The 26th and final episode of Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) ended with an announcement on Saturday that a sequel anime film is in production. The film will cover the Mugen Ressha-hen (Infinity Train arc, also known as the Demon Train arc). Haruo Sotozaki (Tales of Zestiria the Cross) is returning to direct the film at animation studio ufotable. Akira Matsushima (Maria-sama ga Miteru) is also reprising as the character designer. The lead cast members from the television anime will also reprise their roles. Synopsis Ever since the death of his father, the burden of supporting the family has fallen upon Tanjirou Kamado's shoulders. Though living impoverished on a remote mountain, the Kamado family are able to enjoy a relatively peaceful and happy life. One day, Tanjirou decides to go down to the local village to make a little money selling charcoal. On his way back, night falls, forcing Tanjirou to take shelter in the house of a strange man, who warns him of the existence of flesh-eating demons that lurk in the woods at night. When he finally arrives back home the next day, he is met with a horrifying sight—his whole family has been slaughtered. Worse still, the sole survivor is his sister Nezuko, who has been turned into a bloodthirsty demon. Consumed by rage and hatred, Tanjirou swears to avenge his family and stay by his only remaining sibling. Alongside the mysterious group calling themselves the Demon Slayer Corps, Tanjirou will do whatever it takes to slay the demons and protect the remnants of his beloved sister's humanity. [Written by MAL Rewrite] Kimetsu no Yaiba adapts Koyoharu Gotouge's supernatural action manga of the same title, which began airing on April 6. Aniplex of America licensed the anime series and streamed it on Crunchyroll, Funimation, and Hulu. Adult Swim's Toonami programming block will run the show with English dub beginning October 12. Prior to serialization, Gotouge received an honorable mention at the 70th Jump Treasure Newcomer Manga Awards in 2013 for their Kagarigari one-shot, which became the prototype for Kimetsu no Yaiba. The latter began serializing in Weekly Shounen Jump in February 2016. Shueisha published the 16th volume on July 4, with the 17th volume planned for an October 4 release. Kimetsu no Yaiba has a cumulative 10 million copies of its compiled volumes in circulation. VIZ Media licensed the manga in English in July 2017 and publishes it simultaneously with the Japanese release in their Shounen Jump service. The eighth volume went on sale on September 3, and the ninth volume will be published on November 5. Shueisha's Manga Plus platform also began simulpublishing the manga in English this January. Kimetsu no Yaiba ranked among the top 20 manga in the male readers category in the 2018 Kono Manga ga Sugoi rankings. Absolutely thrilled over this news and can NOT wait, oh yeah! Ufotable have been giving it their all for 26 episodes in a trot, I can't even begin to imagine the quality a movie and that too of such a hyped arc is in store for us! My day is blessed, thank you Ufotable! |

Fuck, this means we're not getting a proper sequel. Anytime series get a movie sequel, that's the end of the series and they don't get another season |

There are still awesome arcs in kimetsu after the one in the movie, not too mention the arc that appear in the movie ends with a gigantic cliffhanger. It would be super weird if they end it there. |

If they are dropping a movie in the middle of the story that covers a part of the main story, that is more than a little concerning for the hope of a season 2. This is definitely not the news I wanted to hear. |

Its a good decision imo, as the train arc is pretty short in the manga and thus fit for a movie. With that out of the way, they can animate the red light district arc and swordsmiths village arc freely. Both are long, intense arcs while train arc is more of a transition arc and honestly adapting all the three arcs in the same season will cause some rushed pacing. Considering the success of the bd sales of the 1st season, it would pretty dumb business-wise to not animate those two arcs, especially since the rld arc is the first arc where the series start increasing in popularity. Looks like we'll just have to wait and see i'm not really worried though |

Grisaia series had a movie sequel in between and still got a proper sequel afterward. Same thing with SAO and Major. It's probably more of the case that this supposed train arc's length is going to be better to do in a movie-length rather than include it as part of a 2nd season |

Movie format makes sense because Demon Train is relatively shorter than the succeeding arcs. It's better this way so they can fit Red Light District and Swordsmith Village in one season. |
Sep 28, 2019 9:39 AM

Huh,not really surprised but I think this is actually a good decision since the Demon Train arc is pretty short in length hence perfect for a movie. Then they can take their time to adapt the longer arcs (like Red Light District arc) into a series. It would be plain nonsense (heck, just bad business and money opportunity) not to animate the rest after the Demon Train arc. |

I would have liked a second season announcement right off the bat, but more of this story in any format won't draw any complaints from me. Plus, think about how fucking gorgeous this movie will look given the amount of time they'll have to work on it. Episode 19 looked as good as it did and that was with a TV anime production schedule, so this movie will definitely look nothing short of amazing. |

Okay, I'm very happy for this, because movie productions often look good, and the art was already nuts, so I'm preparing myself for eyegasms. On the other hand, I hope it's a TV movie, even though I'm pretty sure it won't, which means, for me in Brazil, that there will be painful months after the release until I can watch it. |
