Great first episode. Tora's voice is fucking sick ^$^
This show's got good comedy and the art isn't bad either.
I'm definitely looking forward to the other episodes.

Didn't really enjoy the OP, though the ED was all right. The episode itself had me on the edge of my seat, and it went by so fast that I hadn't realized that 20 minutes had passed. Looks like this will be a good season after all.

To be honest, this doesn't seem that outdated as some people are saying. The action scenes were extremely fluid, loved it. The character designs are a little ugly but I can deal with it cause this was very HxH.

Solid episode. Definitely watching this all the way through.

Ushio looks more like an Hajime no Ippo character imo.

Mappa really couldve made cleaner looking visuals... As far as the art style and animation, this definitely isnt Mappa's best.

This series could really do without the comedy.

I just hope this isn't one of those Beelzebub type of series where it has the opportunity to have an epic episode but then it just turns out to be watered down

Could instantly tell this was being directed by Ippo's director, just from the feel and flow of the comedy.

Just like I thought the action works better animated, the comedy too to my surprise. Well they adapted the first chapter pretty well, with some of the school stuff from the next chapter added, which works fairly well imo. I was expecting Mayuko to sound more bubbly, but eh the voice still suits her.

ugh i feel like ima drop this one .... if i wanted to watch a 90s anime i woulda went and found some 90s anime...this is just terrible. why didnt the studio try to give us a modern approach at old manga like parasyte did.

That's why Parasyte's adaptation was pretty bad comparing to the manga :)
The nostalgic feel is definitely its strongest aspect and I'm really diggin' it.

This is my substitute to JoJo's fridays. So I'm looking forward to it.
Also the OP is sick. The best one so far.

Not implying that it's a bad thing, but how can a show remind a viewer of not two or three, but eight animes in just the 1st ep?

Me: "Oh look at that style it's like hajime no ippo." *sees long-haired monster* "Wait, is that raizen (yuu yuu hakusho)?" *sees impaled spear* "Oh no, it's inu-yasha." *first girl is called inoue* "Orihime? (bleach)" *with the other girl* Me: "Kyoko and Haru! (reborn!)" *fishy thingies appear* "Those look like ayakashi (kekkaishi)...." *ushio and tora work together* "This is so Zenki..." *a cat-like monster commenting on eating his tamer someday* "It's Madara (natsume yuujinchou)".

But other than these intrusive thoughts, I pretty much enjoyed the first ep. Will watch. XD

Good start.
Old-school shounen anime series makes me nostalgic.

I know they’re making a 13 episodes second season next year that will supposedly adapt the final arc of the manga, but I’m just wondering how many arcs (and which ones) will this season adapt. I’d really want to see the The Kansai Yōkai Army and Artificial Monster Technology arcs animated.......

Anyhow, looking forward to the next episode and more of Ushio and Tora’s yōkai fights........ not too much about the comedy though.

It's only the first episode, so I'm sure it'll get better, since there are plenty of positive reviews for the source material. First impression though for this episode was alright, the comedy was sort of a miss for me, and I agree with Flawfinder about the action going pretty much straight to climax without showing much at all. I also don't really like Ushio's rough voice, as someone else mentioned, but that's something I can get used to. Overall though, I think there's some charm to this show so far.

THIS.

---

Humor was relatively well-timed, I was laughing pretty hard when Ushio continued to hammer the spear into Tora. XD

It's so cliche and so oldschool; typical hotheaded MC stumbles across something that triggers monster (youkai) vision, suddenly a situation arises, and BAM super power obtained! Honestly it reminded me of Bleach the entire episode, and then a bit like Natsume Yuujinchou (Madara and Tora). Also Inuyasha (discovering well vs Tora = new life).

I love the feeling that the OP gives off! It's intense and has a song that sounds like it's straight from the 90s.
The animation stays true to 90s and it works for me, but I would have prefered some different character designs. However, everything is fluid with great background/scenery, and it feels like HQ movement. It controls the mood quite well and I felt the intensity where it needed to be. (Budget <3) It was fun to watch despite how extremely cliche it is. I know it won't be anything special or new story-wise, but I will enjoy this just for how classic it is. All the developments in the first episode are nostalgic and stereotypical of older shounen. If it makes itself unique later, even better.

I will definitely watch this. It was what I expected (a very good thing!), but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Never thought it would be so exciting. My inner fangirl of retro shounen and 90's anime is reawakening~

Definitely feels old school but I'd rather they keep the style as it is rather than making it look too modernise :D Gave me back my Inuyasha loving day feelings!

Still sucks that this will only be 39 episodes when it could easily be over 100 considering the manga is over 300 chapters. Regardless I'm curious to see where this will go and I really enjoyed the first episode.

Very Solid Episode

Can't stand the Opening/Ending song's but that's it.
I will totally be watching this, I was laughing my ass off when they were fighting and calling each other name's. Also I loved the "I don't wanna be a tiger" that was funny.

And damn, loved how her became a monster himself (liked the hair growing out) this is going to be a fun ride. Also both girls are into him right off the bat it seems??

This first episode of Ushio to Tora was a great start to the series! It definitely has an old school shounen feel to it, especially since the manga is from the 1990s. xD At first Tora seemed quite intimidating and menacing but Ushio wasn't too fazed about him. Tora was so desperate for Ushio to take out the spear for him, haha. When Ushio finally took out the spear from Tora I knew something good was going to happen. Ushio ended up becoming one with the spear and gained demon powers during that time; really cool stuff! Can't wait to see more of Ushio and Tora working together as a duo. Overall, very entertaining first episode and can't wait for more! OP sounds sooooooo 90s shounen but the ED is definitely something else; I like the ED more although it's Sonar Pocket and I loved World Trigger OP1 by them. :P

Praise MAPPA for sticking with the 90s vibe and not trying to drag it into the modern day like Madhouse did to Parasyte. You can't drag characters cemented in their 90s tropes into otherwise modern storytelling lmao, it doesn't work and you kill the characters, just like how Madhouse destroyed Kana and Mitsuo.
