chromosomes so they take comfort in lies which annoys me and flamers because I can't stand extremely outgoing people.

At first, I just thought gays were weird, but rare creatures, but I never have really considerate myself homophobic, but the constant and annoying fujopandering in anime media made me more intolerant.

I hate men acting girly and anime is full of shit like that, so yes, anime made me more "homophobic".They're always trying to make male characters girlier, with hairpins(Nisekoi), bare midriff(Tales of Abyss),Loreal's fluffy hair(LoGH),twintails(Assassination Classroom) and forced crossdressing scenes(Macross Frontier and almost all comedy animes). It's like the producers only care about fujos and fuck everyone else.

The first time I heard about the possibility of guy loving another guy was in anime (Inuyasha... Forgot his name... Close to the end of the first season... there was one of those group of 7 warriors).. I found it hell weird, and thought it didn't exist in real life... But maybe it helped me to hate as I loved that character.

Introducing diet bigotry! for those of you that enjoy the taste of regular bigotry but don't want to deal with all the guilt that comes with it.

However, thanks to anime. I became quite laidback for things aren't acceptable in real life. Like incest and sexual violence.

Hourou Musuko helped quell some of my transphobic sentiments by showing what trans people go through. Intolerance, both conscious and subconscious, usually comes from simply not understanding people, or a lack of exposure to them.

Probably more tolerant if anything.

And if anime fans become more intolerant, it's because they deliberately choose anime they know they'll hate, and just throw it like a child receiving vegetables instead of cookies for dessert.

being homophobic might hint that you're insecure towards your sexual orientation. calling it wrong becuase jesus and the bible condone it is just a strawman argument to shadow the fact that they might have feelings for the same sex.
and nope never had problems with homossexuals, in fact i have several gay and lesbian friends

Not really, this whole homophobic = being homosexual isnt a valid argument. Clearly it is made to insult the person who is homophobic. While I accept them in society I still feel its wrong. Just like I accept people who eat eggplant yet I despise it myself. Dismissing someones perceptive on life because you feel homosexuality is fine is a weak cop out, I find it funny how "liberals" only want to assume their ideals is the right one while anyone who is against it is wrong or insecure. People like to blame homophobia on religion but I myself am not a person who is against homosexuality because of religion. Again just to make it clear I don't agree with them but I will accept them.

wow comparing disliking a vegetable to homphobia is the worst comparison i've seen in my life. plus I said "might" not "it's a universal truth", some people act like that because they are afraid to come out of the closet, others are homophobic because certain parts of the bible that "condone" homossexuality, others because they think is unnatural, even though there are plenty cases in the animal kingdom where animals have a "relationship" with the same sex, like penguins and apes, and the rest is due to the pressure of family values and a conservative mindset

Lol, those conversations must be hilarious.

To me... well I guess I got to see a side of the world I normally wouldn't have. I'm an introvert IRL so I don't talk to people I don't care about. I never actually noticed the existence of gay people until highschool, and then started watching more anime outside of my comfort zone.

Of course their sexuality confused me to no end at first. At first, the confusion was straight up anger. When I was 16 I'd post on Veoh stuff like "Why do you have to ruin such an awesome story with this type of romance," and stuff like that. I'm glad my first experience being directly affected with homosexuality was with anime, because I gradually grew to accept that it exists and that it doesn't really directly affect me. So when my childhood friend came out to me as being Pan when I was in college, I was one of the few people in his life that didn't overreact and treated him the exact same.

So yeah... I guess anime did help.

I don't see any problem with it irl. And don't really care about other people's sexual orientation. Anime didn't really play a role in that.

Sounds like confirmation bias. Consider also the source of the material you are being exposed to and possible motivations of the author(s).

If you approached anime (or any medium) purely as a scholar it would never intersect your personal views.

Being exposed to new points of view from various sources is how people develop their personal views. I agree it can be helpful to think about the message of things you're exposed to but thats so you can think about how those views intersect or might impact your own, not so you can dismiss them for being different. Assimilating and adjusting your views based on new information is the exact opposite of confirmation bias.

The anime community opened my eyes to the fact that homophobia is still a real problem so I started speaking out against it more openly if I came across it. That's pretty much it.

Yaoi itself doesn't influence my opinion of gay people because they have nothing to do with it. If anything it should influence your opinion of heterosexual women because that's who draws and buys them mostly. If I took Yaoi seriously it would make me homophobic because 80%+ of the time it perpetuates the homophobic idea that gay people will aggressively pursue heterosexuals, rape them and turn them gay. That's just about the least progressive stance on homosexuality I can imagine outside of legal repercussions.
So if the depiction of homosexuality in Yaoi made someone more tolerant they must have been pretty goddamn homophobic before.
I probably regret this post by now.
