When Pedro sacrificed himself, my very first worry was that Brook would not have been conscious through the candy coating. The reasoning is simple, the brotherhood between Brook and Pedro was the relationship we saw built most, for instance, seeing a flashback with Carrot and Pedro is sad, sure, but Brook and Pedro’s relationship felt real because we saw it form and we saw them act on it. Specifically seeing Brook’s anger that Pedro would dare apologize for risking his life for their sake, he was utterly grateful for that boy. And secondly, hearing about someone's death feels real and fatalistic, there is no spectacular beauty in learning that your friend passed away out of your sight. In real life, most people don't go down in a blaze of glory, but being able to see Pedro’s fight doesn't hit nearly as hard as learning that he has fallen after the fact for me, perhaps it is due to the realism, the relatability of that method.
Despite dreading this moment, I had put it out of my mind for the moment. Brook suggesting that they should have faith in their captain put a smile on my face as I appreciated how much joy his character brings me, and then he asked about the other missing comrade, Pedro. The realization that the time has come for the inevitable and tragic conversation struck. And it was no disappointment. With the rain and the sad music starting, the tone was set and Nami began recounting the events that they missed after being turned into candy statues. It’s no surprise Brook fell to his knees with overwhelming feelings of shame and sadness: this skeleton is one of the characters who suffered most due to the loss of his friends and isolation, now, one could argue his role in life is not much more than appreciating and fighting for those he has around him, and here, he lost a friend due to his failure. Reenacting Luffy after he lost his friends one by one, Brook broke down and blamed himself.
Not only was the relationship between them which we saw form the crux of this emotional scene, but also the background of Brook, this has been in the making the entirety of Whole Cake. We introduce Pedro as a man who is on a time limit, a sacrificial character of sorts, and we team him up with Brook, eventually making Brook fight a futile battle forcing Pedro’s hand and freezing Brook so that he would learn of this event in the most dramatic way possible. He has already played a huge role in this arc, but I would have described it up until now as a major acting role. He made friendships, he played a huge role in fighting against Mom and succeeding in his mission, he shattered the portrait, but while his determination was meaningful, there lacked an emotional centerpiece. One of pushing Brook’s emotions to the max, showing a new side to him, or developing what we already know. With this having been in the making all this time, this sorrowful scene, and of course, momentum moving forward with Peros trailing behind them, he has it all. He has everything he needs to be a truly meaningful part of Whole Cake, but maybe I’m just saying that because he made me cry. Sanji and Brook are our heroes!!
However, that is not all to mention because this scene was crucial for Jimbei as well! Something I have loved about him since Impel Down was his ability to accept the fact that they cannot survive in this world unscathed. He is compassionate, but knows that there are times where sacrifices must be made. Loss and death is inevitable. A very similar scene to this one played out with Bon Clay in the past, where it was only later that Luffy and co found out that Bon Clay had stayed behind, and Jimbei was a part of this. Making sure that he had last words with Luffy. In this moment, Jimbei made sure that everybody knew what we saw was Pedro’s victory! He made sure they knew to hold back their tears, stay concentrated and continue forward for Pedro’s sake because that is what he died for! Jimbei showed himself as Boss Jimbei to the group, taking over as the captain when they needed someone to do so and steering them on the right track. Even Brook who was angry at Jimbei’s callous appearance apologized for being out of line in one of most powerful moments of the scene for me. He realized that it wasn't a cold approach taken by Jimbei, rather the most respectful and compassionate way to carry on Pedro’s wishes! I had honestly wished this was a lesson Luffy would learn after his trauma during pre time skip. And, heck, even the Sunny was crying similar to the Merry back when Luffy and Usopp fought!
I almost don't want to touch on the other aspects of this episode as they are far less important in my opinion, some light setup whereas Brook and Jimbei’s response was the main course, but it is worth noting that Pudding has always denied taking over Lola’s position thus continuing to show her conflicted personality and respect for her older sister. |
