It's not entirely unusual for authors to become involved in criminal cases. Take for instance Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who took it upon himself to investigate cold cases involving wrongfully convicted men, or the more modern example of Kathy Reichs, who draws on her own background as a forensic anthropologist for her crime novels.

The cast in Kitsutsuki Tanteidokoro are also literary characters tackling crime and are based on real life Japanese poets and authors from the Meiji era.
