Like, Baccano has 20 million people in it whom your are forced to remember, while other anime are solely about 1 character which can be boring at times.

A big cast if executed well can really bring the story to life. The more the merrier, as they say. But it's not necessary, an anime with a small cast can also be just as good.

Yes because then there's a higher chance that I find characters that I like. On the other side if there are too many, my favourite characters won't get as much screentime. In a small cast you can develop each person better.

I'm not sure.

Not always, but that tends to be the case if enough focus is given to individuals.

It depends on the scope of the anime.
I don't expect an anime like Madoka to match the number of One Piece's cast.

Shakugan no Shana Final cast it's various times bigger than the second season, and that only made worse something that was already bad.

not necessarily. sometimes it can work to your advantage like in baccano, drrr, fairy tail etc

but in shows like bleach and one piece most characters are just fodder and exist only to extend the story

Gintama has a pretty huge cast and I can probably remember every single one of the important ones. That's how you know a show is THAT good.

Depends. More characters makes it more difficult to develop them properly and give them enough screen time. If its executed well (LOGH) then its deffinitely great thing and I prefer it over small cast. But then there are anime like One Outs or Akagi that are mostly about one character all the time and they are amazing as well. So everything depends on execution.

It really depends on how much each character is focused on. This mainly comes down to how many episodes each show is. Less characters in a 13 episode show works better than more, but something like Eureka Seven of FMA: B works great with a bigger cast because they develop most if not all of them since they are 50 eps plus.

depends on the kind of show and character(s), a character like Guts could hold a show pretty much on his own but a good comedy or team based show I think the more the merrier

The obvious answer is "Depends".

Take sports anime for example. You have Hajime no Ippo which is a great show but only has less than 10 characters to remember while you have Kuroko no Basuke with over 20 characters if you include the supporting teams and such, but it's also a good show. And one of Kurobasu's strongest points is having a large, eccentric cast.

Ofc it depends. I can't enjoy a huge cast full of flat characters, such as Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei, I don't even remember their names.

Well it depends. A show with a small cast can be really good, but it can also suck because there aren't enough characters. With a big cast a show can be really good too, but it can make some characters less rememberable.

Another thing you need to take think about when you think about this topic is the length of the show. If a show has a large cast but is too short, it can be a really boring show because there isn't enough character development. So if the show is a bit longer it can make a huge difference.
And visa versa with a small show, if a show has a small cast but a large amount of episodes it can get boring because you only see the same old characters all over again, so if the show is a bit shorter it would also make a difference.

I'm not saying that a short show MUST have a small cast, or a long show MUST have a big cast. But from my point of perspective it is just more logical.

As with most things, it depends. There definitely are series that pull off bigger casts brilliantly (Soul Eater, Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere, Akame ga Kill!) but thats because those authors take the time to develop those characters and give them adequate screen time. Then theres stories like Bleach where that fucker of an author just introduces characters like crazy and of course forgets about their existence.

Depends for various reasons. For example, in harems, it gets confusing. One girl counts as three separate entities: first boob, second boob, the actual fucking face. Cause you know, boobs are given more screen time. So if there's one guy and 5 girls, there would be *does crazy math* oh fuck it, you know whats my point, right?

The idea of quantity over quality makes no sense. An anime with 1 well-constructed character will always be better than an anime with 20+ lifeless/boring characters.

I tend to really like large casts as different focus can be given and it gives more varieties to the story. But an anime doesn't need a large cast and for some it would be detrimental.

Obviously depends. Depends on the pretenses of the story. Baccano works like a puzzle of different and simultaneous stories connecting to each other, so the large cast makes a lot of sense. This question is basically the same as asking if character development makes a show better. Depends on the pretenses of the story. Sometimes you really don't need development, can be extremely forced and unnecessary at times, although is quite natural some small changes in the characterization.

Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere in my opinion is a terrible example of what can happen with a gigantic cast with no truly distinctive characters (aided by the fact that I didn't understand nor gave a shit about the plot.) Sure, we know that a large cast CAN work, but it's certainly not the optimal path unless a large cast is a necessity (since it does improve atmosphere and give a bit more life to a fictional environment.)

Anime is not better with a bigger cast. It's almost always better when the focus is on just a few characters.

Madoka: 5 mains
Cossette: 2 mains
Eva: 4? mains
Elfen Lied: 2 mains
Ergo Proxy: 2 mains
Death Note: 2 mains
Terror in Tokyo: 4 mains

Small cast doesn't automatically mean better. Garbage is garbage no matter what.

It can but not necessarily. I think it can definitely get confusing like Shirobako in its first few episodes, but I got used to it. Oftentimes in shows with larger casts it's one or several of the side-characters I end up enjoying the most.

As long as characters remain distinct, it's pointless to have multiple characters no one cares about.

With a small cast, there's nothing else to focus on in a show except say 2 or 3 characters (rather typical in many shoujo). There's that big chance that you'd like none of the characters

With a large cast, the focus on specific might be so little that few of them gets any sort of character development. While there might be a small chance of you not liking any character at all, the character you like might be cast aside as unimportant trash (which is always sad)

Best options would probably be to have a short anime that has a small cast so people wouldn't be bored or have a longer anime that sufficiently gives focus on its big cast and allow character development
If your favourite character is Tsutsukakushi Tsukiko, you are my soul mate.

Been a long time since I've been here, I'll continue expressing myself freely and believe everyone should too.

Come now, there's only one character in that show. Shiba Tatsuya, and he's going to 1 shot all the D-listers he runs into in his anime.

Seriously though, it's like putting Superman into anime form with villains from Batman's rogue gallery like Magpie.

I wouldn't say it's better with a bigger cast, nor will I say it's better with a smaller cast. It truly depends on the anime. Like if a series has about 12-15 episodes, it would be better to have a smaller cast so that way viewers don't get overloaded with characters. Now if it's a series that has 100+ episodes than yeah, bring in more characters. But IMO I watch more of the shorter series anyway, so I guess my answer might be a little biased, sorry.

I would say that, generally, yes. The more the merrier, but it really depends on how good an anime is at juggling a large amount of characters.

It's arguable haha
I don't see Ryuk, Mello or Near as MCs because they were all plot devices and didn't have as much focus as the ones I stated before.

depends on how it's done, but in general:

bigger cast = less time for character development for each character
+ increased risk of having characters that are "cardboard cutouts"

bigger cast probably works well in action-type series (ex. Fate/Zero), while a smaller cast is preferred for comedy and romance.

This is a stupid question because you're ignoring genre's.

A romance is gonna have a hard time with a large cast, since the lovey dovey moments will feel small and lack impact.

A historical epic, on the other hand, pretty much requires a large cast.

It's depends on what kind of story you telling, kiddo. A man with a large penis is nothing special if he cannot pleasure his woman correctly with his large penis. Having a large cast does nothing unless the story can use them correctly.
Remember in psycho pass where jovial red head man got pizza'd.

Almost made me cry as hard as when guitar lesbian got pizza'd.

Psycho pass, so deep.
