Uh, I'm pretty sure Ryougi Shiki is a girl.

Anyway, I was bored to death watching this. I guess I was supposed to read the novels before watching but I can't be bothered to anymore.
Music and animation was nice so 5/10

To be honest it's really hard to rate this movie base on how it delivers the desire information about what's happening around it

When I think of the art BG - the 1st thing that comes to me was Silent Hill

I score it 6/10 but, I might watch the next episode.. the preview is pretty much a promising one

Considering the fact that this was a movie it had so many plot holes. O_o
Could someone please tell me where I can fill these gaps? Further with the series or novel or...?

I was expecting better. The animation is good, the visual quality sucks though... I don't know if the fansubs are to blame or the HD version of this show is just terrible.

It was okay, the animation wasn't really that mindblowing, just better then what you normally find in Anime TV series.

Background details were nice. My biggest complaint was the dialogue and pacing though. Shit just went hardly anywhere, and a lot of the script was absolutely pretentious. Just some hollow metaphors and then analogies about dolls.

I understand that this is only 1 out of 7 movies. But this still could have been better.

It's not bad for this movie. But considering that I didn't read the novel, it's going to be tough for me to understand the actual story. Dialogue was ridiculous as well.

The action was pretty good though. 8/10

I came to this movie without any knowledge about the source story and not even a hint of the synopsis. It was an interesting experience. I won't say that it was difficult to understand because I am assuming that it is introducing concepts that will be further developed in the later movies; all I can say therefore is that the movie is very suggestive.

Maybe its strongest virtue is the visual aspect, though. Very clean and detailed, I loved the colours used in the graphic depiction of the city, the streets, etc. And about the story itself, it shows some twisted concepts about reality, life and afterlife (?) that I hope the later movies will help to put in context.

On the other hand, I found that it dragged a lot in some scenes. The sense of pacing is quite poorly delivered, I understand that a high-concept, rather philosophical show must be contemplative, but that's one thing and another one is being irredeemably slow, which I'd say happens from time to time, specially during scenes that are supposed to be "fast" and adrenalitic, as showing an emotional climax of the character and the story.

In the same way, the dialogues are, at times, vacuous, filled with gratuitous reflections, and also dragged, redundant and, specially during the beginning, incoherent. It gets better as the story starts to make the concepts clear, but in the first scenes it is truly a mess to even realize what are the characters talking about, they seem to fly from one topic to another between phrase and phrase.

I liked it, despite its flaws. As an introductory work it is quite impressive. Hope the following movies are worthy. 7/10

Very pretty, the soundtrack was nice too, but other than that the movie was soul-less. The main character was emotionless and plain, the fight scene, superhuman jumps and fake arm came out of no where. Can't say I was disappointed because I came in with no expectations, but I sure hope the rest of the movies are better and help to explain this one.

haven't read the manga, but from this episode I will be!! Absolutely stunning art work i mean seriously that was beautiful! The soundtrack was almost chilling, gave me goosebumps at some points. Not a lot to say story wise but I still have 6/7 more movies to go so that is easily rectified 8/10 for me, just hope it carries on this way.

Completely disagree, I'm not even sure if you paid attention on this part whatsoever. The exposition was sound, it brought on the plate the very tone of the series and did it with some grace while also providing a tragic perspective to it (most notably through the tragic antagonist). Apart from the exposition, while I know that Kara no Kyoukai is very much a series that's more show than tell, neglecting to even realize Shiki's reactions and expressions of concern is just plain ridiculous as even I noticed this during my first watch and had to question her relationship with the boy (which gets nicely answered in the second movie). Also this entry in the series was necessary in establishing the supernatural/fantastical nature of this series so that it doesn't seem forced later on. When you say you came in with no expectations I can't help but feel as if you just watched this series without even knowing about its genre. True the fake arm gets explained later, but this part of the series is more concerned in setting the tone of the series and I actually find it refreshing that it doesn't start off by spoon-feeding its audience. I find your claims of being "open" to this series as a complete understatement considering how most of your critiques come across as having really specific expectations for this series to begin with.

Why are those girls committing suicide again? Why is Shiki fighting those ghosts?

As far as I can remember, she wants someone to "fly" for her sake, and she wants that person to take her away. In the last scene (after the credits), they revealed that she had an incurable disease, and that she's been in the hospital for 10 years. Obviously, those ghosts that Shiki fought are the ghost of the highschoolers who died. Shiki fought the girl because she took that Mikiya's soul.. I think the reason is because Mikiya's the only person who noticed her, and she thought that he could take her away.

oooo this is making sense now.
actually, after i watched the movie, i read the synopsis again, and somehow it started making sense to me. guess you can't just simply watch this movies, you have to discuss it with someone.

though i am liking shiki's personality when she interacts with miyaki. its kind of a soft quiet tsundere, and thats MUCH better than the loud, obnoxious and ungrateful tsundere's that somehow taken the anime world.

The story looks so confusing and boring. I was almost sleeping when watching this, it is boring

I really surprised that people here are giving this anime a high score just because of the "great" animation.

For those who watched later episodes, does this get any better ?

The story isn't confusing, it's actually rather simple (though I assume you're watching it through the fansubs, which admittedly, has some bad phrasing in the dialogue). Most of the highlights in this movie come from the philosophical exposition and even those seemed to escape your attention.

It's one episode of an entire series, and honestly you should take it that way. If you didn't like the atmosphere, themes and narrative style, then I doubt you'd find anything to like in this series. Granted, I always recommend for anyone who watches this anime to watch it up until the 3rd movie, and if by then you still find yourself not liking it, then obviously it's not something for you.

So no, I didn't give this anime a "high score" because of "great" animation, I gave it a high score because it works as a great introductory episode to the world of the series, but the fact that it's coupled with a great soundtrack and beautiful animation also helps.

The movie was simply set in the middle of the plot. Mikiya (boy) found himself drawn in by the Fujou Building, but he gets knocked out (it's assumed that Kirie Fujou, the "ghost-like" floating girl, had taken his soul/will). Kirie does the same to other girls to lure them out so as to become friends with them, but they always ended up dying due to the imbalance in their minds which drove them all to suicide. Shiki (girl with knife) discovers about this whole thing and pretty much settles it throughout the movie.

The 2nd movie does just that. The whole first half of the series is purposely done out of order, it's done for narrative purposes and something to take note of when getting into the series.

I don't understand why people complain about the chronology of this series all the time. It's an interesting way to deliver the plot of this story and reward viewers for making their own connections. Apparently some people have never seen films like Inception, Momento, or most Quentin Tarantino films.

You probably shouldn't be calling the story "dumb" just yet. Despite the films being separated the series is very much supposed to be taken as one whole.

Oh, yeah, your watching it in chronological order. To each his own, I guess. Still, typing "story is dumb" isn't exactly convincing criticism.

Well, I have to unproudly admit that I haven't seen those movies and yes, the story line although not very complicated still was quite difficult maybe not to follow but to understand every detail. That probably leaves many ppl confused which, as I believe, was intended to make them interested in the second one. Still reading those comments helps a lot.

And yes, the animation get you that feeling that you can basically get drown in the world of the movie and "float" in it. Just love it.

Having that said I would score it 7-8/10, but the next one might change it.

6/10 - Not bad, not that great either. But I fairly enjoyed it.

It's kind of pretentious for such a simple idea. I expected more than just a "hospital girl kills bunch of people" plot. Animation and sound are pretty nice. It's similar to what I would expect from Madoka.

Will watch the rest of the movies later~

I wouldn't go so far as to say pretentious (pretentious implies undeserved assumption of dignity or importance). I mean, it didn't really try to pretend to be anything else and how it just went straight into character introspection (mainly on behalf of Shiki and Kirie) than a typical dangling horror mystery. Also the music probably sounds familiar to you because well..... it's basically the same composer as Madoka. ^_^
