According to an interview manga on Weekly Shonen Jump, Oda Eiichiro revealed that he gets up 5am and works until 2am. He would go on a trip with his family if he had a free time but he has absolutely no day off. He feels happy to be a mangaka when he meets famous mangaka he admires such as Toriyama Akira. What he wants the most now is an interesting idea for the story.

How does he work so much and still have such bad art?

The news isn't the fact that he has nearly no freetime, but the extent of his work. Only three hours of sleep... even Napoleon slept four hours a day, that is an insane pace.

Wonder how long he can keep that up.

It's been known for a long time now that he's a workaholic so not much of a surprise there.
Bet people who complain about his ocasional breaks are feeling like shit right about now.You guys are assholes.
Seriously hope he's not burning out.

1) Art is subjective.
2) His art is unique and creative. From a technical standpoint it is not bad at all.
3) How is this related?

One Pieces has been running for 15 yeas with no long term breaks, right?

I hope he takes care of his own health. We wouldn't want him to get sick, needs a surgery, and One Pieces goes on hold.

I think he went on a one month break to Hawaii with his family at the time skip. Did he really work during that.

I hope One Piece is his last manga, I know he makes enough money off of it, he should retire afterwards(or at least switch to something way easier). I would be so damn sad if he dies, and especially if he dies before finishing One Piece.

How does his body even function?

If you really want to fit in, just put Legend of the Galactic Heroes in your top 5 and have it be the only 10-rated anime in your list.

There's a difference between being retarded and being unique ;)

When you really and honestly love what you do this it hardly seem as a hurdle or sacrifice from his perspective, of course I would agree that he needs some more rest, but again, he loves what he does sincerely so he surely does not see it a work and loves what he does, that's why he can "work" almost non-stop and from our point of view we see as the man not getting any rest, not taking care of himself, etc. His passion and sincere love its easily seen and felt by us fans.

He is young however, that's why he has managed to go like this for more than a decade now.

If anything I feel for his family.

Wow, @ e3veryone saying poor guy and the like. I doubt he feels like that. I bet if you were to tell him rest more, he would say, rest? I am resting and putting my mind at easy while drawing. He is a Genius, geniuses are like that.

It would be easier if you picture him like Eji from Bakuman. who sees based on Oda, see how much he worked non.stop and when asked about resting and having fun his answer surprised his own editor.

I agree with this, specially since he also works with the movie when there is one, which is why there is a lot of breaks.

With the fanbase One Piece has accumulated, I doubt he's got much motivation to try and make his shit look any better.

Is it really hard to ask for any haters to stay...out of OP-related news? What's with people and wanting to downgrade OP? -.-

This may have been an insult , but I will take the other path here and consider it an inquiry.

I personally would like to know that myself. Mainly because:

1. He must have a few assistants, every mangaka does. So he isn't doing it all himself.
2. He does around 17-20 pages a week , which is the norm.

So like people said, whether the art is good or bad is subjective. However level of detail is objective, and a higher level of detail takes more time. And while I love One Piece, I have never marveled at the art of it. On the other hand, there are other mangas like Mahou Sensei Negima for example, while the character design in that was extremely simple, I often wondered to myself how Akamatsu was able to draw such detailed buildings and backgrounds for 1 panel, it must have taken him forever. Air Gear by Ogure had some extremely detailed character designs and action scenes on the other hand. Both of those mangas, while they took frequent breaks, were weekly serialized and also around 20 pages each.

This article suggests that Oda works harder than any mangaka, meaning harder than Ogure and Akamatsu who have very detailed art in comparison. It just makes me wonder, what part of the creative process takes him so much time. As a side note, I can believe he barely sleeps, because only a hallucination induced imagination could produce the oddity that is the world of one piece.

Call me if he's decided to give One Piece the closure it deserves. The people I hate more than people who create short stories with no resolution are people who create LONG stories with no resolution.

LOL You would how much he improved over the past years and how the art gets darker IF you read the series , that is . When it comes to weekly shonen series ,hands down One Piece has he best artwork , every op fans know how the art improved and how unique and creative it is , just look at his colour spreads .

He's said before he has the whole story planned out. You can tell with all the interconnected aspects of the series that it's true...
(He didn't just start OP and went along with it. =.=)

So don't say that. . _ .

And he needs to live long enough to create more even after One Piece!

Please keep healthy, Oda-sensei. :A:

IntroverTurtle: He should hurry. By how he's wasting his body (three hours of sleep, wtf), he's real close to burning out. The only question is when this will happen, or whether it has happened in the past without you guys knowing.

ZoroShiSon: I've decided long ago that I wouldn't touch the manga series.

MM-Rosiie: It's reality. There's so many authors that might have died before fully realizing their works of literature. There's The Wheel of Time series, and in Japan, the Kaze no Stigma series. Zero no Tsukaima's in danger as well, with its author seeking medication for his cancer.
