So I want to watch Sword Art Online II (Second Season) before the first one and there is my main question: are there any connections in second season to the first one because by looking at synopsis there's barely no connection to the first season whatsoever.

Why I want to watch the second season first is because I saw that super AMV of it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A13OF7Ov5E0) with loads of action and guns etc. I also saw few previews and cut-scenes from the first season and I will watch it eventually anyway since this series is on my list to watch it. So is there any connection between season one and two or should I watch the second season first ?

Well the main plot of the SAOII assumes you have seen the first season.
Kinda like most direct sequels...

It is direct sequel with many references to events that happened in s1. As well as you would not know anyting about almost any character if you jumped right at s2.

Obviously, you should watch S1 first. Also:

- You wouldn't know about Kirito's harem waifu which is Asuna.
- Second arc takes place in a VRMMO setting which was introduced first in S1.
- You should watch the first trainwreck to brace yourself for the coming of the second one.

You won't understand shit and it's not as good as the first season. I still don't know why Tokyo Ghoul root A was dubbed before the first season, but it's just as stupid to watch SAO backwards as it is to watch Tokyo Ghoul backwards.

Of course you should watch SAO 2 before SAO1 OP

Don't you know that sequels are supposed to be watched before prequels?

I'd suggest watching from the last episode to first. It might make the show more interesting.

You have to watch season 1 first and I thought season 2 would be exciting too ... it's not. Season 1 was better.

Does it really matter what piece of turd you watch first?
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

Isn't that series a different setting with no direct relation to the previous one.

Why do you want to watch SAO in the first Place? But hey start With season 3 first. And skip the two other, cuz it's the best season so far.

I heard Kirito is walking around with PTSD in the second season. You may want to watch the first one to get a better understanding of how he got it (and the harem).

Since there is a harem in it, does that mean there is a lot of fan service in it too ??

Because it was overhyped before its airing and people gone mad when they saw that the anime isn't what they expect. It isn't that bad, have good animation and a nice OST. An enjoyable timekill, if you ask me.

There is no real harem, in the sense that it can't be categorised as a harem, and the protagonist is anything but indecisive. I suppose there is fanservice? I actually couldn't tell at first, until people pointed out that close up shots of a character's butt (fully dressed, not even panties) is considered fanservice. I personally didn't see it that way. Overall, it's a LOT tamer than what's regarded as fan service in most other anime.

If you are going to watch it, definitely start with Season 1. There is 0 reason you should start with Season 2. You'll also be mightily confused if you do.

While certainly not the best anime by any stretch of imagination, I find the entire series very... oddly relaxing. Great for rewatching and just letting your mind rest while the plot flows by. Should be fairly enjoyable on the first watch too, since the production quality itself is quite stellar.

They dubbed Root A first because they'd just started doing simuldubs and Tokyo Ghoul happened to be one of the most popular shows airing that season.

At a Q&A session I went to at a convention last month Mike McFarland (Who directed the dub) described the great lengths they went to ensure everything was consistent. Basically he said that it was a huge pain in the ass and that they'll probably never do anything like that ever again.

YEs.
IF I understand, what the OP is interested in is the part with guns. ImO that's not a good idea to watch SAO just for that. There's enough anime with guns to not feel the incentive to watch SAO just for his imo.

People hate the original because it doesn't do something with all its cool ideas. By the end it's just fighting a senseless villain. Also, the main character is a gary stu.

The harem aspect isn't as prominent as people say, though.

@OP: You can watch season 2's first arc (the one with all the guns and shooting) just fine if somebody retells you important parts of season 1 in 5-10 of sentences. It's probably not a good idea, but you can do it.

Let me do it for you, in case you will really want to watch.

SAO doesn't have much fanservice (strict definition). If you're going for season 2, expect to see a lot more of Sinon's ass (covered by quite short shorts) than it deserves.

People hate SAO because it isn't an edgy bloody gorefest like Shingeki no Kyoujin or Tokyo Ghoul.
People hate SAO because the MC isn't useless.
People hate SAO because they want anime to be almost all boys, like in Naruto or One Piece.

In short, fuck those people. Go watch SAO and see for yourself.

SAO is not all that bad imo. I actually think the first season was a good anime, though it had much more potential. Second season was more boring, but still a fine watch.
Basically Kirito is the only annoying factor at times. Animation, sound and story are pretty good.

SAO is not even that bad, people are just overreacting. I mean, we see more terrible anime each season but no one bats an eye because its not popular and there is no bandwagon to jump in. "I hate SAO that means I am cool!" that's how I see them these day. People need to stop caring about this so much just as we stop caring about Justin Bieber,Twilight,Fifity Shades of Grey and etc..

It's not bad, it just didn't live up to its hype or potential. If anything, it's like Guilty Crown - good OST and animation, but slipped around in characters and plot (especially part 2).

On another note, SAO haters are always so butthurt and complain all the time yet they blame the fans for being annoying?
