Black★Rock Shooter (TV)

While Black Rock Shooter lacks the magical girl theme of Puella Magi Madoka Magica, there are still similarities to be found in certain areas. In their plots, both concern other dimensions or alternative realities that offer a nod to the genres of "dementia" and "psychological". In both BRS and PMMM, epic battles are fought in these other zones, and they are portrayed with a dark and unique art and animation style that varies considerably from the bright palette that is used for the slice-of-life and drama scenes that comprise most of the rest of the series. In addition to this, friendship (and its strength) proves to be a strong theme common to both titles, and it becomes even more heavily evident in the latter half of them. PMMM's art creates a more childlike appearance than BRS, but it, too, explores darker themes of human emotion, desires, and actions, giving the both of them a greater depth than they appear to have, on the surface. read more 

Melodramatic middle school girls' complex 

School girls, drama, alternative world where the battle against evil occurs. MSMM is more magical and psychological, while BRS is more slice of life. 

Fantasy world, colorful characters, meets the dark side 

An alternate world which endures your grief and a world where you can exchange your life for a wish. Both stories talk about friendship and that the main characters always attempt to help others without helping themselves. While the best friend of the main character would be in the side line being confused and fights against her. The difference in the ending is that BRS has a more violence ending compared to puella magi.

Similar focus on a dark story - but BRS manages to be darker, and more violent. The drama is felt more in BRS than Madoka, but both are equally well done. 

I find the alternate words presented in both Madoka and Black Rock Shooter very similar in style. Additionally, in both animes the plot revolves around friendship of two girls. Both protagonists are innocent girls, who never had contact with the dark side of life at the beginning. 

It's hard to explain what the similarities are... But the way they are written, drawn and animated have very similar qualities. Both anime's involve deep emotional stories that are griping. The main themes of always believing in yourself and your friends is also similar. (But they both still have a fair amount of action as well) The most striking similarity however is that the main characters use their timid yet very hopeful and bright personalities to fight the INCREDIBLY sad circumstances that they have to face. 

Both series star an innocent, caring middle-school-aged girl who wants to make everyone happy. Neither Mato nor Madoka know their true power and feel that they are incredibly helpless. A lot of tears are shed in both stories, as the girls try to overcome great conflict, mostly internal. 

Both stories focus on pre-teenage girls and their hardships as they start to mature/gain knowledge about life. The main characters suffer psychological stress from common things such as: friendship troubles, love troubles, etc. While it appears to be a light story at first, both start to develop depth and delve into the darker themes of reality. 

It's hard to exactly write about what is so similar between the two, but they are both psychologically thrilling, main characters are females, and they both go through immense hardships. Both are generally innocent and moe girls whom are forced to learn what the world/universe really is. Both have great friends who help them on their journies.

Similar atmosphere, it seems a naive anime, but it's way more darker (Madoka is really harder then how it seems). The way the color is used in both anime is uncommon and well appreciated. 

Both have similar trama and characters... You only have to see it. But in my opinion BRS is better tan Madoka Magica. 

Same sort of fight perspective for friendship and hardcore twists in the storyline. also girls that fight for the sake of the world they know and some dramatic storytelling with brutal acts. 

Both are essentially really, REALLY dark Magical Girl animes with SUPER heavy themes. If you're familiar with the TV Trope "Breaking The Cutie", that's basically what the MC of both anime go through. The're's a lot of great action in both series, great animation, PHENOMENAL scores, and some incredible, and memorable characters. If you liked Madoka, you'll probably like BRS, and if you liked BRS, you'll probably like Madoka. They're very similar, just that one is slightly darker than the other. 

"Someone out there is fighting for you." Both Black Rock Shooter and Madoka Magica have this similar moral to them. However, they both also have cool battles and hints of yuri in them. And who doesn't like cool battles and hints of yuri? Sure both of these shows get a little messy in the end, but when they're good, they're really good.  

Both shows combine moe character designs with dark themes, psychological aspects and action. 

Both anime are about girls who can enter a very special and surreal area, with a simple wish. The artstyles are a bit different from eachother, but both are very unique. 

Story line is focused on emotional developement of the characters; Both anime are abstract and some may think: "a bit crazy"; Centered around little girls; Both got quality ;) 

The graphics and soundtracks make the entire series amazing works of art! Not to mention the story lines are amazing and slightly demented.  

They will deceive you with their appearances, and trigger your emotions with surprising plot twists, and an extraordinary sequence of events. Both about girls that are fighting for a better world . Both have very unconventional art styles .  

Magical Lesbians 

Black Rock Shooter features a set of middle-school looking girls who lead normal lives by day, but then get sucked into fantasy realms where they battle it out with monsters (and one another). The animation style of Madoka is more colourful, but both feature dark themes underlying these rocky female friendships. The fight scenes are also choreographed beautifully in Black Rock Shooter and Madoka. Despite the seemingly more upbeat atmosphere of Madoka, it is definitely darker and has more heavy metaphors and symbols than Black Rock Shooter. Overall, each anime will constantly challenge the viewer to draw parallels between the real and fantasy worlds, as well as provide enough material to theorize about with other members of each community.  read more 

Both series is Action filled, Drama Anime (an unusual genre combo I could say). Both series' Main Protagonist is bounded by fate, but hesitating on what decision that should make. Both series' Main Protagonist by caring friends. 

Black Shooter and Madoka share similar elements with their story plots. They both involve girls who posses a magical version of their-selves. Both involve working out conflicts that develop within friendships. Both involve addressing the topic of how emotions should be handled and the consequences of handling emotions in a negative way. Both involve fighting in alternate realities. 

Both are surrealistic-psychologycal dramas about relations of girls, both look pretty standart and average from their description but actually are really unique. 

If you like stories about middle school girls going through depression while having characters fighting these two are for you. -They are both anime original stories (BRS being inspired by a vocaloid song) -Both have over the top fights that fit really well with the drama. -Both Madoka and Mato really care about their friends. -The tone of both series are really similar and both osts and animation styles are really good. -Both will take you for an emotional roller coaster. 

They both involve a concept of "there is someone fighting for you and taking on your pain". They both are from the Mahou Shoujou genre, but are more dark and psychological. Finally, both of them have a strong friendship theme. 

Both revolve around young girls friendship, hardships and alternate universes in which they fight as another version of themselves. They both have dark stories an focus on themes of psychological aspects

High-school girls, magic powers and magical world in which they fight the despair and hatred - these things are the main plot for both of the series. These two anime are really dramatical, so watch out for a dose of tears. 

Both shows features themes that are referencing the mahou shoujo genre, but with a twist, both shows has moments when the animation and topics often fluctuates from simple and sweet, to traumatic and dark. 

Both... ...feature a cast of unique, cute and likeable girls. ...have visually impressive, epic fight scenes. ...are very emotional series, focusing on the personal struggles of the characters. Madoka Magica is definitely the superior series, but if you liked it there is a good chance you might like Black Rock Shooter as well. The characters are not as deep and neither is the plot, but it is still a highly entertaining and touching anime. It is also worth watching, if only for the magnificent battles. 

Five girls transforming to fight for their lives, great action scenes, good animation and dark-dramatic scenarii. My favorite anime of all times ! 

Both are dark themed magical girl stories that has a mix of life outside of being a magical girl as well as also the darker realities of what its really like being one too. 

Features magical school girls fighting each other in creepy otherworldly environments. Oh, and they both have a star symbol in the title. 

both shows reveal their true nature trough the storyline great emotional character development unique design aspects I've felt confused while watching both of them, but in a good way. They make you think about the show, asking yourself questions about the events. 

- Girls have a connection with supernatural/other worldly beings. - Girls passing through harsh moments and needing to deal with their personal struggles as well as outside suffering. - Features themes about hope and the point of suffering. - Big twists and turns. - Visually interesting. - Psychological and character focused. 

Both are about magical girls fighting each other in a surreal environment. Madoka Magica is dark and tragic, and Black Rock Shooter is more upbeat and cute, while still maintaining a deep story. 

Both Selector and Black Rock Shooter have a dark aura that permeates the entire show which is linked to wishes being twisted around. Each character is matched up with a color. There is a parallel between the “green” characters, including the fact that the fact they have similar personalities. Both shows are good at making the watcher feel for the characters. 

Weird, dark-ish anime about younger girls battling through avatars, in a sense. Some of the girls have a few screws loose. Both shows just generally have the same feel. 

Both shows are written by the same person (Mari Okada) and thus are very similar by nature. In both shows girls fight for their dreams, realitionships or other personal problems in alternative universes. While in WIXOSS they use card games, in BRS it is super power girl versions of them selves. Both are melodramatic and have a dark atmosphere mixed with SOL and cute girls. 

Both anime feature highly emotional girls, fantasy girls that fight for the sake of those girls, and a story with a creepy and dark psychological undertone. Many of the girls are very lighthearted, yet have very traumatizing situations thrown at them. Some girls are brought to emotional/mental insanity or worse. Some girls are extremely malicious or controlling. Both of the main characters are fairly stoic, hate scary things, but aren't affected by them much. Each of the girls in both anime have a color that represents them and that means something about them. Fights between alter-ego/card girls within both anime have heavy psychological effects on the girls in real life, whether it makes people happier and new friends come together, or if it mentally breaks a girl. Black Rock Shooter definitely seems to have more effort put in to a unique and interesting artstyle, however. Black Rock Shooter has a very colorful fantasy world and fighting, whereas WIXOSS usually only shows a meek, dark, and simplistic battle field and even more simplistic battles. read more 

Girls battling with each other, where they have their real life versions of themselves, and an "avatar" counterpart from another world that does the fighting for them. Both shows involve teenage girls cutting at each others throats, which is quite a thing in anime. Notably, the psychological aspects for both shows are really strong, the girls often struggling from some sort of complex and depression is very prevalent. So if you love seeing girls screaming at one another and hugging their own shoulders weeping in agony, watch BRS and WIXOSS.  

Both have girls experiencing similar dark themes, and both have fighting taking place in an alternate dimension. 

Both involve crying girls. That was a joke; what I really mean is both involve emotional/psychological torment for a bunch of teenage girls. Which results in crying, hence the joke. Unlike BRS, though, which starts off with some fucked-up yandere shit, WIXOSS takes a couple episodes to get to the a) yandere shit and b) unfortunate consequences. Both BRS and WIXOSS have color-coded characters (and the character design, also--Yomi and Hitoe look almost exactly alike, right down to their green motifs, and have similar roles in the story; Akira and Kagari also bear resemblances to each other), with other characters who fight for them in another dimension. The difference is that BRS characters fight because of suffering and WIXOSS characters fight because of a wish or a hope. read more 

Darkness!!! Light!!! the despair over joy both shows can show this really wel. how much you can despair and it also has its light it very fun to watch 

Both are like reality, dreams and nightmares, and battles just on the "other world", not in the real.

While BRS's alternate world is about grief and such, Yumekui merry's alternate world is about their dreams/passion. In both shows, the main character fights to help others without caring about themselves, occasionally losing friends. 

Both shows a different world that could change the normal life. Besides, the action and a bit of drama in both series are truly similar, though i enjoy BRS much more than C 

Both dive deeper into different worlds that greatly relate or effect their reality. Great characters too!  

Both have great character development which involved different world that connected and affect the real world 

Both Steins;Gate and Black Rock Shooter have the same artist known as Huke supporting them and have violence along with serious and not so serious times 

Both anime have similar storytelling styles which leave you wondering what's fruit of the characters imagination and what is reality Both also have a strong theme of morality of what if protecting someone comes at a cost to themselves or others 

Both are about girls who are transported to a different world in their dreams where they have to fight. Both tackle serious topics, some of the same ones, some different ones. 

Both anime are very similar, with parallel worlds that coincide in a way to the real world. Action packed and you learn more about the plot of each anime as you watch more. 

Both were based around notable vocaloid hatsune miku especially projects and both can also be pretty edgy and trippy and share a ya cast too. 

While not similar at all, both series are based on Vocaloid songs (Black Rock Shooter and the Kagerou Project) 

'Black★Rock Shooter' shows a another world which signify one's self or conscious in the real life. Meanings and art are sharply portrayed in the struggles of the ones involved. 'Accel World' shows us the struggle from a different person's perspective where the other world is the salvation and the strongest deserves to rule.  

For some reason, I find both of these series similar in the aspect that the main characters fights in another "world". Their avatars and selves reflect on the embodiment of their image in this other world fighting for reasons.

Both are dark themed magical girl series that focuses on 2 girls going through some pretty messed up shit as well as both being fairly short as well too. 

Both are supernatural action themed series with a ya cast and also lots of stylish visuals and art to look at as well too. 

Ok this could be a bit forced, but while I was watching BRS I really tought about Serial Experiments Lain, the "dark atmosphere" is similar, the unusal way the color is used in bot anime is enough. BRS is easier to comprehend while SEL isn't at all (you will understand at episode 8, but before is really hard). 

Dark Mahou Shoujos... one of them has to sacrificate herself. But BRS is better, of course ;D 

Genei wo Kakeru Taiyou keeps the friendship theme, but surrounds it with a world and plot that actually make sense. While a notch below, the fight scenes are still solid. 

Both have amazingly phenomenal animation and art styles, with epic fight scenes provided by casts of well-written female characters who use transforming weapons to fight. 

Both feature strong anime girls who fight evil forces. The protagonists have their moments of despair, but they always overcome the darkness and fight back.

Both feature strong female protagonists with a similar design. Black Rock Shooter is more action and plot-oriented, while Miss Monochrome is short and comedic.
