If I'm in a fight for my life, I would personally use every dirty trick in the book. So what i don't understand is in semi serious shows, where we the user are meant to relate to, why not scratch, bite, pull hair and kick male characters in the unmentionables??

It's because of honor, if you want a character like that cheer for the bad guy. (I know what you mean though)

I just get dumbfounded when characters are getting owned and they don't do everything they can to beat another character

It'd be boring if the final fight ended with a kick to the balls right?

Why make a Chinese cartoon if you're not going to fight like the Chinese?

1. Honor

2. Why would I root for someone who only wins because he kicks sand in his opponents eyes or deliberately handicaps them to the point where they can't win? That's a villain trait.

smh. Its not about winning or losing, its about doing everything you can to not die, i mean if you or I were in a life or death situation i would definitely fight dirty if i had no hope of winning and i believe you would too.

Yeah, but you don't want to see the guy who got his ass whooped and wasn't nearly as strong as the other guy win just because he played dirty and caught the other guy off guard. He didn't earn the win because of skill he earned it because he wasn't playing fair.

In real life it's different obviously, because survival is wanted. In anime though, you don't want to root for that guy, you want to see a fair clean fight where the guy you support wins because they deserved it. And again, honor is a very important part regarding this.

You should check out Now and Then, Here and There. There's one particular scene that feels like a real fight, and it's with a girl.

If you're talking about episode 6, I know what you're talkin' 'bout.

Fun Fact: I first bought the series on dubbed VHS tapes at a bookstore that was going out of business. Though, when I say "bought the series," I secretly mean "the only tapes they had," which secretly means "episodes 6 through 13." That scene was my introduction to the series. And it hooked me instantly. The first 5 episodes are nice and all, once I finally saw them, but THAT'S how you start watching a series, man!

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

There's a fight like that in Scryed. Unfortunately it's towards the end of the series, but it's one of the most memorable anime fights I've seen because of how grotesque it gets.

i think they shared fair amount for country like japan that put honor above everything...

we talking about country who prefer killing himself rather than bring shame to their name.. and wound in back sign for cowardness because look like warrior who run from battle...

The way I understand it:
1) dirty tricks work either in a fight between two people who are bad in fighting (like two ordinary girls in a romantic anime), or against somebody who learned all his fighting in a sports context and does not expect any dirty tricks.
Any worthy opponent knows all those tricks and will defend against them well enough.

2) In a fight for your life, it's better to stick to things you have practiced a lot. Improvised tricks would not be as effective.

3) Frankly, anime is entertainment. It wants to show us a good-looking fight, and that's what it does.

Actually there are a few who fight dirty.

Kyou kara ore Wa's Mitsuhashi, fights dirty, and he's motto for fighting is "Everything is fine, aslong as you win." One of the reasons he is one of the hilarious characters ever, Since he uses any dirty tactic to win, . And contrasts nicely with his partner in crime Itou who is more honourable and likes to fight one on one.

Theres alot of dirty fighting in Kyou Kara ore Wa. The Manga is brilliant, shame the OVA's were not complete.

Even in FMP Sagara could be considered a Dirty fighter, since he resorts to guns, bombs and hostage tactics. Against normal thugs.

Than there are a couple of scenes in Slam Dunk when Thugs attack the Basketball club, knowing they won't do shit cause they can get kicked out of the tournament or the club banned, and than there is the one person getting assaulted by groups.

I guess because Japanese people values honor a lot or something. However, even in the shonen animes there are characters who fight dirty and that, so that it's not something that strange.

Well, as someone suggested above, you have Kiritsugu Emiya who doesn't give a shit about honor.
You also have the great villain Raou from Hokuto no Ken who "does anything" it takes to achieve his goal.

What I like about these two is that they both develop their point of view about "Honor" throughout the story.

Speaking of examples, Adlet from Rokka no Yuusha is all about tricks. But it's usually on the level of "trick sword that actually spills caltrops", not on the level of "kick to the nuts". That works better.

Cause all the fun is seeing people watching fair and squre? It's difficult to love someone who cheats or plays dirty all the time. That's why most of those who play ditry, are the "villains."

And he looks pretty awesome doing it!! so my point is why isn't this implemented more in anime i guess. be cool to see characters try and actually use little tricks to win instead of just power and friendship beats everything

Lots of peoples who watched didn't like his dirty way to fight AFAIK. So well, if it's not popular, there's little chance to have lots of those, I suppose?
I agree with you, but it doesn't seem like something peoples like comapred to the -for me- super-boring power of friendship.

How did he not earn the win?..last I checked, a fight doesn't have any rules outside of beating your opponents before he beats you.

I'd rather have characters use their brains instead of their fist since it makes things more unpredictable compared to the other approach...
