THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.----------------------------------------
Just saw the first episode, and I feel rather so-so about it. It was very slow moving and throughout the whole episode they taunt you with fight scenes but they never really happen. The storys rather a blur at the moment, or maybe I just wasn't paying enough attention.. anyways looking forward to the next episode and I'm hoping they'll give us a real fight scene next time.

Edit: I almost forgot, does anyone know why I can't add this one to the status of "Watching" , apparently it hasn't aired yet but the date on the anime page is that it aired on Jul 1st.

You can't put on the watching list because it hasn't started yet.
It seems this is just a preview episode. That's probably the reason the plot is so blurry. The real air date is 19 July. I'm also not sure this is the "real" episode one...
You probably should change the name of the topic to something "preview episode" so it won't cause confusion in the future :)

Anyway, looks like it's gonna be a pretty gory show. I like the animation, since it's not your regular animation style. To bad those translations seemed a little odd at times, but that's probably because the VA's are using some sort of old japanese from what I could grasp.
It was interesting, although there was no real action. More comments when the show actually starts.

Yeah, it appears that your right. After looking around a little more I saw that this is technically a "special preview episode" according to this http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=7811 . The fansub and RAW's are a little misleading, claiming that this is episode 1. I suppose this should have it's own entry in the DB since it is a "Special".

But I'm actually glad to find this out in regards to the actual show since that episode was so slow moving, and it just seemed like an odd start to a gory action anime.

It's slow and a little confusing, but it looks like it'll be pretty interesting once the show actually gets going. And I really like the artistic style, so that helps.

It looks very promising. The animation is amazing, and the gore will add to the samurai story. Finally a good samurai anime instead of the usual harem/comedy that we've been getting.

Historical anime tend to make me run to the wiki every two seconds, but, Shigurui looks like it has potential to deliver some brutal, brutal samurai action and that makes me very happy on the inside.

Also hoping the pacing improves...

From what I've seen, the production values of this show are amazing. But that's to be expected since it is produced my Madhouse.

Even though I had a little bit of the problem with the pacing of the episode, I'm still very optimistic that things would turn out great. Everything else is something to look forward to because it has this feeling of authenticity.

The thing is, the preview episode matches the first episode exactly.

So basically, Preview Ep = Ep 1

And so If we've seen the preview ep, we can say we've also seen ep 1 of the series on our list?

I'm starting to think so.. even if ANN says differently I think we should go with how the subbers are doing it. Also, I think I confused the shit out of myself writing my last post there.

*shock* going against the almighty ANN; we're in for divine punishment

However, AniDB does agree with us:

http://anidb.info/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=5108

HOWEVER, However:
If you remember/watched 'High School Girls', the special preview ep was actually the first half of ep 1, so it could be the same here, maybe ep1 actually finishes the fight

I've changed the discussion's name back to Ep 1, like it was at first. Doesn't seem like the "Special" entry serves a purpose anymore I'll see if I can request that it is removed.

Anyways, episode 2 is out. Get downloading!

I unno but i like pretty pictures... and this is one of the prettiest pictures i've seen in a while. Art style reminds mine alot of afro samurai (minus the afros) Sure it does seem to appear real long and slow but if you pay attention to all the tiny details (pink lips, strands of loose hair blowing in the wind, the different patters of ALL the kimonos/yutakas[?], the sun reflecting off a wooden sword, i could go on forever), I got really drawn into the story.

Oh and the sound is top notch... gravel parting w/ pressure or the cicada bumping into the wodden pillars before landing on it, i rushed tiny footsteps of a daughter of a noble, the wet slap of a freshly cut body part, and the music is just friggni mood setting as hell.

One thing does confuse me tho...

The bloodshed does help alot too. It's been a while since a "bloody" good anime has come along.

Amazing! I love the art, the era and almost everything about this anime. I'm in love with "Samurai executioner" and "Lone wolf and cub" mangas and this one seems pretty similar to those two.

Im glad they did an anime adaptation for this , i first discovered the series through manga, but since im not a reader i wouldnt have finished in manga form.. But now im intrigued to continue watching this, an excellent job done on all aspects: animation, music, atmosphere all perfect.
And it also gives me that strange feeling of anxiety when someone does something that could potentialy hurt him/someone else (like the blind samurai grabbing his sword with his toes, what if he missed ? :S)
That said , it has really gotten me into the mood, gotta watch some more.

Well, that was... weird. The whole atmosphere make you unconfortable, but I can't put my finger on the reason.

Vauuu! This slow tempo makes it just perfect, it's so intense, you could slice the tension in the air...You actually become aware that someone is about to die!!! What a difference from other anime, where fantasy characters with oversaized swordsweapons appear ridiculous.... So far i'm giving it 9!

More of a preview than an actual episode. A little hard to follow, but not bad. I loved the pacing, atmosphere, and ambient soundtrack. It sets the tone for what seems to be a really dark and savage series.

It seems really cool so far
It was giving me some Texhnolyze vibes throughout, it reminds me of it a lot, especially with the lighting
The art direction was very unique and cool, it also reminded me of Texhnolyze
While the pacing seems slow when you look at it, it still stays entertaining and suspenseful the whole time, I somehow enjoyed every moment of the episode even though not much happened
With that, I think this show has a lot of potential to be great, I heard it's one of the best anime ever, so I have high hopes for it.

The minimalism is great, reminds me a bit of Texhnolyze.
Some scenes just looked utterly disturbing and grotesque, but thats exactly what made this episode strangely intriguing.I also think that it's a rather 'realistic' approach,as I can actually imagine things being like that during this time period.
I heard some really negative things about this anime, but the start was okay.
