What do you consider an average anime, most anime have score around 7, not around 5

I'm not generous with my ratings but I won't say it's too hard to get a score above 5 from me, if I don't like the show and would give it a bad rating, most of the times I just delete it from my list and I don't give it a rating

to me average anime is the one that makes no impression on me, or only negative ones - it is boring, disgusting...

so the question stands, what does anime you rated a 5 mean to you?

For me, 5/10 is quite a bad show. I didn't like it pretty much at all except for some random scenes here and there.

5 for me means "I got adequate entertainment from this. I don't regret watching it, but I also don't think I'd have been missing out if I didn't watch it".

Half-baked in what it was trying to do, or a show that didn't have much content nor substance to begin with.

5/10 is terrible. An anime I watched, but was a really bad experience overall. The thing for me is, below 5, is unwatchable tiers, being 4 highest and 1 lowest of the low.

I've yet to encounter a 1.

5 is what I would consider as "below average", still watchable but not very good.

For me 5 is a bad show. I hated it. Its got some good points but a lot more bad points that can't he overlooked.

5/10 is average, as its definition says. The truth is I have a tendency to be lenient so a lot of times I give 6/10 to shows that otherwise would deserve 5/10.

It means I didn't like it, but I didn't dislike it either. It was ok, and maybe I'd give it another shot if it got a second season.

I generally see the 4-6 range as being in-between bad and good. Not great, not terrible, but tolerable.

I wouldn't recommend it nor would I ever watch it again. Not even as background but it's not so awful I don't think it's worthwhile others enjoy it.

The reasons for the ratings I give differ from series to series but in general:

-Shows I find boring almost always get a 4 or lower so a 5 is at the very least not boring
-Shows I have an somewhat of an attachment to I rate 6 or higher. Shows I rank 5 I felt no emotion towards besides a little enjoyment.
-A anime to me is a show that is one that I enjoyed enough to finish but not enough to watch it again; I would rewatch my 6s but not my 5s and definitely not my 4s.

Considering that 4 = bad (at least according to MAL), by definition 5 = not bad. It shouldn't be used for anime you hate or regret watching.

With that said, what actually a 5 means to you depends on how you want to shape your list. For example, my scores are skewed downward because I have no use for 4 different levels of bad and, considering that 5/10 corresponds to three stars out of five (if no decimals are allowed, 5-6/10 = 3/5), it's totally ok to see it as a positive score.

All my scores have weight. I am often asked: "Why did you give anime X a 5 or a 6, do you hate it?" While my 5 is a positive score.
In my scoring system 4 and 5 are scores for average anime. 6 is good, 7 is very good.

I have my scores defined on my profile:

5: Just Mediocre. It's definitely not bad, but it either doesn't have any unique qualities, or it's being held back by something like weak writing.

Unlike 90% of the people on this site, I actually use the full 10 point scale, so 5 is average to maybe just slightly below.

Average or (mostly) it was good for what it did, but all in all it wasn't anything different a.k.a. more of the same cliche. Again, not bad IMO

It can be for different reasons, if could be its just overall average or has a god awful story but objectively the voice acting, animation, art style and so on are incredible.

For me, 5 is the highest rating I can give to something I didn't personally enjoy. Mostly it's something that had some things that I enjoyed, as well as interesting ideas but executed them in a way I really didn't care for, or messed them up at some point. If it's not BAD bad, but I still left with more negative feelings than positive, that's a 5 for me.

For me, I use "5" rating for Anime that failed to deliver in almost every essential aspect of a story/an Anime. Something that's probably watcheable but would not be worth the time to do so and is better spent elsewhere.

It could mean a number of things:

Something that I fundamentally disagree with when it comes to some aspect(s)/concept(s) or was somewhat disappointed by, but I still like it.
Something that didn't click with me enough to be considered an overall positive experience, but I still had a nice time with it.
Something that was very engaging, but had quite a few things that I hated, which somewhat ruined the whole experience. Regardless of how engaging and entertaining something is as a whole, I'm going to give it 5/10 (or even lower in extreme cases) if there are a lot of things that constantly annoy me (characters, presentation, dialogues - virtually anything that manages to continuously get on my nerves).
Enjoyable recaps or compilation films also get 5/10, but I'm not sure if this rule will persist in the future.

Nothing else comes to mind at the moment. I'd rather talk about a particular anime/manga/game etc. and explain my reasoning behind the score rather than try to describe all the possible meanings behind each number. The way I rate is pretty simple on the surface, but it can also get pretty complicated when it comes to details for each particular case. In any case, 5/10 is still a relatively nice score on my scale, and even 4/10 is not the end of the world (although I'd really struggle to describe it as an overall enjoyable experience). 3/10 usually means that I struggled to gain anything from the experience or was extremely annoyed/unimpressed/bored/disappointed (usually a combination of these), for the most part, while 2/10 and 1/10 scores are just pure hate territory. Depending on how these negative impressions combine, I can either choose to drop something or power through it, so it doesn't always mean that "lowest score = dropped". I also used to finish everything in the past due to OCD, so it's only natural for me to have tons of completed long-running series with very low scores.

5 usually means I didn't have a good time watching the show. It might have some good/entertaining moments, but my major impression of the show is negative. Anything lower than a 5 for me doesn't necessarily mean it's a terrible show, but sometimes also means I heavily disliked some part of it that made me petty, e.g., I hated the art style.

5 for me, means I don't feel like I wasted my time with it, but at the same time, I don't feel I would be missing out if I hadn't watched it. Anything below 5 usually means I have some active dislike for the show overall, to varying degrees. anything above 5 I have an interest in that shows future to varying degrees.

It's kind of the "meh, well I now know that exists" spot on my list, leaving me with no real positive or negative thoughts towards it.

I'm using only 6-10. I used to play with the ratings a bit in the past, but nowadays I consider it a waste of time. That's why I don't bother to use 1-5. If it's not a good show, I will not get back to it, so I don't need to think about the rating. Whether it's 2 or 4, it doesn't matter, it's not good anyway, so I can just leave it as completed.

I don't care if my ratings won't contribute to the overall picture, and I think it's better to focus on the positives. You can check my rating system in detail on my profile.

By the words of Anatoli Diatlov from HBO's Chernobyl Series (I doubth the real one had says this but bear with it)

A 5 for me means: "Not Great, Not Terrible"

It's just in the middle, not good enough to be good, but not bad enough to be bad.

It could also mean wasted potential

5 to me is completely average. It's so-so. Not amazing but not really bad in any stand out way. Any negative parts are balanced out by the good parts. A decent time killer but not something I would ever care to see again. Most things I feel fall into this category. A lot of stuff just exists with me being fairly neutral about it. I feel like everything starts out as a 5 and either rises or falls in score based on what it does next. To fall below 5 it has to agitate or annoy me in some way, and to rise above it it has to really excel in at least one category, like really funny, great art, etc. There's so much stuff that is so middle of the road that doesn't even try to stand out, that's what gets a 5.

5/10 means to me that it not only doesn't have a good story/entertainment, but it doesn't bring anything to the table compared to other anime either similar to it or that have released throughout all of time. It also sucks for my taste since I prefer unique (avant garde) stories and stories with deep psychological and philosophical elements. It is not to say I still enjoy the usual slice of life and shonen, but it's that those shows should have something that I would still enjoy about it ( great cast of characters, great and deep themes, etc....) My lowest rating is a 5/10 and it is the smartphone isekai anime, so I think that tells you what I prefer in anime.......

In most cases I rate anime as 5/10 when it's not only typical and generic but also provoke a strong desire to watch it in a fast forward mode. If anime is not so special but at least keep my attention then it's automatically 6/10 at least.

usually means there were moments I enjoyed enough that I can’t claim to outright dislike it, but a lot less than there would be in shows rated 6 or higher

also if I don’t like one aspect of the show enough it can bring a rating to a 5 but not a 4 because I can’t claim to think it’s bad overall

not a popular rating for me as most shows in that range are either straight up in the I don’t like it territory while still being kinda inoffensive (4) or leave me with a “that was a fine way to spend my time” feeling and not much else (6)

I would describe a show with a score of 5 as a mediocre show. Not horrible, but not great either. A score of 4 is a bad show, and a score of 6 is a show that is just okay. I only like shows that are at least a 7.

If I was to erase my memory of every anime I've watched and only had my list to go off of, a 5 is the lowest score of the anime on the list that I would watch. If I wouldn't want myself to watch it, it is below a 5.

5 means average, middling, so-so. It's neither good nor bad. The pros and cons cancel each other out to neutral. No strong feelings to be found. The highest praise I'd give to something average would be it's watchable.

Conventionally using the entire scale means 1-4 are negative, 5 is neutral, and 6-10 are positive.

5 I use as my "average" score, although this is a sort of average of all anime. If I watched a proper 12 episode TV series and it only deserves a 5 that's honestly embarrassing, since it's competing against things like music videos and OVAs, so having length on its side and still winding up as average is definitely not a good thing. Usually if I give a TV series a 5 it's because it generally means that I couldn't find much to enjoy about it. All of its qualities I care about are either neutral or negative.

For shorter anime a 5 isn't as bad. If I gave a music video a 5 it means it gave me what I expected, nothing special, but also not particularly poorly produced.

5s for me are the most forgettable anime that do nothing interesting
a bad anime leaves an impression, you usually remember it
a 5 is one that you see when looking through your list and say, "what is this, i don't even remember ever watching this"
