Jujutsu Kaisen

Idly indulging in baseless paranormal activities with the Occult Club, high schooler Yuuji Itadori spends his days at either the clubroom or the hospital, where he visits his bedridden grandfather. However, this leisurely lifestyle soon takes a turn for the strange when he unknowingly encounters a cursed item. Triggering a chain of supernatural occurrences, Yuuji finds himself suddenly thrust into the world of Curses—dreadful beings formed from human malice and negativity—after swallowing the said item, revealed to be a finger belonging to the demon Sukuna Ryoumen, the King of Curses.

Yuuji experiences first-hand the threat these Curses pose to society as he discovers his own newfound powers. Introduced to the Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School, he begins to walk down a path from which he cannot return—the path of a Jujutsu sorcerer.

Jujutsu Kaisen has been on my watch list for quite some time, as my brother hasn't said enough good things about it, and the sequels that follow. Worth watching? Yup, especially if you like the Shounen stuff.

Story & Characters: Jujutsu Kaisen starts out a little bit too "anime" like, in that we have a young character gain powers, just kind of out of nowhere. Yuuji Itadori is with his two clubmates in their supernatural club when they start talking about paranormal stuff. Then what follows is that he gets mixed up with a number of supernatural occurrences. Wanting to save ... his clubmates, he opts to eat a piece of a the old "King of Curses", which is said to usually destroy the user... until we see how Itadori not only survive, but gain access to cursed powers. No matter how "to the book" it is, Itadori at least has characteristics to go with it, in that he has the most caring heart of anyone. He always wants to be there for his friends and is keen to learn more about his newfound strength. He's well aware that his old life is gone and, not only takes on, but embraces what's to come. Now, instead of boring old high school, Itadori is enrolled in the Jujutsu High School to become a sorcerer.

Satoru Gojou is kind of the Kakashi to this series' Naruto, in that he oversees what Itadori does, while being scary strong in itself. And it still makes for some real fun fights. I'm sure there's more to come, but seeing this guy fight is a pleasure in itself. There's not a ton of story for him, but he's probably one you save for later anyway. Megumi Fushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki make up the other two rookies in the high school, and both are fantastic characters. Fushiguro has a very different fighting style to the other two, and MAPPA REALLY flexes their animation prowess with him. Aside that, I'm not terribly attached to him yet. He puts on a bit of an attitude, mostly because of his past, but is super confident in his powers. Nobara is really well written, in that she doesn't really stand to be the usual "female" character. She's extremely headstrong and kind represents what good writing to female characters can do.

There's no real obvious villian here, but more so, a bunch of them - likely setting up for future seasons. Suguru is probably the big one, but his lackies make for very fun fights. They have personality, but they're pretty typical lacky bahaviour. Mahito was probably my fabourite because his twisted personality REALLY pushes some of our characters. I was a big fan of his arc, as well as the few minor characters around them.

In case it wasn't obvious, this series does a really good job at making us care for a lot of side characters. Late into the series, we have an arc that introduces a set of characters that also go to Jujutsu High, and they are fantastic. Mechamaru, Panda and Toudou all have fantastic writing around their characters, backstories and how they go about their life. I love all three of these guys and I really hope they build upon them more. Even lesser ones like Kasumi and Momo are extremely entertaining. The story bits are built around them in a fun and entertaining way.

Outside of character related build-up, much of the story around Sukuna, the King of Curses, is mostly on the side. Sure, we have our antagonists fighting for those pieces too, but that's not really our focus. It's kind of like all of the Marvel movies in the Infinity Arc. We're aiming to get to the point where we're talking about the Infinity Stones, but we are getting there at a pretty casual pace. And that's perfectly fine for a franchise that is building up the hype. They do that very well. (Story: 8/10, Characters: 9/10)

Art: When you have MAPPA involved, your series is probably going to look pretty good, and they certainly work well here. Fights look amazing, steady scenes look consistent and everything else works well together. Huge fan here. (10/10)

Sound: This series has a really good OST, and that's even comparing that to some of the best ones that I've heard in the last few years. Voice cast absolutely rules, and it's a bit of a reminder what top-notch series like this brings in. Robbie Daymond (Fushiguro), Anne Yatco (Kugisaki) and Xander Mobus (Toudou) are probably my favourites here, but the cast is littered with big names - Ray Chase, Allegra Clark, David Vincent, Kaiji Tang - list goes on. Adam McArthur (Itadori), hilariously, is the one name I don't know much about, but was solid. (9/10)

Overall: Jujutsu Kaisen is a really strong start to a series that seems to be going the mile. It's funny, flashy and exciting, all at the same time. The Shounen stuff stays strong with this entry and I'll likely be back to watch more... after this insane Summer 2025 season wraps up. (9/10)

Mixed Feelings

Jujutsu Kaisen kicks off like it’s gunning for “Shonen of the Decade” status: cursed spirits, snappy action, characters with just enough edge to make you think, “Okay, this could get interesting.” The first arc throws you right in, all speed and swagger. For a while, it’s fun to ride along. Then the cracks start to show. The story starts stacking tragedies like it’s competing in a grief Olympics, except half of them feel more like plot conveniences than emotional gut punches. The big moments are there, but they rarely land with the weight the series thinks they do. Structurally, it’s like watching someone build a ... beautiful tower out of Jenga blocks. Impressive at first, but you can tell they’re pulling pieces at random without checking if the whole thing might collapse. Characters who should have been the emotional backbone either vanish too soon or never get the depth they deserve. Yuji’s supposed growth feels like watching a fast-forwarded YouTube tutorial, you see the before and after, but the middle part where you actually learn something? Missing. The side cast ranges from “could’ve carried their own spin-off” to “exists purely to die dramatically,” and the show doesn’t always seem to know which is which. The worldbuilding? Let’s call it “strategically vague.” We’re told just enough to follow the current fight, but not enough to feel like the rules are solid. It’s as if the series is afraid that if it explains too much, the cool factor might deflate, which, ironically, makes it feel less grounded. Now, credit where it’s due: the visuals and animation absolutely slap. MAPPA clearly didn’t come here to half-ass the fights. Every battle is fluid, dynamic, and dripping with style. The music hits hard when it needs to, and the voice acting is sharp, carrying even the weaker scenes with conviction. This is a series where the technical team is working overtime to sell you on moments the script doesn’t always earn. Moral value? That’s trickier. Sometimes it’s about selflessness, sometimes about vengeance, sometimes about embracing the chaos, it shifts like a fortune cookie writer who’s working through a breakup. Enjoyment depends entirely on whether you can switch off the part of your brain that asks, “But… why, though?” If you can, it’s a wild ride. If not, you might find yourself watching purely for the animation and waiting for the plot to catch up. Rewatch value is… well, let’s just say the fights hold up. Everything else? Maybe not so much. But if you’re here for spectacle over substance, Jujutsu Kaisen will deliver. Just don’t expect the story to exorcise all your narrative demons. Spoiler. Gege is the true villain.

I don’t get why something unoriginal becomes so popular. I don’t mind if people enjoy it, but I just don’t understand. Despite taking so much 'inspiration' from other anime, at least try to hide it, author. I know being completely original is hard since there are already so many anime with the same formulas and tropes, but still.

For example, when you watch the first episode of Jujutsu Kaisen, it feels very similar to the first episode of Bleach. Of course, it’s not 100% the same, but it’s too obvious. Here’s why: a random curse or hollow appears and attacks Ichigo’s sister and Yuji’s friend; both ... are then saved by Megumi/Rukia, who come from the jujutsu society/soul society; and the main protagonist gains power through a sword/finger. The similarities are just too clear.

Story/Plot: Too basic. After Yuji gets power from the finger, of course he gets involved with the Jujutsu society, and then he must find the other Sukuna fingers. It feels like when Team 7 in Naruto had to find a missing cat for their first mission—very basic storytelling.

Characters: Yuji is a main protagonist you can find in many other battle shonen anime, but done better elsewhere. Gojo is also the “cool sensei” type that you can find in other anime, but again, done better.

Soundtrack: Just okay.

Overall: This series is a very basic battle shonen anime, and you can find older series that did it better. I don’t mind if people enjoy it, but seeing this anime become so popular, despite taking a lot of aspects from older series, feels pretty ironic.
