in case you have no idea what i'm referencing, here are some examples of what i'm talking about:

i personally quite like it and think it's really cool, usually looks really beautiful and can make for a nice background too.

I think it's just visual shorthand to represent a dreamlike place of complete purity and natural wonder.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

I'm not sure I've actually seen any anime that use the "water sky" trope, but I am aware of its existence.

I do find it quite visually interesting, although I imagine I'd probably get tired of it rather quickly if I started seeing it a lot...

Aw hell yeah... though I'm in the same boat as @Kuroni_Kuru, as in I actually don't really see this trope that often in anime.

This is probably not what OP's talking about, but Weathering With You pulled off a similar idea beautifully imo.

Trying to think of the oldest example of this.

Obviously there's the Dark Link fight in Legend of Zelda OOT

I think there is a similar thing in the second Urusei Yatsura movie from 1984

They make good wallpapers, for sure.

I do not see the trope in anime often though, mostly a dream-like state where you find peace kinda vibe.

All I know is that I love this scene from Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

Watch more movies, please.

Perhaps, this is hell.

I think it’s really neat, it always reminds me of someone walking on water. Pretty sure it’s used in Hyouka’s first op too.

Also, I legit have that SAO pic set as my laptop wallpaper right now. :)

Haha I was just thinking about this watching Adachi to Shimamura!! I like it a lot, very visually pleasing. Kingdom Hearts also has some sick water/sky art too.

It's a popular format for wallpapers, but in anime I've only seen it used in Your Lie in April and one of the openings/endings for Gundam IBO.

Quite lovely to look at. If it was just that kind of background with no characters in sight, that's wallpaper worthy

I love it. I often wonder if there are parts of the world which actually do look like that. I swear i've seen some pictures online somewhere about it. That being said the more overused they become, it can become a bit same old, same old.

Probably dry lake beds after a period of a lot of rain, with a thin/shallow layer of water.

It's visually and metaphorically pleasing and captivating. The trope can be used to represent a strong emotion within a series.

I don't think it's an actual trope since it doesn't tell anything in particular.
It's just a piece of scenery porn, nothing more.

So yeah, looks nice but whatever. I fail to see it as an metaphor (For what? Desolation? Serenity? It can reflect whatever you are projecting.).

I think there is a difference between stylistic "water reflects sky" and mythological "sky is water" like in Weathering with you.

Anyway it really does make for great wallpapers

Someone post the collaboration image of every anime character standing there.

a trope doesn't have to be a metaphor for something or tell anything in particular, a trope can also be a commonplace, recognizable plot element, theme, or visual cue. you would call something like nosebleeds a trope in anime but i don't really think you would say it's like a metaphor.

I agree but the poster before me (LordSozin) said something about metaphors and I disagree "water sky" being such.

"Water sky" is not any of those. Let's take your example - nose bleeding is an obvious sing of high blood pressure but someone standing on a big mirror can mean many things - this person can be lost (no visual reference points) or in pure bliss or devoid of emotions ect.

- Not a trope.
- Not a metaphor or at least I am not familiar what it should symbolise.

It is trope because it means certain things, "water sky" doesn't.

i think you're misunderstanding, the word trope has 2 definitions. i'm talking about the other type, it can also be a common or overused theme or device.

Ouch, you outnerded me with your Merriam-Webster stuff...but I still think than when people talk about tropes they mainly mean "a storytelling shorthand for a concept that the audience will recognize and understand instantly" and there is nothing to understand behind "water sky" in contrast to "nosebleed".

I've seen these earth mirrors only in Kemonozume, and I love it.. there's an entire episode set on a giant earth mirror. I can only imagine how it would feel like in real to be in one.. :) IDK about underlying meanings, well, if they pop into my head then maybe.. such scenes are basically enjoyed in a state of anoesis..

quick anime that comes to mind is kimi no nawa. sky is the limit, but people do have limit if it's too much sky, sometimes we need to look down and appreciate what on earth is going on. :p
