I noticed something really lame in Funimation's stream of the latest Shimoneta episode. In their version, the drool from a particularly sloppy kiss was edited out (or, maybe, with cooperation with JC Staff, that animation layer was turned off). Here's a comparison between their release, and the uncensored version that aired on AT-X in Japan.

Mild spoilers.

Funimation:

3 questions:
- Why?
- Is content censored for pay subscribers as well?
- How do you feel about this, and censorship in general?

Because Japan accepts sexual perversion in a way the west cannot.

No idea, but probably not.

I don't feel. As an adult I can handle whatever is dished up to me, but I recognize that many people cannot accept it.

It's categorized as adult scene. There are kids who watch that stuff, you know.

What I feel? It depends, no, actually I hate it. Why should they do that? Sex/Porn/Lewdness is an education, and it would ruin your demeanors if you don't know iota of knowledge about them, well, something bad will happen. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Funimation has tried censoring Blu-rays though, but they backtracked after the anime community threw a collective fit. What I'm wondering is—if Funimation is so uptight with what Japan produces, why are they even in the anime industry?

For da $$$

They know that there will always be some people out there who won't give a shit about censoring as long as they can have their Chinese cartoons dubbed

It's not that I need to see drool. I just don't like it when someone's work is edited to appease a handful of hypersensitive people. Now, if this is being done in cooperation with JC Staff to help sell uncensored Blu-ray, that's cool. But Funimation has tried to censor Blu-rays in the past, so I don't entirely trust them.

Well there's always been a quite a few raised eyebrows and finger wagging at stuff like lolis and whatnot. So it might come down to trying to grab a wider audience, but instead alienating the actual target audience.

As I've said in various places where this has popped up, that censorship is NOT Funimation's work. They just get the non AT-X broadcast version for their streams, because that's what the JP companies provide. Go on nyaa or wherever and find a non AT-X TV raw, and I guarantee it'll be just the same as the Funi stream. (Okay, there don't seem to be non AT-X raws out there for that show, but I did the same thing with Dragonar Academy back when it was airing, and it checked out.)

So how come my Rosario+Vampire fansubs have bats and light beams everywhere, but the Funimation DVDs are uncensored? Aside from the ancient DBZ dub which certain people still can't get over, pretty much anything censored that Funi's released recently has been because the Japanese didn't provide the right materials, like their initial release of Sankarea that used the TV version. They later went back and released the disc version after fan outcry, despite allegedly being such a shitty company. (Viz and Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan, otoh...)

Yeah. Take nipples, for instance. Male nipples, allowed. Female nipples, not allowed. The entire breast can be shown, but not the nipple. This makes zero sense.

Exactly. A part of me still worries if Funimation has any influence in the way anime is produced, and if their presence will result in shows that take fewer creative risks for the sake of mainstream Western audiences.

Unrelated to anime, but this reminds me of a time they censored a magazine cover because the shirtless model on it looked like he might be mistaken for a woman. Gotta hide those might-be-boobs-at-first-glance! What a baffling mindset.

Can people actually read this instead of professing FunI as the devil because they (allegedly) didn't show some fucking drool?!?!

Let's think about it sensibly. There are way worse things in this show outside of that kiss, so it's weird for Funi to do so. Zalis explanation makes sense.

Serious answer: There will almost always be censors with these kinds of companies I think. Plus they need to make money by getting people to buy the uncensored versions.

yep this is the truth, its not Funimations fault, its the japanese TV requirements on censorship, AT-X channel of japan is just an exception since they mostly air uncensored version of an anime

Nipples are censored to do with Japan's mixed up obscenity laws. It's got nothing to do with funimation.

Anyway, sometimes censorship is to a shows benefit. Drool all over a sloppy kiss is one of those occasions. Bravo funimation as the drool shot makes my stomach turn.

This. It's something a lot of people are physically repulsed by, as in, it makes them feel queasy. So editing something like that scene is probably more social awareness than censorship.

Censorship is necessary. Not everybody wants to see excessively or gratuitiously lewd, hardcore or graphic scenes in a show just because they have the age to. It's only bad if it impedes on your viewing experience like in Tokyo Ghoul, but well, that's why we have BDs.

From what I've understood AT-X is a special pay channel or something. Funimation gets the streams that are for the normal channels which is why they are different and censored. Paid subscribers do get uncensored episodes eventually though. I believe they get them when the domestic release gets close to coming out.

That's so dumb. I wonder where this thinking came from. I know this word gets thrown around a lot, but I think this may be a genuine case of sexism, an attempt to control who can see what on a female figure (or a figure that may appear to be female). It's a less extreme variant of a burka.

Fizix said:

It's not just Japan that does this. A lot of countries, including 'Merica, have a big problem with showing female nipples. It's inconsistent and illogical.

You do know that it depends on what studio they are getting the episodes from right? Same with Crunchyroll they have no control over it. Unless the series is doing well for them then they will put down more money to get the rights to stream uncensored version. Or maybe like Japan they will save for BD release for the $$$.

I can understand about the Vampire anime though cause soccer Moms and bible thumpers would cause a riot about it. xD Glad to see it got a unedited release though even if I will never touch or look at this series.

Welp, people should have bought Bandai and Geneon DVDs back in the 2000's then. We have zero right to complain since we did it to ourselves. I already got into a fight with some of their fans on here, I haven't heard enough of their post 2010 dubs to know how much better they are now so I won't speak out of my a**, but the Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine dub was not censored. I just didn't like Chris Sabat and Sonny Strait compared to Tony Oliver and Rich Epcar (they kept Fujiko's VA and Goemon I was kind of meh on with the Geneon dub anyway).

as a Japanaese i just want all dubs to be as clsoe as possiabkle to the Japanese so people get he same expreance as i got with the anime

note i said cultural censorship ie remoivng japanese things b that worse than animation censorship cuase that can be removed

Funimation is trying to act pure as if they pray Jesus 24/7, tbh its so lame that they censor this type of BS. Shame on them, their staff who modifies the lewd scene first gets to enjoy the lewd scenes whereas we don't.

Also guys if anyone can tell me other than Funimation is there any other way to watch uncensored version?
