I just loved this short animation. The theme isen't original but still as beautiful as the other shorts I've seen.
That diving suit was the best thing he could have bought. I thought he looked quite satisfied in the end, I just hope he won't live to build the next floor.

It was amazing. I felt so sorry for the old man that I kept thinking :"Please, no more!" but I couldn't stop myself from watching it through to the end.

I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would, especially because there are so many different ways that one could interpret it. After the first minute I thought the building up of the houses represented how, as humans, we tend to keep trying to run away from our problems and not resolve them, but in the end they'll catch up to us. After watching the whole thing, I have a few other ideas on the meaning. Very nice anime...I think I'll be coming back to it often.

I don't understand how they are people that didn't get this... and i admit this makes me kinda mad. I mean if you really can't feel anything watching this then you'd better start worrying about yourself.. :S

Saying what need to be said and moving on, this was short and more straight forward than some people want to think. There aren't any encrypted codes or high and mighty messages hidden in it. The emotion is right before your eyes. Reminiscense. Of one's life, of one's past that is now burried and has faded under tons of water. The man dives (literally) deeper into his past and his subcontious, where the spaces he used to live where bigger and fuller of life. And that's all in brief. There are many things that can be said about this but they'd better be left unsaid. The movie speaks on its own and it' s always more beautiful for everyone to create their own thoughts about what they experience.

Hmm, I do like this short, but I feel that a lot of the reson shorts like this get such high ratings is because they don't have enough time to fuck it up. It's easier to write a poem than a novel, right? Anyways, what I'm getting at is that this was very well executed, but just didn't have that much substance. You can dig out a couple of metaphors, but they aren't really that interesting. In the end, it works best as a pure slab of nostalgia, which played my emotions in what to me was a rather predictable manner, but to others it made them cry.

One of the best shorts I’ve ever watched in my life. The concept was innovative and perfectly executed, and fits as an analogy of a person’s life. I’ll treasure this little masterpiece for years.

It tugged at my heart-strings, the wave of nostalgia and the feeling of yearning those past moments that’ll never come back anymore… I couldn’t take it. I cried like a baby.
I think, then procrastinate.
Therefore, I am.

I've never seen an Old man swim down old sections of his house that are now under water and re-live those tales.

Great short, one of the best ever.

Me either. Perhaps I need to get out more?

I really dug this as a short animated film. Beautiful visual style, great soundtrack (I think I loved this most of all), and a simple yet touching story. However, I'm not really sure if I want to call this "Anime". Not that that's a bad thing mind you, its just that beyond being from Japan there really isn't anything about this that makes it anime. I think I'll leave it unscored, but it was extremely enjoyable.

That was terribly sad. I just decided to watch it 'cause I had a few spare minutes... Ahaha, I wasn't expecting that.
Excellent. You can see the house showing things like the preciousness of youth and how everything seems so simple when you're younger. The art reminded me of those old national film board of Canada shorts. I like it when they can tell a story without words.

I personally think that it's about time and how you can't stay in one place forever and you have to move on, the water rising and having to build higher. But when you get older you look back on it.

Maybe it's because I'm still young, that this doesn't affect me emotionally THAT MUCH. But, overall, it was really artistic. Without any kind of dialogue, you can feel the emotion in the story and the feelngs of the old man through the whole film. It was a really nice short, I recommend it. :)

its entirely possible that the beginning of Up may have been directly influenced from this short.
"...our faces marked by toil, by deceptions, by success, by love; our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone – has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash – together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” - Joseph Conrad ('Youth')

An animation simple but accurate. A simple story but it also hits the target.
The colors, the movement, the setting, the characters. The house itself is the subsidy, material of their memories.

A gorgeous anime both visually and in metaphors.

I'm crying. ;~; Yes, I'm a baby, but this man had such a beautiful life. The world was so soft and mellow and loving, too, with the colors and the sounds and the mood that engenders. I wish I lived in an environment with that kind of emotional reality. I'd never paint my world so yellow in my mind. His nostalgia is simply wonderful, and I'm still crying. This is a gem.
