THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- Hmm, it took 7 episodes but we finally got the beach one. Poor Sophie Cute to see the girls in their yukata and enjoying their time. Add a bit of fireworks to make it an even more memorable experience too. Cute stuff. I want to see Sophie wear yukata in more episodes! |

finally the fan service episode! Ellie's version of a beach get away was my favorite for a sec I actually thought she was outside until they should her swimming or rather relaxing in a pool of blood. I'm surprised that akari forgot that vampires can't handle sunlight seeing as how she always freaks out whenever sophie almost turns to ash. what I was expecting however was for akari to say something like "don't worry I put sunscreen lotion on you" or something to that affect only for sophie to reply with something like "sunscreen lotion?" or "that doesn't work on vampires". I hate how every fireworks festival episode in anime makes me hungry and how they keep showing all this delicious food as though they're mocking me. Still a little disappointed they didn't go to the beach at night but we did get to see sophie in a yukata and we even learned that vampires have a need to count. |

Vampires at the beach ? What a strange scenario. Sophie getting kidnapped in the suitcase was hilarious hahaha, but they should've done it like Elly did xD |

Sophie stuck on that sunshade at the beach was really cute and even more cuter when she got stuck on that tree shade. She really had to count those seeds, I guess that couldn't be helped since it's a vampire trait. But thank goodness for Akari's caring, otherwise she would've been stuck there alone. Good episode, |

It's a hard life being「Black Sabbath」(but fixed-size and slower) I did not know about the counting folklore. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire#Creating_vampires Other methods commonly practised in Europe included (...) placing poppy seeds, millet, or sand on the ground at the grave site of a presumed vampire; this was intended to keep the vampire occupied all night by counting the fallen grains, indicating an association of vampires with arithmomania. Similar Chinese narratives state that if a vampire-like being came across a sack of rice, it would have to count every grain; this is a theme encountered in myths from the Indian subcontinent, as well as in South American tales of witches and other sorts of evil or mischievous spirits or beings. |

So Akari managed to sneak in Sophie past the train security? I guess she passed her off as a realistic doll :D that bit at the end with Sophie counting the seeds! hahaha |

I certainly didn't expect a beach scene in this kind of show... which makes it hilariously absurd. Also a bit too relying on fanservice shots, so yeah, it had its drawbacks. Other than that I liked this episode quite a lot, pretty much as usual. The closing scene was the cutest thing ever and there was some really interesting character interaction in the fireworks sequence. Sophie being concerned and to a point bothered by the transience of things is something that makes a lot of sense to her own existence, and Akari reminding her that there's beauty in this transience was a pretty healing moment. |

Akari's good intentions were pretty terrifying, making Sophie go to the beach is definitely not a good idea xD The fireworks will be a beautiful memory to keep for them, I hope they can have those moments for many, many years. That final scene with Sophie wanting to stay with Akari there, aww. |

They got a bit real with the "I don't like flowers" thing, and then it got cute with the fireworks to turn it around a bit. |

On the other hand, yes, it bothers me that fanservice exists in this anime. Among other things because the framing and "camerawork" in this episode in particular are, at times, forced to include a sexualized perspective of the characters, so it's very noticeable when the shows aims for a scene to be considered fanservice and it creates a disconnect with the rest. Another issue is that the characters are particularly young-looking which makes things more tasteless from an own moral approach. And unlike other cases I could make (Harukana Receive, last season) these shots are particularly inappropriate to the tone of the show and what it has set so far. I would remove fanservice if it depended on me, take that for sure, because it's not an element I enjoy. But even in this basis there's stuff that bothers me more, less or perhaps not at all according to context and circumstances. This show is very mild, but not completely devoid of issues in that respect. To me anyway. |

I know it's a bit of a trope in this neck of the woods, but what about Akari made Hinata so worried about her getting a boyfriend? She's not exactly the straightest arrow in the quiver. Unless you're a bible waving Puritan who shudders at the mere thought of a woman showing her ankles, this episode was hardly even bordering Little Snow Fairy Sugar. As far as I can remember, at the most you saw girls wearing swimsuits playing in the water. It was about as pornographic as, well, going to the fucking beach. If this episode was passing the threshold of what's not gonna get you an STD through the screen, it's pretty much a wrap for almost any sport that gets aired on TV. |

God damn you two. Get your heads out of your asses and stop believing that complaining about fanservice = being a puritan. I wasn't born yesterday. I watch stuff with sexual content. And I know when a show is trying to ellicit an erotic reaction with its visual decisions. I don't like fanservice in this show. End of question here, if you like it, enjoy it. Is not only melodramatic, dumb and totally missing the point. It's also bullshit. And if you like fanservice you should readily identify how framing matters to make something gain an erotic appeal. How this is not about a pair of boobs or a butt on screen, but a pair of boobs or a butt on screen specifically framed to have a suggestive tone. But yeah, keep talking about how this is less fanservice than whatever totally tame show because you have no idea how to interpret visual language and can't see past the characters wearing swimsuits. And you can also point to where I say that this is a big issue, now that we are at it. Your intellectual dishonesty is offending me far more than the little fanservicey frames I just said that I don't like and then proceeded to praise the episode in the same post. |

Rest assured, I can do that and call you a pussy. You say all of this, but the problem is you don't seem to know when that is occurring and when it isn't, otherwise you wouldn't have even seen it fit to bring it up. Much less whine about how it's "a bit too relying on fanservice shots." There was hardly any elicitation here. Probably about 10 seconds worth in total. They were about as erotic as observing a Barbie doll as a preteen and just so happening to see she has panties underneath her dress. You saw girls in swimsuits and got hot and bothered. Congratulations, you've got the libido of a 14 year old. Did you watch with a mountain of birth control pills in hand or something? Flick your bean and move on. I went through the tedium of going back and rewatching it just to make sure. The most provocative thing in that scene was the two of them playing with a beach ball or something as it showed Hinata from the back. You must have popped off like a shaken soda bottle at that exact moment, because the rest of the episode was pretty much just regular shit. The rest of the scene was regular shit. This: Is not only melodramatic, dumb and totally missing the point. It's also bullshit. And if you like fanservice you should readily identify how framing matters to make something gain an erotic appeal. How this is not about a pair of boobs or a butt on screen, but a pair of boobs or a butt on screen specifically framed to have a suggestive tone. Yeah, moron, we know. You don't need a degree for that. The thing is, that's not what happened. They're at the beach for a good 3 minutes, if even that. Including a flashback. It stands to reason that they'd be showing skin and it also stands to reason that you'd see them from an angle that may get you going. You went as far as to say they relied on fanservice shots too much. In reality, with your standard, they'd have to actually work in reverse and go out of their way censor the frames you're referring to. Animator said: Wow, can you believe this girl's wearing something that reveals her armpits? I think there's some people who are into that, let's redraw it. You're going on about probably one or two frames out of what was pretty much normal. You're like one of those crackhead conspiracy nut types. At the very worst they showed Hinata poking out that sweet ass from the back and a frontal shot that, go figure, gave you a glimpse of Akari's tits. Boo hoo. You're too retarded to notice that your issue isn't with fanservice, it's pretty much with the beach. Swimsuits in particular. You might as well just say you don't like beach/pool episodes, but even amongst those it falls horribly short if the intent is to go out of its way to arouse the viewer. But yeah, keep talking about how this is less fanservice than whatever totally tame show because you have no idea how to interpret visual language and can't see past the characters wearing swimsuits. With this kind of deep read, you're a cringe comp anime reviewer in the making. Sorry to break it to you fortune cookie, but it's not that complex. The thing is, you don't need to see past the characters wearing swimsuits. That's all they're doing. Wearing swimsuits. And playing in the water for a good 10 seconds. Anything henceforth, for the most part, is probably some shit you'd see from someone wearing a swimsuit regardless of intent. And you can also point to where I say that this is a big issue, now that we are at it. Your intellectual dishonesty is offending me far more than the little fanservicey frames I just said that I don't like and then proceeded to praise the episode in the same post. The lack of self awareness here is staggering. How obtuse can you get? First of all, throwing this in after calling my post melodramatic is top shelf literature level irony. You might be typing in the wrong places. Imagine calling someone else intellectually dishonest while simultaneously playing the fool. Your post about how absurd a beach scene was and how it relied too much on fanservice shots is you complaining. Whether or not it's a "big issue" to you, whether or not you complained extensively, you were complaining. That alone made you look like, as far as I'm concerned, a puritan. If that got your panties in a bunch, it's likely a case of a hit dog hollering. |

SJ7izm said: Rest assured, I can do that and call you a pussy. And I can call you a fucking idiot who is desperate for my attention right from the beginning, but let's get on with the "arguments". SJ7izm said: You say all of this, but the problem is you don't seem to know when that is occurring and when it isn't, otherwise you wouldn't have even seen it fit to bring it up. Much less whine about how it's "a bit too relying on fanservice shots." There was hardly any elicitation here. Probably about 10 seconds worth in total. They were about as erotic as observing a Barbie doll as a preteen and just so happening to see she has panties underneath her dress. If you weren't so fucking dense with the posts other people write you would have noticed that I already framed my complaint as very minor, not even taking away an inch of my enjoyment for an episode I have liked at the very least as much as the rest. And that "as much" is a lot. If I say that I don't like a couple sequences, my complaint is about a couple sequences. Had you not been the illiterate jerk you are you could have noticed how I wrote my post and how nowhere it is suggested that I didn't like the overall tone or even that I thought it was relevant, compared to how I talk about a 20-second sequence in the second paragraph. But hey, I guess I can't expect honesty from a guy who decided to start his reply with "pussy". SJ7izm said: You saw girls in swimsuits and got hot and bothered. Congratulations, you've got the libido of a 14 year old. Did you watch with a mountain of birth control pills in hand or something? Flick your bean and move on. I don't know what to make of what I'm reading here. Do you really feel proud of writing this? Do you type, read the phrase, submit the post and feel like you are making a point? Because I don't know how it feels like having the libido of a 14-year-old, but you can probably tell if you have the brains of. SJ7izm said: I went through the tedium of going back and rewatching it just to make sure. The most provocative thing in that scene was the two of them playing with a beach ball or something as it showed Hinata from the back. You must have popped off like a shaken soda bottle at that exact moment, because the rest of the episode was pretty much just regular shit. The rest of the scene was regular shit. Yeah well, not every frame, and not even the majority of the frames are sexualized. Only your free interpretation of what I wrote made you believe I said that. There's not much I can add to the beach sequences besides that and the shot of Akari staring at Sophie, which is far better placed in narrative. Later on, you have the sequence of Akari undressing Hinata. Yeah, that's it. Did you know that I never said it was a general tone? But of course you did, you are not a retard who would make a fuss after misreading, being called out for misreading, and imagining that I jerk off just because I make personal appreciations on how I feel the intent of something is and state that I don't like this intent. By the way, the thing about Hinata's zoom out ass shot in the beach, which is the most blatant, is that this is not the first time the show has used this kind of framing. It bothered me the first time as well. As much as a 5-second panning shot can bother me. Which is very little. Thanks for the concern. I rated this episode 4/5 in the poll, which is pretty consistent with my overall thoughts on the series. SJ7izm said: Yeah, moron, we know. You don't need a degree for that. The thing is, that's not what happened. You didn't seem to know, seeing how your answer was "but hey people have swimsuits in the beach". Yeah cool tell me more about how you understood what I was saying. If you wanted to talk about framing, bring it from the beginning instead of your cheap ass excuse that girls wear swimsuits in the beach. SJ7izm said: They're at the beach for a good 3 minutes, if even that. Literally because to me in this show more than zero is too much. For reasons I also mentioned to EcchiGodMamsterP later. And next time I discuss something I'll remember using this "but you want to censor things!!" card. It may make me look like a complete idiot, but if I'm dumb enough I can fool myself into thinking I owned my rival. Tl;dr: I never advocated for censorship and I've been saying and repeating that if you enjoy fanservice in this or any other show, more power to you. What I said before, now that I see you getting ready to misinterpret and use in your favor, is that if I was in charge I wouldn't have any fanservice, neither mild nor heavy. I would also limit the screentime of robots in mecha shows to two minutes or less per episode. And if I wrote a spokon I would likely stray away from the more direct sport-related focus. It's called personal preference, you know. SJ7izm said: You're going on about probably one or two frames out of what was pretty much normal. You're like one of those crackhead conspiracy nut types. At the very worst they showed Hinata poking out that sweet ass from the back and a frontal shot that, go figure, gave you a glimpse of Akari's tits. Boo hoo. Oh, so you know what I meant. You were able to identify the shots I could frame as fanservicey without me telling you. And you have the nerve to tell me that I'm imagining things. It's interesting how you are not mentioning for instance, the sequences that introduce us to Akari and Hinata with a panning shot through her bodies. Cool, because I don't either. And you know why? Because I can differentiate which kinds of shots have suggestive intent and which ones don't. SJ7izm said: You're too retarded to notice that your issue isn't with fanservice, it's pretty much with the beach. Swimsuits in particular. You might as well just say you don't like beach/pool episodes, but even amongst those it falls horribly short if the intent is to go out of its way to arouse the viewer. Oh let's get with my ratings here and there: Harukana Receive ----> 9 And that show should also give you a hint that I'm not as rigidly against fanservice in every kind of anime. It's a case by case. I don't like it in Kyuuketsuki-san. I don't mind it in Harukana. Azumanga Daioh is my favorite show. It has three beach episodes. I love them a lot. There is a single sequence in them that appears sexualized. I neither like nor dislike it. Do you want more examples? The beach episode in Darling in the FranXX was oddly one of my favorites of that series. The beach OVA in Yuru Camp is a lot of fun. And of course a lot of other examples, more, less or not fanservicey at all depending on the show. Even then, your assumption that I don't enjoy beach episodes and scenes when I DID enjoy the beach scenes of this episode is surely wild. You know what is the problem? That you read people simply making a negative remark about something, and you treat it as a major complaint, completely misconstruing my post, my personality and my attitude towards this series in the process. That's being next level of defensive. It's paranoid. And you would have an excuse if my post even hinted at it, but no, I only said that the fanservice shots were a drawback. Whoa boy sure I went savage with this show, I totally deserve to be called out by some dumb fuck who can't differentiate nitpicks or very minor criticism. SJ7izm said: With this kind of deep read, you're a cringe comp anime reviewer in the making. Eh, do you know that visual language exists? You appear to know, since you yourself could pick specific frames and say: "this one is sexualized". Indeed, it's not complicated. SJ7izm said: Sorry to break it to you fortune cookie, but it's not that complex. The thing is, you don't need to see past the characters wearing swimsuits. That's all they're doing. Wearing swimsuits. And playing in the water for a good 10 seconds. I will repeat it just in case, even if I said it before, but it seems you need some extra help to grasp basic concepts. If you wanted to discuss from the beginning about something I already tackled before in the thread, by mentioning framing and "camerawork" in an earlier answer to EcchiGodMamsterP, you wouldn't bring this dishonest comparison where you somehow conclude that I have issues with this show just because they are in a beach and they wear swimsuits. You could have talked about the framing from the beginning, instead of quoting EcchiGodMamsterP by calling my point bullshit and then proceeding to misconstrue it to a level that anyone with more than a functioning brain cell could tell you was absolutely wrong and uncalled for. And perhaps being polite would help, but hey, that's a suggestion. SJ7izm said: Anything henceforth, for the most part, is probably some shit you'd see from someone wearing a swimsuit regardless of intent. Regardless of intent sounds like you are not taking intent into account. I'll let this slide since you've already proved smart enough to differentiate between sexualized and non-sexualized framing. You know what's funny about this? That I say that there's sexualized framing, you mention yourself sexualized framing, and I'm somehow exaggerating for saying that this exists. But please go on, I want to hear your next argument. SJ7izm said: The lack of self awareness here is staggering. How obtuse can you get? Does the Government pay you for writing insults or something? SJ7izm said: First of all, throwing this in after calling my post melodramatic is top shelf literature level irony. You might be typing in the wrong places. Well, you are the one making a fuss of something I didn't even intend to be a significant portion of my original post, and calling me a bible Puritan or whatever edgy shit about STD for a single phrase. Like, why are we even talking about this and not my comment on transience and Sophie that I focus on a lot more in that early post? I guess because EcchiGodMamsterP singled out a sole phrase from that post and went the whine whine whine complain complain complain route? SJ7izm said: Imagine calling someone else intellectually dishonest while simultaneously playing the fool. Your post about how absurd a beach scene was and how it relied too much on fanservice shots is you complaining. Jesus freaking Christ I didn't believe people would interpret "it's hilariously absurd" as a negative. Well that explains something. But no. This isn't a negative. This is me saying that it is an absurdity, and a very funny one: I can't think of a series where a beach episode would feel more out of place than one with a vampire MC. And this is part of this show's comedic style and charm. I like it. SJ7izm said: Whether or not it's a "big issue" to you, whether or not you complained extensively, you were complaining. That alone made you look like, as far as I'm concerned, a puritan. If that got your panties in a bunch, it's likely a case of a hit dog hollering. You don't know me. You literally built an entire persona out of a single phrase of me saying "I don't like this". Like, fuck you. |

Damn, dude. I started skimming, getting ready to fully read and deconstruct your arguments, then saw this and said "There's a beach OVA for Yuru Camp? Get out of town. I'ma watch that shit." So just to be a dick, I'm going to waste the time of your day you put into your rebuttal. Now, you're probably thinking, "Yeah, right, coward. you're just bitching out. You have no pride, no honor." In which case, you'd be absolutely right. When I compared spending a good 20 watching the Yuru Camp girls jump around in swimsuits to spending that time reiterating prior arguments, it didn't take me long to make my decision. |

Lol fair enough @SJ7izm. It is more of a survival camp thing though, but there's some swimsuit action out there. The 3rd OVA by the way. |

Uhmm hello?... Uhm, I think the confrontation is over now. The thread went back to normal. Relieved sigh* . . . Well, regarding the episode, I didn't know Sophie was afraid of water too... but what was Akari thinking in taking her to a beach? That surely must have been a nightmare for the poor Sophie-chan xD It was an ok episode although the matsuri part was my favorite. They all looked really cute in their yukatas. And the scene after the ED was kind of cute as well. P.S.: Damn, the fight in the posts above me was more interesting than the episode itself... |

SJ7izm said: I know it's a bit of a trope in this neck of the woods, but what about Akari made Hinata so worried about her getting a boyfriend? She's not exactly the straightest arrow in the quiver. I think it was simply worrying about the most realistic outcome* and panicking a bit about possibly losing the person she loves to someone else. Hinata's a bit like Sharo from Gochuumon, in that she seems to realize her love's doomed to remain one-sided, but she doesn't get quite as depressed about it as Sharo does. (Everyone can relate to that, we've all had an unrequited love at some point, even if it wasn't with someone of the same sex.) * The odds are Akari's not bisexual or a lesbian, and Hinata probably already realizes Akari isn't in love with her. Frankly, Akari would probably be doll-sexual, in that she only seem to show attraction to dolls and girls that look like dolls. That's actually a real thing, called agalmatophilia. Nemesis_Ranka said: So Akari managed to sneak in Sophie past the train security? I guess she passed her off as a realistic doll :D They probably took a local train to get to the beach. At least back when I went to Japan, there was no one checking luggage for the local trains at all. I don't remember anyone doing so for the shinkansen either, but I only took it from Tokyo to Osaka and back once. |

EcchiGodMamsterP said: every fucking time.. i swear oh no, theres boobs in a show full of attractive female characters.. oh the horror... how dare they... I usually like fan-service as long as it does not interfere with the personalities of the characters or story/general structure of the series. Unless it is an ecchi series you are watching which already are focused on the lewd aspect, they need to build up the mood or give a reason to show us that particular panty-shot or it will feel out of place. It is of course my personal preference, but just randomly throwing a butt-crack in frame is not the way to do it. There are many other ways to give us a view of her butt without bluntly throwing it in our faces saying "okay, here's your fan-service shot". The blood-sucking scenes with Elly are good. Showing the girls in bikinis? Sure, why not. Or maybe in other shows where they have scenes with big-boobed girls running into the water in slo-motion so we can have a good look? Sign me up! Now, correct me if I am wrong here ..But giving Akari bigger boobs for the sake of one scene? Not so much. It alters a character to please the audience. It shouldn't be there, period. EcchiGodMamsterP said: if you were a huge fan-service fan like me, you'd probably be just as annoyed at the NEVER ENDING complaining No, because if you were a bit more intelligent like me, you'd probably understand the reasons behind it. Everyone is not interested in fan-service and if they see something that does not contribute to the story and is clearly only there to please a certain group of people, of course they will be annoyed. Imagine if they threw in random Justin Bieber references in every other anime series. You bet your ass you would be annoyed after a while as well. Now, of course there are those who are just against sexual jokes and nudity. Screw em. But you got to understand that a lot of people only appreciate these sexual themes in scenarios where they can be appropriately used. A love story, a comedy for teenage boys or a hentai, for example. jal90 said: I certainly didn't expect a beach scene in this kind of show... which makes it hilariously absurd. While I did point out some things I did not like with the beach scene, I am by no means surprised that we got one (neither am I against it, I just think some of the service shots were poorly handled) and neither should you. This anime is listed as Shoujo Ai, one should expect there to be at least a slightly lewd scene or two. If you did not catch that there has been quite a lot of suggestive scenes already so I am not sure why you are so surprised. nDroae said: I did not know about the counting folklore https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AXPnH0C9UA --- Now!
