| I've set my manga list to private mainly for two reasons. Firstly, it's not completely finalized or updated yet. There are still some titles I need to add or remove, and I haven't had the chance to go through and make those adjustments. While I do plan to address it eventually, it's not a top priority for me at the moment. Secondly, which is also the main reason, is that I consider my manga list to be more of a "personal notepad" rather than something I want to share with others. It's where I titles I don't want to forget, and it's strictly for my use. In any case, I haven't been reading much manga lately, so it's not a big deal. However, if there's a manga I'm interested in discussing, I'll definitely be open to it. |

| I don't think I have met many people who keep only their manga listings private. I do see people who keep both anime and manga lists private. I think that is because they want to keep track of what they have watched but don't want others to see it. You know, sometimes you can predict a person's tastes and in some cases, their sexuality, based on the works they read. |

| Well, it's not really as common to see it set as private, as I feel that the vast majority of users just keep the default settings no matter the setting. But anyhow, as someone who sets both anime and manga list to private, I can tell you why. Firstly, I use MyAnimeList as a place to keep a personal log of all the anime and manga I've consumed over the years, with the benefit of getting some notifications on if/when they get sequels. I don't use the site to create a community. After all, it's called MYanimeLIST, not CommunityforAnimeSharing or something of the sort. You do you if you do. But for me, this site is literally a List of My Anime logs. So what's the point of sharing it here? Secondly, I use the notes/tags of my lists to link to some stuff, including a few of them being used to share with my group of friends regarding a specific thing I'm reading/watching. It shouldn't have my personal info/shouldn't be using my personal account on it per se, but I'm pretty sure it'll still link up to my IRL identity if you search hard enough. I don't wanna risk it so I just set my lists to private. Thirdly, though this reason was the trigger to private it and as of present time had become obsolete: years ago, for some reason, bots, who had went into people's profiles and commented shady stuff, stopped commenting on my profile when I set my lists to private. No clue why, maybe my actions were just timing (though I distinctly remember mal had a small wave of bots followed by a large, practically impossible to avoid wave of bots, and somehow I avoided that second wave as soon as I turned my list to private. But I digress,) so let's just say it was probably just luck. Also, I've seen a lot of previous comments saying that it's probably just because they want to hide their hentai, which I guess could be one of my reasons and many people's too? But a couple of my favourites literally have some of the most intense sexual content I've read from my list overall. Admittedly, my favourites don't count as hentai in the classical/well-known sense like the other entries in my private list (doujins), but it is somehow more intense than that. So it's not like I'm hiding my perversions lol. |

That doesn't explain why some MAL users are willing to show off their H-manga and not afraid or shame for it.
