On a continent ruled by chaos, the Lords have the power of a holy seal that can calm the chaos and protect the people. However, before anyone realizes it, the rulers cast aside their creed of purifying the chaos, and instead start to fight each other for each other's holy seals to gain dominion over one another. Siluca, an isolated mage who scorns the Lords for abandoning their creed, and a wandering knight named Theo, who is on a journey to train to one day liberate his hometown, make an everlasting oath to work together to reform this continent dominated by wars and chaos.
What is going on with the pacing of this? Seriously, they are either going too fast or going too slow. First 3 episodes were slow without any discussion or any explanation of the events happening. Episode 4 comes out, everything starts going way too fast, nothing makes sense, there's no correlation nor coherence between each scene. It almost feel like the director wants this to end fast.
This show is almost like those people that only want action scenes in each episode, because all we see is them having a war with barely to any explanation of what's going on. All of this accompanied with
futile main characters that can't make a single strategy.
The art department is not good, but not bad either. For some reason, they are using way too much CGI for a 2d anime. The fights we see are just generic ones between knights and mages, althought most action scenes between the characters of interest were good. The design of the characters resemble the ones introduced in the novel, which is something remarkable.
As far as this goes, they aren't doing anything with the story, just introducing new wars between factions, introducing new characters, they don't explain anything, there isn't a single backstory or any sign of development, this series has 24 episodes, but the way it's going every episode is going to be the same, and i'm not up for that, so i might drop this one.
This story is special for one reason. It's that it has one of the Best girl MC's this season but at the same time somehow has one of the worst characters this entire season.
First let me start with Theo.... Fucking Theo is probably the most annoying character this season. The amount of dick sucking this guy get's is ungodly believable. Right from the start people are already praising him or some shit. If he wasn't in this then the rest of the show would be a lot better.
While yes i do feel that the chick in this is one of the best MC's of
this winter season. It kind of sucks when you realize that she isn't really the main focus and we are just getting a view of what a chick in harem see's. Cause of course she is falling for Theo.
If this show was just about her as the MC and everyone else is a side character i think this would be better. If they still want her to have some romance then they should do one of the girls in this sense they tease it enough.
Just about every female in this is enjoyable and much more enjoyable then Theo. Even one of the villains ( Some type of witch or something) Is easily better then the god awful Theo. I want to see him die. Never had a show made me want a MC to die within the first 20 minutes.
Only thing other then having a good Female MC this show has going for it is the animation. It's defiantly the best part and the action is really good.
*Sighs* I really didn't want to come back to this review. I thought that i'd already said my piece and not much else would change.
Well fuck me because episode 9 is where this dumpster fire truly shines.
First let me start out with the biggest complaint i had originally. That is Theo.
Within the 1st episode he was already being praised and people acted as though he was a god. Was made only worse when you realize that the only likable person in this ( Siluca ) Is actually just a harem girl tbh. She for no reason falls in love with Theo and is immediately claiming he is such an awesome person. Well my complaint still stands and if anything it's even worse later on.
Now what really got me to come back and update this review is the last two episodes 8 & 9.
Episode 8 we actually get something of substance and interest. That is the lead up to the now canceled Royal Marriage. I honestly was liking the story between the bride and groom. They are both interesting and likable. Then we are introduced too one of the dumbest things i'v seen in anime for awhile.
Turns out that after the 1st attempt to stop the Royal Marriage, The Bride decided not to go through with it for what ever reason. Later we find out it's because people who were against the marriage that attacked. Let me say that again. She cancel's off a Royal Marriage that would benefit not only her kingdom but both kingdoms because someone that was against them on the day of the wedding. It's made even worse because she and the groom actually love each other. This honestly makes no sense and i'm.. I.. Just can't wrap my head around how idiotic this shit is. She cancels a Marriage with someone that she loves and wouldn't just benefit the Bride and the Groom but both Kingdoms. It even took me a little bit to try and comprehend this shit.
Doesn't even make sense later on when the Union ( With her Ex-Groom in it ) Offers a peace talks with the Alliance ( Led by the Bride ) She refuses it for no reason. The Alliance has already lost considerable ground and the Union is the one wanting to end the war. This lady who was an interesting character on the lead up to the wedding has now turned into an idiotic villain that has no reason for doing what she does.
Oh boy was this just an annoying piece of shit episode that honestly made me more mad then any other show has ever made me from the sheer idiocy and senseless acts.
The Bride that i mentioned. She was a really nice character and actually cared about people and was really nice. But now she is hear committing war crimes. She literally does it too. She uses Miasma to flush out any resistance in the caste she is attacking.
Later on we are given the thing that just ruined any hope of my enjoying this show. The queen gives her body to get some guy ( That has been killing her own troops and she even knows it ) On her side. It comes off a very rapish when she is laying on the ground crying while some guy is screwing her. This literally fucking pisses me off. This dude isn't even pledging loyalty or anything so he could immediately go about killing everyone off after he is done with something that is pretty much raping her.
I can't get over this. This show has no redeeming qualities besides some nice animation and character designs.
Why couldn't we just get a story about the Royal Marriage instead ? I find the idea of it interesting enough and they are both likable characters and it's infinitely better then the dumpster fire that we got with this. I'd rather see to for fiance's now leading two different kingdoms that has hostilities with each other. In the end have both of them marry. It baffles me that they are able to make such an interesting side story while it being placed in this sub par show. It's even more amazing how they managed to fuck it up.
This show tries to act emotional and sad but in the end it's just fucking retarded. I've heard the Novel and Manga are actually pretty decent. I don't know and this show isn't making me want to to and read them any time soon. Just a shame with how much wasted potential there is. Maybe that's why i am honestly pissed off with this anime. Wasted Potential is worse then no potential.
I have one word for the creators of this show: PACING!
I don't think I've ever seen a show that had so little grasp of how pacing should be done in a form of entertainment. One episode we're watching a full war scene where every detail is being focused on with flashy fights, decent choreography, and plenty of magic. The very next will have any battles just skimmed over as "yeah some people died, here's a 5 second clip of people dying." One episode will go deep into the politics and bonds present in the show, then it switches to either skimming over
important things or it changes back over to thinking it's an action show. Pick a speed, and pick a theme to tell your story, don't just mash everything you've got into a pile and call it a tale.
Story aside, most of the characters are as unbelievable as they can possibly be. The MC Siluca has the loyalty of a squirrel that's found someone with a nut it wants (other MC: Theo). Here we have an extremely talented mage who is already setup for fame and fortune throwing it all away to dedicate their entire life to a random stranger they found on the side of the road...what? Theo is a complete mess of a character as, again, the authors can't seem to decide what he is. Is he naive, is he smart, is he dumb, is he aiming for the top, or is he simply looking to accomplish his goals? You can't make a good character by answering YES to all of the above!
On top of all of this the story suffers from several elements being shoehorned in for no reason at all. Why does Siluca wear revealing clothing? Because she was wearing them at the start of the show and is apparently incapable of ever changing them, despite constantly complaining about them and how everyone else leers at her. Why did we need a sex scene between two people that have never even met before? Yeah, remember the pacing issue? Five seconds of people dying in a horrible battle for territory, but here's a full timeslot dedicated to watching the two opposing rulers banging each other under the moon simply because he asked. No reason, nothing added to the story, guy just walks up and says "I know we're enemies but I want to have sex with you." Who wrote any of this and thought it made a single degree of sense?!
This show is a complete and utter mess, which is a shame as the art is actually pretty good. The crests and clothing are colorful and really add to the atmosphere of the setting. Too bad it's only dolling up nonsensical characters and awkward scenes. The only reason I'm still watching this at all is out of sheer curiosity of where this trainwreck is going to finally stop.
I'm giving 2/10 just for the sake of art and sound.
The Anime showed some potential on how characters and story can grow in the first couple of episodes. But then everything went down the hill in my opinion.
It was going too fast but I still had the feeling that can still turn into a masterpiece, believing the potential in it.
But After a couple of episodes, whatever the way characters or story turned out in this anime, (currently on 9th) diminished my will to continue watching it.
Basically : No Connection between actions,
Poorly expressed characters and their reasons.
I don't oppose some angel character turning into a total demon. But in this anime, there's just not enough factors and events to understand why things turned out like this. I don't care what will happen in the end.
Might be spoiler but I don't think that is since it's the very first episode of the anime : I managed to ignore first events such as when bride leaves the groom just because some third party jackass ruins it, even the wedding meant to benefit both sides and bring peace, but that was just all bull feces.
In these opening weeks of the Spring 2018 anime season, Steins;Gate 0 starts off as the by far highest rated anime, although Megalo Box is the new heavy hitter if we look past sequels. This and more in the opening edition of The Seasonal Quarterly.
