SynopsisIt isn't the world you know. There wanders a girl with jet-black hair, ebony clothes, and a strikingly blue, glowing eye. Her name is Black Rock Shooter. With a huge cannon in hand, she throws herself into a fierce battle...
Meanwhile, in another world, middle-school student Mato Kuroi is drawn to Yomi Takanashi, her classmate with an unusual family name. Mato does her best to talk to Yomi, who just won't open up. Yu Koutari mocks her best friend Mato's efforts but at the same time, supports her. Mato also finds herself surrounded by other colorful characters at school, like the eccentric school counselor, Saya Irino, and the hot-blooded captain of her club club, Arata Kohata.
Then, one day, the window of opportunity opens. After Mato sees that Yomi has her favorite picture book, "Li'l Birds At Play", they strike up a conversation and Mato is invited to come over to Yomi's house. There, they gradually break the ice, until a girl in a wheelchair appears. This is Yomi's best friend, Kagari Izuriha...
Two worlds. Mato and Black Rock Shooter. This is the story of their "pain".

When watching Black Rock Shooter OAV, I remember seeing the original HUKE mv and thinking, "Simple. Makes sense."
Then the TV came in. I was first of all shocked by all the changes, then I was surprised the story had taken a different turn, and then came the new characters added. What had happened to the original animation I had fallen in love with? There was a bunch of mixed emotions as I had such high expectations. And that was only the first half of the first episode.
And then I watched the first one. And then the second. I was literally hooked.
Why?
First of all, for only thirty minutes of animation, it was well put together! Everything was clear and I didn't have a headache by the end of each episode. I was just ready for the next one.
The animation helped with that as well. The fights after all, are nothing to over look, the 3D hanging between CGI and 2D. It's entirely too engrossing.
Second, the suspense killed me. What was going to happen? Who was going to do what? The story was so interestingly new and made me want to discover more about it. What was this other world, how did it work and in what ways were these girls truly connected to it? My questions were all answered in a way I was completely satisfied with. So far, nothing has been left out for me that would keep me unable to comprehend the story.
Third, I wanted to say, THIS IS MIDDLE SCHOOL! There's supposed to be DRAMA! And is there Drama! With a capital D! It makes me enjoy the luxuries of being an adult in my own world, because I would never want to grow up as a young girl in the world of BRS! This was especially increased by the latter episodes.
Anyways, I believe that this anime is one of the more enjoyable art pieces in Japan that I have found over the last few years to watch. Constantly, disappointment has thwarted my experience over and over again, causing me to become disinterested and to hate the new tier of anime being released. But BRS is a nice start to the year, and I hope more anime will continue to follow it's example.
Interesting characters, diverse plot line, wonderful effects, and a great story, Black Rock Shooter TV has taken my cake.

Black Rock Shooter…
Remember that time when a band named Supercell made a hit song using Hatsune Miku for vocals? The music video to accompany it was quite interesting, too…
What about the OVA based off of this music video? Remember that?
Anybody play the video game for the PSP?
Well, I’ve experienced all three of those mediums. I’ve seen the music video, watched the OVA multiple times and have played the PSP game.
If you may, I was quite excited for the TV series that was announced some time ago. That is, until I watched it…
Have you ever watched something with extremely high hopes and expectations, only to have them destroyed and thrown down to your feet? If you’re like me and the other masses, you probably tried to find the good out of your ruined hopes. “Well, it had good ‘this’ and decent ‘that’…”
This is exactly how I felt about BRS TV… I can’t say the OVA was this oh-so-amazing anime, but I was entertained by it a lot. I loved the art, the action, the cute girls, and so on. It had a lot of problems, but that’s for another review at another time…
What does BRS TV have to offer?
Story: 3/10
It’s a mess, plain and simple. The OVA’s story was quite a mess, too, but at least it didn’t make you want to kill yourself after every episode. Then again, the OVA was one episode long… and maybe it was for the better, too, because this TV series has the most screwed up, depressing, train-wreck of a story of the winter 2012 season, in my opinion.
We have the same characters brought over from the OVA (none of the video game characters or story made it into the TV series, unfortunately…) as well as the same setting. A girl meets another girl who she thinks is cute or something, so they talk and become friends. Our main character, Girl A, actually has a life, so Girl B gets jealous of Girl A’s friends. Not to mention, Girl B has a sadistic and schizophrenic blonde friend who hates Girl A… Then, Girl A’s friend, Girl C, enters the picture and everybody gets jealous of each other and quarrel in a heap of hormone-filled, angtsy lesbian love-triangles… or something.
Unknown to these angsty tweens, their “alternate selves” are in an alternate world, participating in all-out death matches… or… something.
Still kind of sounds like the OVA, right? Well, you’re wrong!
Enter the pedophile-of-a school counselor. All I can tell you is that she’s giving these girls false advice so their alternate selves keep fighting. DUN-DUN-DUN~ I wonder why!
Okay, besides all of that, every episode is full of depressing dialogue and cat-fights.
The reason I give it a mere 3/10 is because of how nothing ever makes sense. One moment these girls are friends; the next moment their crying and having angsty cat-fights; the next next moment they’re fighting each other in an alternate world.
TALK ABOUT PLOT!1!... *snicker*
Art: 6/10
Well, not what I was expecting for the art. I absolutely LOOOOOOOVED the art in the OVA. If anything, that’s what the OVA had going for it. Where did that beautiful art go, though? All the characters have these… chubby faces. Also, the alternate-world Black Rock Shooter fight scenes we were all waiting for are animated with CGI… And everybody knows that mixing CGI into a 2D world is the smartest idea ever!!
Wrong. We all hate CGI, Japan!
Okay, that was a generalized statement, and I personally don’t mind CGI if it’s done properly and doesn’t look like trash.
Honestly, the CGI isn’t terrible (*cough/lol* Mirai Nikki *cough/lol*), but it wasn’t expected or necessary… The CGI-scenes are actually my favorite moments on this anime…
Anybody remember that French cartoon Code Lyoko? No, not Code Geass… That obviously wasn’t French.
In Code Lyoko, the 2D characters would transfer themselves into this alternate-world, and when they did, everything went CGI on us…
That’s what BRS reminds me of… 2D one second, 3D the next.
I’m not a fan.
Lastly, the OP animation is friggin’ cool… seeing all these weird, colorful CGI girls prancing about and killing each other.

Highest point of the anime~
Supercell’s everywhere these days. I’m thinking about bookin’ ‘em for my next little shindig I have. Do they do birthday parties, too?
That aside, I like Supercell. Nice music.

I love the original Black Rock Shooter song and music video, despite the fact I’m not a fan of Vocaloid (you may now mark “not helpful”). I'm glad they used this song for the OP... and the opening animation is great~

Remember those cute girls we knew in the OVA? Well, while they’re still in middle school, they’ve become hormone-filled brats, and they love to cry and yell at each other… and then try to commit suicide and kill each other.
Not to mention, they’re all lesbians (w00t), and they have a scary-lolicon-lesbian school counselor, did I mention?
‘Nuff said.

Oh boy… My biggest let down this season, and maybe even the year (being that I was anticipating this show for a long time now).
There are points I liked (the CGI world) and points I loathed (everything else besides the music). The problem is that I mostly loathed just about everything…
It’s not that I hate the show, actually… It’s just a disappointment to see wasted potential, and I know some of you fans of the OVA will agree with me.
Now, here's the thing: with every new episode, I still eagerly download it...
It's just that... I like the show, but I don't ENJOY it as much as I wish I could.
Does that even made sense?

Well, then again, if they animated the video game’s story, they probably would have diluted it and pissed all over it like they did with my adorable-little OVA…

While Black Rock Shooter lacks the magical girl theme of Puella Magi Madoka Magica, there are still similarities to be found in certain areas. In their plots, both concern other dimensions or alternative realities that offer a nod to the genres of "dementia" and "psychological". In both BRS and PMMM, epic battles are fought in these other zones, and they are portrayed with a dark and unique art and animation style that varies considerably from the bright palette that is used for the slice-of-life and drama scenes that comprise most of the rest of the series. In addition to this, friendship (and its strength) proves to be a strong theme common to both titles, and it becomes even more heavily evident in the latter half of them. PMMM's art creates a more childlike appearance than BRS, but it, too, explores darker themes of human emotion, desires, and actions, giving the both of them a greater depth than they appear to have, on the surface.

Fantasy world, colorful characters, meets the dark side
The animation is similar but the plot is way different.
An alternate world which endures your grief and a world where you can exchange your life for a wish.
Both stories talk about friendship and that the main characters always attempt to help others without helping themselves. While the best friend of the main character would be in the side line being confused and fights against her.
The difference in the ending is that BRS has a more violence ending compared to puella magi.

BRS deals with friendship between girls just like Madoka. The difference is that Madoka doesn't dwell too much on the melodrama like BRS does and thus performs much better as a series.
Similar focus on a dark story - but BRS manages to be darker, and more violent. The drama is felt more in BRS than Madoka, but both are equally well done.
I find the alternate words presented in both Madoka and Black Rock Shooter very similar in style. Additionally, in both animes the plot revolves around friendship of two girls. Both protagonists are innocent girls, who never had contact with the dark side of life at the beginning.
