| Both shows are very similar, guy in highschool meets a variety of girls around town, you feel sad for them as you learn about them, and it ends with one of the girls. Both were made by Key and the animes by Kyoto Studio, both are romance-melodrama-comedies, next to no ecchi (Kanon VN only had H scenes but Tomoyo got a spin off with some) Main differences: Kanon's "afterstory" is just the last episode of the show while Clannad's saddest parts are in the second series. The girls aren't exactly the same and Kanon will have more supernatural moments compared to Clannad. The mc are in different situations, Clannad it's a delinquent who has problems with his father and just now getting to talk with the people around him while Kanon the mc is revisiting the town and can't remember everyone he's already met and it's like he's remeeting them. Clannad always seems to be mentioned more when talking about "sad" anime but it's older sister Kanon doesn't get as much attention (there's also Air but I haven't watch that one). While I personally like it more I thought I'd ask everyone elses opinion or reasoning. |

| No idea, if I have to choose: 1. Clannad Movie 2. Kanon 3. Clannad AS 4.Clannad Movie is less of bullshit - more concretes, better presentation of their dream. Sadness in serie was stuffing in excess. There are so many sad scenes in Kanon too, but Yuuichi teasing everyone adds this high power + he's more helpful & I prefere him than Tomoya. So as you see as older it is - it's can be better. |

| I loved Clannad and I have played Kanon (the visual novel). It's true they have similar characteristics, however the characters in Clannad are much more likable than that of Kanon. |

| As everyone else has said, it's mostly After Story which makes people heap praises at Clannad. I've met quite a number of people who disliked or even hated the first season but loved After Story. If it wasn't for AS, I probably would prefer Kanon ahead of Clannad. It should also be noted however that Tomoya is a much more interesting and cooler protagonist than Yuuichi -- yes, this is largely due to After Story as well, but even in just comparing the first season of Clannad to Kanon, Tomoya is the superior protagonist. Yuuichi is cool, but he's not remotely as interesting and has a tendency to be more of an asshole. I believe this is a large reason people drift to Clannad. |

| It's been ages since I saw Kanon, but from what I remember: • Much heavier supernatural realism • The side characters aren't as standout • The story is less likely to be relatable • The comedy is much weaker Do note that my memory is very fuzzy, though. |

I felt the comedy was about the same but eh. Supernatural might just be personal preference but I agree having it show up with most of them felt odd while Clannad just had the ghost girl. |
