Very clear and to-the-point comment you made, jmal. Way too many people, particularly those in the west, make this simple mistake. I am more surprised by how hard it is for them to project things from their own preference and fail to look at the market from a macro and, yes, objective perspective. I am sure everyone, including me who love most of the output the industry is offering, knows some works that sell better than expected - but instead of ranting I'd say it should be viewed as an opportunity to learn - what may be the factor(s) that get them to sell? What factor was missed? Why a similar work failed to sell but this one succeeded? I would say there are a lot things we will gain by asking these questions.

Well the simple answer is that to a lot of people (like me), it's quite a bit better than average, and they're the ones buying it. When we want to understand why something sells, we have to completely throw out our personal opinions and ask the people who made it sell well, because they're the only ones who can possibly provide the relevant answers.

Also it does quite well, but not amazingly well or anything. First series averaged 11,111, the sequel will maybe average... I dunno, 8k would be a high end guess I suppose.

Solid sales by any measure, but not any better than, say, Maou-sama or Oregairu, to cite two recent examples of popular romcom novels turned anime (though their popularity wasn't as high pre-anime as Haganai's was so they're arguably more impressive).

I wasn't expecting anything from Maou-sama, and yet to watch Oregairu, but I will.

Haganai is disappointing to a LN-first reader like me, but I guess it is better than average... At least its not something like, I dunno, the blah oniichan anime, what was it again? whatever... bad show.

Haganai the novel. Can understand better, art is great, but Anime? Nah.

Time for another round of guessing game: guess what's going to be 3rd on the anime blu-ray list next week (assuming Maou and Index are pretty much guaranteed the top 2 spots).
My money's on Jojo.
I'd say Jojo as well. I think chances that it is not Jojo is quite small...

Seems last episode of SnK had positive effect on sales. All volumes in both DVD and BD got quite big boost (at least on Amazon some volumes gained like 50+ positions). Most likely it will not affect v2 position on BD charts, but i have feeling w2 sales for v2 will be bigger than for v1.

Kotoura-san v6 hanging on by her teensy weeny fingernails. Too bad, one I really enjoyed. Nice to get a bunch of drama CDs with the BDs and manga, wonder if they recorded any more for later manga volumes? I hope so as I quite enjoy them.

But where or where is Genshiken? Shall be Thursday only by the look of it, hope it ranks though I couldn't bring myself to buy it. I love the manga and will get volume 15 with the OAD but couldn't pull the trigger on the Blurays for some reason, the comedy works once for me though I do enjoy it.

Wow, shocking sales of vol.1 Danganronpa... what the hell happened there?!
You mean too high or too low?
Dunno, I was under the impression that it was a lot more popular in Japan than the sales figures show. *shrug*

IMO, it is selling more than it deserves, one of the worst shows this season

The show is really bad, I watched the lets play and really enjoyed it, but the show pales in comparison, that's the difference of a novel/game and an Anime I suppose, there are far more details that you can put in the game.

But anyhow, WOW. Endymion sold REALLY well, I might actually watch the movie at this point(considering I am reading the novels already, why not?)

And look at that! Railgun S Vol 2 sold better than Vol 1, guess that's expected cause the story is heating up...

Hoppy said:
Index is still selling, maybe we can get a much needed 3rd season.

Symphogear's still rocking in the music category, I can say the series is safe for a third season based on that alone, plus there's merchandise to back it up if BD sales go south like everything else that isn't Free or Monogatari this season.

That new season better be faithful while tasteful. Because Season 2 was CR@P. Railgun S Shows how good a faithful adaptation can also be good, I don't want them do the arcs so... Emotionlessly? Formulatically? Whatever

I can't say I've noticed any trend that correlates lower MSRPs with higher sales (let alone proof of causation). particularly for the late night anime we're talking about here.

The only way that lower prices can be made up for by increased sales is if the product is mainstream, where the potential audience is huge. Animation, as much as we all love it, is not mainstream.

Anyone with the principles/passion to purchase a BD as opposed to viewing the free downloaded version is not going to be scared off by price, those who are scared off by the price are most likely content with the free version.

From what I understand, 9000 is very good. But I still wish it had been a runaway success because the show was very, very good.

This may be the turning point of the high BD prices, since people want more value in the products they buy. If studios start to notice and lower the BD prices, more people will buy them.
Just a note that it is not the studios which determine the BD prices (and also not how many discs are pressed or how they are distributed). It is the production and distributor that would be handling that...

And the issue with your argument is we do not know how elastic the demand curve is, meaning we are not sure the increase in sales due to lowered price will necessarily lead to increased revenue.

There's that reverse importation issue coming into play. Hopefully the studios will take note and make enough for everyone who wants it next time.
I don't think the availability is at issue here because the standard edition of all 6 volumes are available and there is no shortage issue. Those who still have not bought the BDs must be more concerned about the price than availability. And if this BD indeed has the whole series (the product details are not clear but I believe it is the case) then it will be a really big discount from even the supposedly cheap standard edition. The thing is, I am not sure the production companies (not the studios who only created the product but not responsible for making the discs or distributing them) will now take note and sell the discs in cheaper price...
