Excellent.

Black★Rock Shooter (TV) is a fantasy action thriller made by the best talents of Kyoto Animation and Trigger. The main reason why you should watch this is because this show a direct reference to Madoka Magica. No other anime captures the feels and the atmosphere of its predecessor while maintaining its own style so well as this one. They both complement each other so well that they are best watched together.

Warning: this anime is certainly not for everyone. Despite exceptional production value, this is a full-fledged arthouse, similar to the works of Kunihiko Ikuhara and Akiyuki Shinbo. If you are satisfied by Yuuki Yuuna and Magical Girl Raising Project and are scared of Monogatari series, you will most probably not enjoy this.

Black★Rock Shooter (OVA) is a concept movie for what later became a standalone TV series and a minor inspiration to Madoka Magica (pay close attention to the backgrounds, visuals, animations and character designs in both).

It is not much interesting, you may want to watch this mostly for historical reasons.

Very good.

Emulates its predecessor so well that even the ending may not satisfy you too - avoiding spoilers, there is a reason why the second season, inferior to this one, exists.

Bad.

But you may like it anyway if you do not mind watered writing (because Mari Okada did not know what to write after the first season).

Very similar to Madoka Magica in most measurable dimensions. If you can tolerate its episodic nature that may put many viewers to sleep, it is a great show. The movie is better anyway.

Better than the show. Removed all unnecessarily annoying episodic stuff that was in the anime, including fillers, and gave the series a conclusion.

Funny borderline bad. Perfectly balances comical and dramatic moments. Even the dramatic part of the show is laughable in a good way. Don't forget to watch Fate/Zero before.

This season lost its balance between comic and dramatic and became so dramatic that it ultimately turned into an average shounen with all problems of average shounen, but since it is considered the best in the Kaleid series, you may like it more than me. Watch Fate/Zero before.

It is not a good show, but among truly terrible rip-offs, this one is still very original and refreshing. Its value is just being tragic - unbelievably, grotesquely tragic. Ironically, it is also among the least post-mahou shoujo that explore possibilities to further subvert the features of the genre instead of simply recycling the recycled tropes again.

This is not a standalone work of art, this is an insult to a great classic and a bait for the least intelligent part of its fandom to lure them to watch it.

It does not have anything that makes Madoka Magica great. It does not explore altruism and self-sacrifice. It does not have any meaningful character development. It does not have artsy visuals. It is nowhere alike Madoka Magica except for one thing: suffering middle school girls.
