I've been intentionally avoiding Clannad, Grave of the fireflies and 5cm per second because I know they're sad and I can't survive hits in the feels.
Does anybody else do that?

I save sad shows for the time when I'm in the correct mood to watch them.

Watching tear jerkers when you're not in the right mood can highly affect your enjoyment.

I only consume entertainment to be moved, whether that's to tears or joy or whatever.

I'd rather not watch them, I know they are sad, I know they're good, but I'm ready for them.

honestly yeah, that’s why I haven’t seen Clannad despite my favorite studio being Kyoani; however it’s not like I never watch sad anime but I try to find a time where I am prepared for some depressing stuff

Yep. If I know they're gonna make me cry I avoid them like the plague. I also try and avoid anything with heavy drama because drama tends to stress me out and I'm already too stressed as it is.

No. As long as it has a good plot, then I'm probably going to love it.

Still haven't seen A Place Further than the Universe cause I heard it's sad. Most of the time I just can't handle the feels, nor do I want to sadly.

Clannad ain't that sad, at least till the second season, the whole first season is basically just a light romcom with some "so deep" moments. And this is coming from someone who gave it a 10, so it ain't something I'm holding against it

Yes, because they end up hurting me emotionally causing me to left to cry myself to sleep at night.
I remember that when I was about 9 years old, I watched Grave of The Fireflies and cried. A lot.. like a LOT. So because of that, I decided I would avoid upsetting or sad anime.

I definitely don't avoid them, and some of the best anime I've seen have had some pretty sad stuff in them, but I DO wait until I'm in the right mood for them. It's easy to sit down and watch something simple and fun, but I really have to be in the mood to watch something emotional and sad. If I watch something like that at the wrong time, I'm just not going to enjoy it as much as I could have.

No but I have to admit that sometimes it's hard watching characters you get attached to being in those hard situations but if things get better it's satisfying. If not, I can still enjoy the story for what it is.

I might tend to do that too. It's not that I can't handle sad things, I like them even.
It's just that sometimes you need to be in the right mood and mental space for it!
Though I also don't mind it when I dived into a show and not expecting it to make me sob (which is great because that means its storytelling is certainly impactful enough and done right!)

Yeah, that's why I have been sleeping on Clannad for a long time and I stopped watching Rainbow halfway through because it was getting too sad.

Honestly the shows that make me cry feel like best shows for me because there needs to be some attachment to the characters or whatever is happening to create such a strong feeling. I've always appreciated things that make me cry more than things that make my laugh. And sometimes it just feels good to let it all out.

That being said, I still haven't gotten around to watching any of the above mentioned anime.

i get a craving for sad shows actually. but, yeah occasionally i do avoid anime that specifically have a reputation for it because i start to think that there's no meaning to life afterwards. not even in a funny way, not trying to be edgy, sad media that actually affects me really burrows into my headspace.
because i have issues.

Nope. There aren't many anime that manage to make me feel moved or cry, so I try to watch "sad" anime to find the ones that can. I haven't cried for Clannad but I should probably give the other two OP mentioned a shot.

I won't rule out watching the famous tearjerkers like Clannad, Anohana, and Your Lie in April, but I kinda like a better mix of emotions. not into YOU WILL CRY OR ELSE media in general. I like my crying and tearjerking as one flavor among several.

Actually I do the opposite, I search for them. It's because what I'm going through right now. You know, I would be watching another genres, but drama tends to comfort me (quite hard to explain)

I don't agree. I like to watch sad shows because it can give some important lessons in life. Clannad and 5 cm are good, I haven't seen the other one. The best way to avoid watching anime is NTR.

You've been intentionally ignore watching Clannad but you've already watched Kokoro Connect and Nagi no Asu. They are rollercoaster of feels.

Don't do that, that way you will miss a lot of great shows. Sometimes a sad anime even helps you and makes you feel better when you are in a depressive period, like Haibane Renmei does it to me every time.

Sometimes. What matters to me is the substance of the work; the sadness needs to be a consequence of the plot, not the point of it.

If I am in a down or depressed mood I don't watch anything sad or depressing that might exacerbate that feeling. I also tend to watch them with my girlfriend more than alone.

I don't outright avoid them though.

If i'm in more of a sad mood, i avoid them. But i can usually handle the sad stuff, i've seen a few sad shows and only one of them made me cry. Anohana's ending.

The only other anime i cried at was Yugioh.

Yes, because I end up more annoyed than emotional, rolling my eyes seeing that "sadness" that 90% of the time it's just cheesy melodrama, especially in romance series....

I'm reluctant to watch stuff with a reputation of being sad because in my experiece they are nearly always a blatant attempt at baiting tears and not a result of a sincere story. If something tries to be sad for the sake of being sad then it can go fuck itself.
