I would flip. Because then it feels as if the show would suck more since you have no tits to pay attention to, you just realized how much the plot sucks ass.

Take High School DxD for example, without the ecchi and fan service (no nipples as well) would it still be a good show to you because of the story?

Bakemonogatari is another good example. Since it's so dialogue driven, would you be bored without seeing the work of art of their delicious bodies and become bored from all the talking no matter how smart and witty it is?

^ The are all optional questions. The real discussion/question is the title of this thread.

I would still like DxD without Ecchi.

For some shows, though, Ecchi is needed or it simply won't work.

What if? It wouldn't matter much at all. Any show that relies on pure Ecchi isn't a good one.

Alright Sushi, here is the thing. Some eroge type stories could really be just as good without the sex. F/SN is a perfect example. Sure, seeing Saber and Rin like that is kinda awesome but the h scenes are a bit pointless.

On the other hand we have shows like To Love-Ru, which is a fluff comedy centered around awkward situations caused by nudity. So no, without tits, To Love-Ru would suck. Just go look at the first season.

Agreed, and also:

Ecchi is made to have sexual-oriented Fanservice. It wouldn't make any sense to be called ecchi without those, which is all about.

Another one could be Ben-To. Although the Fanservice was actually decent, the lack of it would still be compesated by the amounts of Fights and serious business.

Awww shit, I forgot that I dropped Ben-To a while ago. Don't know which episode I dropped it on though. Might watch it again.

It wouldn't even be ecchi then. Is there no other explanation?

Isn't ecchi the selling point of these shows?

Taking away the ecchi from ecchi shows is like taking away romance from a romance anime. I think it simply won't work.

Well people wouldn't understand what I mean by the thread yeah? When I ask a question about ecchi/borderline H anime, people will understand the sort of anime to discuss about (High School of The Dead, High School DxD, Love Hina.)

It depends on how central the story is in the show. Some of them would stand pretty well on their own (Highschool of the Dead, Sekirei), whereas others would not.

Isn't this like asking "what if an action series had no violence"?

It would most likely fail. Ecchi series usually depend on the fanservice. Now some anime may strive well without it. Take Highschool of the Dead for example. I've heard many people say that if it had less fanservice, among other things, it would've still been decent.

Can't give any examples from my own experiences though. All the ecchi shows I've seen depended on the fanservice. (not counting normal anime with hints of ecchi-ness.)

It depends on the show, if it was a show like To Love-Ru Darkness, it would suck. If it was like Monogatari, it would still work just fine. As long as fanservice isn't the main purpose of the show.

DxD will still be great without that. And a good example is R+V when it discarded fanservice in II it become more awesome.

I think what he is trying to say is that he normally wouldn't be drawn to something just because its ecchi, but high school dxd was interesting enough to allow him to watch it in spite of it. However, if it didn't have the comic relief/lewdness, the show wouldn't have been quite as fun to watch.

Wrong.

It would be just another zombie survival thing with no end in sight.

That's what it is right now, but thankfully we do have the ecchi to stir things up....not to mention one of the greatest characters ever created....Saeko.

An Ecchi without fanservice would be like Tomb Raider without Lara Croft, a.k.a. it would suck.

I'm willing to bet that if Monogatari didn't have it's trademark art, then it would be considered pretty low-tier.

I actually don't like the fan-service in the Monogatari series that much, hence why I gave Nise a 7.

It annoys me to no end when someone implies that people watch Bake for the fan-service.

The art can be considered fanservice. Fanservice doesn't only relate to ecchi and let's be honest, it's art is one it's biggest, if not it's biggest, asset.

I think the art is what draws people to watch it, but the dialogues, the characters and the interactions between them is what makes it worthwhile...
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

The art is not considered fan-service, don't twist the definition. Fan-service include longer fight scenes, extra gore and violence, panty shots, any lewdness or nudity unless it's relevant to the plot. The fans that I know that rated high or have it on their favorite like it for it's dialogue, witty humor, plot, characters and their interesting interactions, the atmosphere, etc. Fan-service and is just a bonus when it comes to the Monogatari series, some people might not think so but hey, to each their own. And the art belongs to the directing of Shinbou Akiyuki and his team, it's not a trademark of Monogatari, it's a trademark of SHAFT.

The Monogatari series have a very solid fan-base in Japan, if people only liked the Monogatari series for it's art or fan-service, the novels wouldn't have been so successful.

Fanservice is anything that is designed to pull fans into the show and/or keep them happy. Therefore, the unusual artstyle of the Monogatari series counts.

What if ultraviolent anime had no violence? What if mature/intellectual anime had no rambling philosophical elements? What if battle shounen had no fighting or character who wants to get stronger? What if a baseball anime had no baseball? Pointless counterfactual question.

I know I can't get enough of those trademark SHAFT slideshow elements, like walls of text, "incomplete animation" messages, recycled cityscape shots, and character stills.

I would have still watched Queen's blade with out all the ecchi or fan service. It actually had a good plot once you got past the boobes and not quite lesbian sex scenes. Then again, that was all that Rebellion was. So.

Also I have a feeling that Eiko would not be a series. I haven't even watched it and I can say that for sure.

Took the words right out of my mouth. What happens when you take <x> elements out of a show made expressly for <x> fans? (x = action, romantic, dramatic, comedic, ecchi, etc.) Garbage.

Though I can kind of see this question having meaning when it's applied to shows that shoehorn their ecchi scenes. It's hard to take a show seriously when you see a panty shot every five seconds, assuming the show wants you to take it seriously.

Although, if you're looking for the opposite (i.e. removal of ecchi = good, regardless of whether or not the show was serious), see Rosario + Vampire (the manga).

Nope , not to me .

I'm a bit of a stupid one so please enlight me how can an "Ecchi" anime can be called "Ecchi" if there is no "Ecchi" in it?

Besides the point , the anime itself is a fanservice......
No fanservice=no anime.

Then they wouldn't be borderline H/ecchi anime. In fact, they wouldn't exist. Some anime solely rely on the ecchi to draw viewers in, and if that's gone, then so is the anime.

Although I think High School DxD would be alright.

HSDXD popularity is because of ecchi , the plot is the most generic one I've ever seen and the ecchiness hides that , take that out and you'll get a SnO without Sakurai's funny moments .

Bake is nonsense with or without the fanservice. The fanservice just makes it more unbearable. Personally some of those shows might have interesting things going for them under the fanservice, but I never watch them through to find out.
