Manga 'Oooku' Gets Anime Series in Summer 2023

The Netflix Anime Special Stage at AnimeJapan 2023 announced an anime adaptation of Fumi Yoshinaga's Oooku (Ōoku: The Inner Chambers) manga on Saturday. The anime will premiere exclusively on Netflix in Summer 2023.

Yoshinaga serialized the historical drama manga in Melody from June 2004 to December 2020. Hakusensha published it in 19 volumes between October 2005 and February 2021. VIZ Media licensed the manga in English and released the 19th and final volume last March. Oooku has a cumulative 7 million copies of its volumes in circulation.

Synopsis
In Edo period Japan (1603 to 1868), a strange new disease called the Redface Pox has begun to prey on the country's men. Within eighty years of the first outbreak, the male population has fallen to a quarter of the total female population. Women have taken on all the roles traditionally granted to men, even that of the Shogun. Yesss a new shoujo! A great manga as well, and coming in summer so we don't have to wait forever, aside from Netflix being crappy this feels like a dream adaptation tbh

I didn't realize it at first, but I've realized that I've actually some of the mangaka's other work! Yoshinaga Fumi wrote "Antique Bakery", "What did you eat yesterday?", and various other works. I haven't read "Oooku", but I did think it was weird that an award-winning manga didn't have an anime (it does have 2 live-action films and a Drama series).

Listen, if this ends up being anywhere near as good as that series I'll love this instantly lol

I didn't know what to expect from this even after reading the synopsis, but given all of the praise that I'm seeing in here, I guess this one will be worth it and more

Studio Deen did a pretty good job with sasaki and miyano and their best work to this day, will always be hell girl imo and indeed it is pretty interesting that they did what mappa did in the past with bananafish adapting an older shoujosei story for modern times and hope this adaptation does well for the fans sake.

I heard great things about Oooku but haven't read it yet. I really hope Netflix and studio deen doesn't screw this anime up, it has the potential to be something like shouwa genroku rakugo shinjuu (also made by deen).

Interesting! I've never read it but I'm glad that such a unique series is getting some love :) Maybe we'll be getting some more shoujo adaptations soon?

i never had any expectations for oooku to ever get any sort of anime adaptation, and the fact that it's coming so soon this year after getting announced leaves a lot to be excited for. but i do not trust studio deen nor netflix. preferably, i'd want it to stay far away from oooku in particular... but if all is well, they may get it 'right'... in some way.

I'm always a sucker for historical animes and this one take place in the Edo period. I didn't realize that this is a shojo series, so this might be interesting.
