I can admit that they fucked up the movies remakes for DBSuper but its getting better each time, last weeks ep was really well animated. so i guess that sometimes the old one looks better than the new but i like both. |

Tbh Toei's end it's just different staff working on the two shows here (Sailor Moon Crystal and Dragon Ball Super) so that's kind of an bad example. In some sense, although few would be for production issues I don't know. As for HxH and FMA... well, probably I mean, not really sure around that. Regards on Retro anime I'm opened for Retro anime because well, despite the fact that I'm on the Moefag or Moe Aesthetics (being fair I like dem cute things) I'm good with the normal style or traditional ones. |

For sure! I don't think it was a joke BTW. 10 years old is considered retro in the video gaming world. And if you compare say Princess Tutu to Death Note, you would think it was SO MUCH OLDER than it when really it is only 4 years older. I mean look at Koi Kaze... it is from 2004. Or Peach Girl in 2005. You can really see the jumps. |

Well... character, and well the animation is significantly better in season 3. They actually make an effort in season 3. Maybe if you watched the original, you might understand a little more about why they really fucked it up and how. But yeah jeez. As much as extending Sailor Moon to 200 episodes might be "bad" so is squishing it into condensed soup that is unrecognizable as soup only as salt. XD |

• Greed looks better in the old version • Sailor Moon looks great in both; no preference • No preference with Gon either • It looks like you cherrypicked a derp moment for the new series so I'll withhold judgement To answer the thread's question, old anime can look better or worse than new anime and vice versa. This is purely a case by case sort of thing. |

How do people manage to keep up this kind of a "debate"? Like, yeah, some "old" anime looks better than "new" anime. For instance, with the parallels shown the FMA and Sailor Moon examples I think the style of the older series were definitively better to me. The HxH one isn't much of a difference imo let alone a necessary improvement. And while (with my little Dragon ball knowledge) do think the style of a lot of the older stuff is better, that Super screenshot is obviously just a cherry pick. You can find stuff like that in a lot of anime, especially when characters are drawn smaller. Plus Toei isn't exactly known for their animation from a lot of their mainstay series (aside precure, precure has awesome animation). Anime is just different now. Not necessarily better. Not necessarily worse. Which it falls on is pretty much determined by your specific taste, not by some objective fact that new anime doesn't look good compared to old stuff, or something like that. For instance, try to find me a TV anime with the same kind of style and small attention to detail that you see consistently come out of KyoAni with series like K-on!!, Eupho, or MaiDragon. I highly doubt you can because it most likely doesn't exist in older TV anime. By the early 2000s there were a couple shows that started to close, but I'm talking 70s through 90s mostly. You can also try to find me a modern show with the same kind of style as 80s series like Legend of the Galactic Heroes or Macross. Again, it doesn't exist. Just appreciate what styles you like, and don't try to shit on other people's taste so much, unless its light hearted. |

I don't really think it's a matter of one being better than the other, they are just two completely different aesthetics and styles. One thing is to compare the new installaments from franchises, made just and only to make money thanks to the nostalgic factor, with the original installaments, which gained those shows fanbases that has lasted until today. And another is to compare the aesthetic of one decade to another. For example: Neon Genesis Evagelion and Cowboy Bebop look gorgeous still today meanwhile, Great Teacher Onizuka, released after those two shows, has aged terribly Sailor Moon Crystal's aesthetics sucks, anyway. romagia said: fully agree retro anime like death note are way better animation than this new kawaii dogcrap fad Death Note, retro? The best you can get out of this is a sometimes. Movies and OVA with large budget and TV anime where the staff really cared can kiij better than the average TV anime now, but in TV anime back then... well, they more often than now put a lot of work into the inanimate parts, like background art on expense of the parts that had to be animated. And for your examples, It really matters what do you compare to what. Also, I don't know what are you trying to imply with Sailor Moon. And with Dragon Ball, it's one thing Toei messed up and another that you compare a TV anime to a movie. |
